rectitude, courage, benevolence
Aburame Shino was born and raised by the bushido. As the son of a bushi and a strict samurai wife, he entered adulthood at a young age, and never experienced the joy and ease of childhood. When not being drilled in the basics of literature, poetry, and mathematics, he was trained in the art of war and the instruments that fueled it. In between those times, if the land was at peace, he mediated in the surrounding forests of the Aburame estate, enjoying the hum and general company of the insects. When the land was threatened, he fought against bandits along side his father, Shibi, or even his mother, if his father was already occupied at war. Life was hard, but he regarded it with pride. It was stable, constant. It had meaning. At the age of thirteen, as tradition goes, Shino underwent the ceremony Genbuku, where he received his first real swords, amour, and the official title of ‘samurai’. The very next day, he was called into battle. Again, bandits raped and pillaged the lord’s land, terrorized villagers and spread chaos and madness. They had brought more weapons and men than any previous ventures, but were quickly cut down by the organized, skilled ranks of samurai and their subordinates. Shino, despite his novelty, fought beautifully alongside the veterans; he was naturally skilled, a genius. There, his blade had its first taste of human blood, and there, Shino christened it the Kekkai Konchuu, the destruction bug. A name that suited the both of them. Not long after observing Shino’s quiet loyal efficiency a couple more times, the lord used him to his advantage. For five years, Shino served in a constant barrage against a neighboring territory, a fight for power and land. These men were different, much stronger than the bandits and thieves from before. Rest was rare, and the deaths of his comrades were never-ending. But his lord wanted the land, so Shino, as a servant, would give it to him. To die in that struggle would mean honor. One day, however, when his men were busy on the battlefield, an assassin slipped inside the damiyo’s headquarters and shot him in the head, point blank. With the damiyo's death, years of death, violence and turmoil finally came to its end. And just like that, Shino lost the war and his title as samurai. How could he be, when he had none to serve?
honor, glory, loyalty
The neighboring damiyo quickly took over the masterless region, and with it, the Aburame lands. Filled with hidden despair, father and son found each other on the ruined battle field and ran to recover the woman they had left behind. They discovered her body in the master bedroom, sprawled out on the floor next to a broken opium pipe. His mother had overdosed, dead for days apparently Shibi and Shino had no idea onto who gave her the drug or how she got addicted; they hadn’t been home in years. Sepekku was the only way Shino could rid of all the shame, all the disgrace. It was the bushido way. Shibi, however, refused to assist his son in the sacred suicide ritual. “I am not a samurai anymore,” replied Shibi when Shino asked why, “but a father who just lost his wife and a war. A selfish father, that’s all I am.” Not knowing what else to do, Shino quietly left his battered home and wandered off into the capital city, leaving everything behind but the Keikkai Konchuu. He became a ronin, a drifting man at the age of eighteen. Eventually, a merchant caught sight of the seemingly poor boy, and out of pity, took him out to sea as hired help on his merchant ship. The sea was where he and his blade started to live again. The deep blue was dangerous, crawling with pirates and danger; everyone needed an escort, and Shino had the right amount of fighting and political experience to be of aid. Shino traveled from the Philippines, to China, and then to India, where he met his longest and current client, a captain of an EITC owned ship. He is British man, who pays well in return for Shino’s protection and occasional wisdom. While he loyal to the man he serves, Shino’s true purpose on the ocean is to find the men who sold his mother opium Until then, he can not pass on from this world in peace.
respect, and honesty
Quiet, creepy, and mysterious. Always donning heavily shaded glasses, only a few have seen his face on the seas. He does not usually speak unless spoken to, and when he does speak, he’s blunt and brutally honest. Every task and every obstacle is important and demands his full attention and skill, no matter how small or apparently miniscule. Shino’s mind is always one step ahead of his actions, and keeps emotion separate from his judgment. His personality is cold and odd, and he knows it. Shino strictly follows his own set of moral codes and rules, which closely resembles that of the bushido. He only kills when necessary, and never lets a man kill a bug in his presence (unless it’s a mosquito. There isn’t much he could to do to prevent malaria.). Some say he’s more affectionate towards insects than to fellow humans; some say he isn’t human at all. However, Shino genuinely cares for the men and women around him. He is a reliable leader and a trustworthy follower. Shino just has a peculiar way of showing it.
