Going to Atlanta this weekend with a couple of friends. It's going to be great if what I look forward to happens. Until then, I can only hope.

Mood Recs! [

Hey everyone!

I've been playing with emotion and mood in a couple of stories, which has led me to thinking about how writers establish tone and how much tone can drive the plot of a fic. Which has led me to looking back at a couple of stories that I remember primarily because of their tone. Normally, I'm drawn to stories that are driven either by characters or by a politically-charged plotline. But these two stories stand out as being among those that can get me another way. The first is a long and juicy Harry Potter fic with a brilliant satiric edge, and the second is a very short and very simple tale from the M*A*S*H fandom that glides over some profound emotional depths. Enjoy!

Title: Mordant
Author: After the Rain
Fandom: Harry Potter
Summary: Linus Berowne is the cartoonist behind "Martin Miggs, the Mad Muggle." His satiric wit has been annoying the Ministry of Magic for twenty-five years. But things turn sinister one full-moon night at the height of Dolores Umbridge's power, when Linus meets a werewolf...
Keys To Understanding: This story is based on the very brief conversation that Remus Lupin had with Arthur Weasley’s werewolf roommate at St. Mungo’s, so if you haven’t read up through OotP, you might be a little lost.
Recommendation Reasons: The title pretty much gives away the overall tone of this story, but this is not just sarcasm. This is sarcasm coupled with amazing story-telling and some superb characterization. The balance of the story is carried by an OC who is a fully realized character, complete with strengths, weaknesses, and an absolutely brilliant sense of humor that is quickly put to the test when he becomes a werewolf. The story weaves itself through and around canon, giving some of the canon characters roles in a strong supporting cast and seamlessly integrating the story’s own plot with the plot unfolding at Hogwarts. One of my favorite stories from one of the fandom’s best authors.
Text Excerpt:

“Question Thirty-Seven. Do you advocate the overthrow of the Ministry by force or violence?”

“Well, I used to prefer force,” said Linus, “but I think after today I’ll have to go with violence.”

The counselor took off his glasses and peered at him over the parchment. “That wasn’t meant to be an either-or question,” he said seriously.

Title: Tainted
Author: Neoinean
Fandom: M*A*S*H
Summary: Yet another innocent thing becomes tainted by the war.
Keys To Understanding: Be familiar with the characters of B.J., Hawkeye, and Radar.
Recommendation Reasons: I’m always amazed at just how much punch a very small story can pack. This is one such example. The concept is simple, the narrative is quick, and the story is soon over. But at the end, the impact is profound. Something has been lost by a few of the story’s key characters, and the way in which this loss is revealed really drives the message home. The key to this kind of writing is to make the impact clear without overplaying it, and that is exactly what this story does. Subtlety written, well-timed, and haunting in its effects.
Text Excerpt:

“We need your opinion on something very important, Radar,” Hawkeye said seriously.

Radar fidgeted nervously.

Hawkeye pointed skyward over the corporal’s head. “What does that cloud look like to you?”

New story up! [

For those of you interested, I've posted a new story. I considered previewing it, but it didn't seem very practical. For one thing, the story's extremely short. For another, it's extremely inane. :)

Anyway, the story is called "Maggoty Bread," and it's a movie verse tale that explains why the Uruk-hai took maggoty bread with them when they raced after the Fellowship. It's dedicated to Nightwing, and both Nightwing and Docmon participated in the beta process. The inanity is all my fault, though, not theirs, so please blame me. If the summary hasn't scared you off and you're interested in reading, you can find the story at FF.net, SoA, HASA, and LotRFanfiction. And if all goes as planned, there might be a couple of other short stories going up in the near future. We'll see what happens. The school year has started once again, and I'm already feeling swamped. (This might change when the Olympics stop giving me an excuse to procrastinate everything...)
