I like to talk about alternative realities where words can be exchanged underwater and people leave their fingerprints on each others' bones. Maybe there's a universe where a caterpillar can fall in love with a leaf and be loved back. Or a universe where a caterpillar stays a caterpillar forever--forgetting the long winter inside the cocoon, forgetting the butterfly!

I believe in soul power. I believe soul power is contagious. But I also believe that soul power is painfully rare. I want the earth to prove to me that it's not a cold, dead place. (That Explosions in the Sky album tells me, but I want real proof!!)

I also think that the battery of my soul can be charged by music. Music is the main power source! A beautiful song is so vital.

Onto other things, I am obsessed with Death Note. *Is an L fangirl* I'll be spitting out fanart for that pretty soon on devART. I wish I knew how to CG, seriously. It would make my Ruroken fanart so much prettier. I envy people who are really good CG-ers, especially the hosts of all the Japanese Kenshin art websites I visit - they are so amazing. Gosh darn it, wish I could communicate with them or learn Japanese or something.

Back...and feeling a little disheartened

...Disheartened not from visiting the campus of Carnegie.

Disheartened from the 10-minute chat my parents had with me at the VERY LAST MINUTE possible, 5 days before I'm supposed to turn in my college decisions (which I've still not done yet.)

They said they can't pay for it.

They said they can't pay and I will have to go to Davis because a) it's closer to them and b) it's cheaper. Not that I have anything against Davis. They said this even after I won a $10,000 writing scholarship I worked my ass off for.

But the whole time my dad kept criticizing the Carnegie campus even though it was absolutely gorgeous (by gorgeous I mean splendid...especially the Fine Arts school, that place had these long columns and statues and a marble floor and there was this dome with an entire Michelangeo-esque mural on the ceiling. It was stunning. My dad kept complaining about the weather too even though both he and I know that weather isn't even really much of an issue.

Well, I'm not supposed to be selfish, am I not? I'm supposed to be an understanding daughter. I can't expect them to pay for anything, can I?

But the truth is, I feel CHEATED. Why? Because all this time I was led into believing I had OPTIONS, that I could go to a school I wanted to go to, and Asian parents didn't care whether a school is close by. Because all this time the only thing I got from them were IMPLICATIONS, INTIMATIONS that they preferred one of my schools over the other...nothing direct at all. I suspected they wanted me to go to Carnegie because it was the best school out of the ones I got into. Why do I feel cheated? Because now suddenly it seems that all this -- high school, all that late-night studying, all that hard work, all the grades, all the tests I took, all of that -- for nothing! Even my writing scholarship...nothing! I did that writing scholarship for the sole purpose of thinking maybe it would be easier to go to a private school with it.

When I went to Carnegie, the financial aid people said that if you receive any outside scholarships over $6000, they will DECREASE your financial aid package REGARDLESS of how much unmet need they left out. I feel CHEATED. The package Carnegie gave me was $5000+ short of what they said our need was, and yet they're going to cut off $2000 of my financial aid JUST BECAUSE I'M GETTING AN OUTSIDE SCHOLARSHIP. I'm led to think - isn't getting a scholarship supposed to be a GAIN, not a loss? So now it means that even if I win more scholarships, it'll pay off by just making me lose more financial aid. This just all gives me a big freaking HEADACHE because god, my parents already said they can't pay, and now the college wants to cut my finaid off too...

Great. I bet my parents wished I was the typical Asian child who will be obedient and go to UCLA or UC Berkeley like a good little Asian and study business or engineering or science or medicine but in truth I'M NOT. I'm an Asian-American who is going to major in creative writing/English and minor in Visual arts or studio arts. And I think I'm the only Asian-American I know who's going to do that. The irony of it all...On top of it my mother doesn't think I'd be able to pay off college loans just because of my majors.

I'm sorry, I know Patty's going to Davis - I think Davis IS a great school, but I was just so not expecting that they would throw this on me. My parents want me to go to Davis because it'll be a convenience for _them_ (it's close by them and cheap) and based on those advantages or conveniences that's where I'm going, regardless of what I think or how it suits me. So in the end, even when I have won my writing scholarship, that was all just misleading. In the end, I just can't afford much of anything.

God, I feel so cheated....

1. Rurouni Kenshin - (3) charas ellyberry got Kenshin and Kaoru.

Kenshin: Yes! The ideal character...He's conflicted, he has multiple personalities, he has such innocence when he's a rurouni and such ferocity when he's pissed. The facets of this character will fascinate me to no end.

Kaoru: A lot of people hate her, but I can't see any reason to hate her. She's pretty, generous, kind, philanthropic, not to mention she IS a strong female character no matter what people say about her being kidnapped - Watsuki said it himself that she IS strong. I mean, I sure as hell can't run a dojo school while providing for 3 male bums by myself at the age of 17. And for those who say she's immature, she isn't exactly an adult...She's still a teenager. Bleh.

2. Fushigi Yuugi - (3) charas ellyberry got Tasuki, Nuriko, and Tamahome
Tasuki: I love Tasuki because he's so insanely awesome.
Nuriko: My all-time favorite anime character besides Kenshin. Seriously, Nuriko's story may have been a little tragic, but god, he lived life to the fullest, he was just awesome. I have a bottomless pit of love for this character.

3. X/1999 ellyberry got Arashi. Well, my journal's named after her. She is a kickass anime girl (notice a pattern of what anime chicks I like...lol). She's mysterious...She can wield a SWORD (drool swords) with fluid grace, and she will go to no end for those she loves.

4. Mars ellyberry and _fragilebeauty got Rei. What can I say about Rei. That personality. That Ducati. That patience. Rawr.

5. Ranma 1/2 ellyberry and _fragilebeauty got Ryoga. No other Ranma character entertains me so. P-chan...the lost sense of direction, everything.

6. Ayashi no Ceres - _fragilebeauty got Yuuhi. I love Yuuhi because he's incredibly self-sacrificial, sweet, loyal, and ass-kicking. I mean, he can COOK. How frickin awesome. And his weapon is CHOPSTICKS. AHHHH. Yuuhi is my ideal guy. >.<

7. Cowboy Bebop - daft_dreamer got Faye Valentine. It's something about the ass-kicking girls. I love her, she's so funny and awesome at the same time, and she's not bogged down on how to get a MAN...she's bogged down on how to get by.

I got into NYU!!!!!!!!

So now it's between Carnegie, NYU, and UC Davis.

Carnegie-Mellon = best school, in Pittsburg, good art school, good English program, but too many techies and engineers and boys, might feel out of place, I'm an idiot when it comes to math
New York University = great exciting area, there is culture, lots of opportunities, not a bad school, but heinous weather and hoboes (according to my mother).
UC Davis = Near parents, great California weather, decent school but not nearly as good as the above schools, MUCH MUCH cheaper.
UC Irvine = same as Davis but near LA.
Otis College of Art and Design = Great art school with a kickass fashion program. Problems? Fin aid and lack of liberal arts education, no creative writing or poetry, but lots of art (duh).

And yup, for the weekend I was at Kendall's. We got in her applications at the last minute, literally. We went out at like 1 am to buy eggs and dance in the middle of a Palo Alto intersection to imaginary Missy Elliot music. Yeah, we are that lame. But lameness, you losers, IS FUN. LAMENESS ROCKS. Yup yup, and to add to that, she taught me how to photograph myself, lol.

P.S. I had shopper's block when I went shopping. Writer's block I completely understand. Artist's block I suffer from also. But shopper's block? It seems my talents are all wearing thin. >.< Must be the fried brain.

I got into UC Davis and UC Irvine so far.

UCLA rejected me. Yeah baby! *dances around with fellow rejectees*

Not like I wanted to go there anyway. It was my parents who peer-pressured me into applying. Not that if I had it my way, I would even apply to any UCs. So huge. So anonymous. So...California. I cannot wait until I receive notice from my private schools. Anything is better than the fiercely competitive Asian environment where education means nothing except mechanics. Seriously, I wonder if those "omg I got a 99.877777777777% and he got a 107.64334434% on that test i'm gonna diiiiiie" people ever figure out that there is life after college. Getting into whatever college isn't really going to end all the suffering in life - I wonder if they realize that? And then by the time they'll realize it, they'll be old and grow nostalgic for their days of youth. Sigh. How sad! I know that in college, if anything, I want an environment as far away from high school life as possible.

Oh yeah...and I turned 18 over last weekend. 18....18....so technically I'm a "legal adult"? Do I feel it? No... So I guess that makes me an "illegal teenager"... haha remember that Kendall?

Today I gave Valia some poetry for her assignment...we sat on the street curb for awhile while passing drivers stared at us...I walked home while it was getting dark, stopped by Quickly Tea. The guy at the counter was really nice and gave me the pearls for free(haha, that's how poor I am). I ran around barefoot on the grass under the stars. And then went on the swings for about an hour, ignoring my Econ AP homework and my math homework. Which brings me to now, procrastinating insanely as usual.

Death is something that I've dissected quite often in my life, though I've never actually tasted it. From this, I guess there are certain people who have a wider sense of vision than I do; there are people who have actually tasted it, there are people who walk around their whole lives with the aftertaste of someone's death in their mouths. There are people who take spoonfuls of it that were never caustic enough to burn a hole through their tongues.
Even with the wars, the tragedies, the Asian earthquakes, the agonies of death that have already embedded themselves on the psychologies of man, death is never anything I have truly witnessed. It is never something that has impacted me directly. And yet, today was the first time I smelled its breath, directly, not even through the most abstract spiritual connection I have with, say, a character in a movie, or a victim of a crime. This is to say, I have -never- known anyone who really died. Maybe this gives me a step behind others, but when it first happens I wouldn't have expected it to come out like this. Me and death still have a very abstract, imaginary connection.
But then the other day, it happened to this girl I know. I do not know her very well, I talked to her only sparingly, sometimes in ROP class, but I liked her artwork, she liked mine. And then I realized, I saw her in the last few hours of her life. It was Portfolio Day in San Francisco, where all the wannabe artists come get reviews on their portfolios. I remember my last conversation with her, that went something like:
"Which art schools reviewed you?"
"Oh, RISD, Otis, Laguna..."
"They say I need more observation pieces."
"Yes, it's always the observation pieces!"
"The reviews were not that great."
"No, it wasn't. Mediocre, to say the least."
"Well, we need to get more of that done now."
...trailing off.
Tammy got in a car crash on the way back, from San Francisco. My other classmate Sherry was with her, and now Sherry is in critical condition. This was the first time that someone I know has died. I don't know, but something about it just doesn't feel right. If anything, I would never have imagined it to be Tammy. I would have imagined us both slacking off on our "observational pieces" until the very last day to submit our art school applications. I never knew it could come to be like this. She really is the LEAST person I would expect to die.
I can still see her face. She was wearing a khaki jacket. Her hair, in a ponytail. Her face, kind, unblemished, tired. I can see Sherry's face. She had black eyeliner on, her black hair curled, her cheeks sprinkled with freckles.
What can I make of this?

I have been in shock for the past few days.

On Wednesday, it hailed (first time in 5 years), and there was a thunderstorm and a lightening storm.
Just the day before, Tuesday, had been sunny and clear and bright.

I think the weather is telling us something. There had been hope. There was hope. Now the hope has been crushed, mutilated, dissected, destroyed.

God is also telling us something through the hail. God's telling us that he's mourning with us. If I were God, and I were used to justify the hundreds of thousands of civilians and soldiers murdered, the countless number of heinous acts, the butchering of an economy one man has committed to slowly destroy a nation, I would mourn too. I would send hurricanes through Florida too. I would send the first hail in year too. I would thunder too. I would cast lightening too.

Justice, democracy, again denied in America. I am ashamed of my country. Ours is not a democracy anymore. It's a theocracy, an oligarchy, a plutocracy.

Woot. I truly been missing out on all the opportunities for classes and workshops.

I really like my ROP arts class so far. It's seriously the time of day I look forward to. The other classes, blah. I don't like my math class very much, but that's rather typical, no?

Humanities is pretty cool so far, but alot of people hate it. I feel like I need a real lit class though, so I'm probably going to take Myth/Folklore. Oh well. Hmm.

Movie - Mellennium Actress by the makers of Perfect Blue- it was really interesting, the way they set it up, about a famous actress gone into oblivion and chasing a shadow through her lifetime that spans over a chronicle. I liked it rather, lots of images, good quality animation.

Book - The Heart is a Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers - it kinda started slowly, depending on the character that the chapter is based on. It was serene, sometimes surprising, good book overall, I especially liked the depiction of Mick, the main girl character.

Artist - Vladimir Kush - surreal artist, some great contemporary art, his work is very much like Salvador Dali, metaphorical and fanciful sometimes. The work is very interesting to look at, he paints like a writer uses beautiful imagery.

Okay, well, I've been home for a few days. CSSSA is over, and there are certain points of it I want to make note

1) the teachers were amazing. although I didn't get the focus class I signed up for, Julia was quite memorable as a teacher. of course, all I did was write poetry, so much poetry, god more and more poetry when I really wanted to hone my prose/novel writing skills. at least it gave me incentive to start a chapbook. Mixpe was my core teacher, she was awesome too.

2) the food was just chicken, chicken, chicken. ironically on the way down when i was in central california i saw a sign that said something about a weird chicken disease spreading around and how it was affecting local chickens. Hopefully it stayed local.

3) the social life, ehhh. did i really spend my days at Emo Hill where all the writers formed orgies and smoked? ok, maybe sometimes I did, but it didn't become a sacred spot for me like it was for others. the songs they sang were great, but i wasn't part of that whole thing. frankly i didn't have the time of my life, this part of it fell way short of my expectations. there are some people that i will keep in touch with for a long time and i did make friends, but somehow i felt a bit disjointed, disconnected. one thing i loved though was the first few open mikes in the sublevel with the sea of graffiti. and the field trip to the getty.

but then again i'm really not the type of person who would make best friends lifelong buddies especially in one month. what can i say. to the csssa friends i did make, hugs to you all for those four weeks.

More about calarts--

So, Tim Burton's room was 330 on the third (green) floor with a carved door that has sort of a lopsided cross, and there is a mural he painted that resembled some version of Nightmare before christmas.

Tim Burton is my God!!!!!

The lower level is covered in graffiti, when I find a sharpie I'm gonna make my mark, haha, some weird grotesque symbol~ we had open mikes there where all the people came up to perform their poems, songs, works, monologues, etc. and now I have class so I gotta go!!

holy shit i spilled my coffee on my shirt so i had to hand-wash it in my dorm, and then i skipped lunch, i feel emaciated, now i have homework woo hoo, arts and culture seminars suck, i thought i would enjoy them but frankly they are monotonous. i wish i had a three-hole puncher!!!!!
