BSG - Sine Qua Non

O.M.G.

Best Episode this Season.

Why?
1) Romo Lampkin Returns
2) Tom Zarek Almost Becomes President (I only wish it stuck)
3) Serious Bill/Saul OTPness

I was so stoked to see Romo return. And he totally rocked this episode. Especially since we didn't just get a rehash of his former appearance. Last season Romo wasn't a human - he was this cryptic foil to Lee who nevertheless said some of the most awesome shit ever written for television. Tonight he was a person with his own inner demons and character arc, but still with the epically cool dialogue and razor-sharp-wit, like when he called Roslin out on having "repressed ambition" - that was so spot on.

I especially liked his scene with Papadama: it really pulled the whole episode together. Actually, it really pulled a lot of the themes in the show together. "Sine qua non" "Without which not" - every character has their struggle to hold onto their sanity admist the horror of the Cylon Holocaust and the General Crazy that is their lives. Everyone has to find something to cherish, to support, to believe in, or it all just isn't worth it.

Zarek! I love me my Zarek. I wish he got to be President. Why the Hell is Roslin (40-odd-something in line) = ok to be President, and Zarek (first in line) = the devil? Zarek is Awesomesauce. I would want him for President. I think he'll never live down his criminal past - and he knows it - it's so tragic. When they find Earth he and Lee just need to go off together and found some sort of beachfront commune and spend the rest of their lives serving Pina Coladas and writing Political Science Theory. And THANK YOU, TOM for noting that Roslin has never been elected - that has driven me nuts since she resumed the Presidency.

Moving on to Bill/Saul. I've always had an affectionate spot for their deep manly heterosexual love, but also for any slashy subtext (because let's face it: BSG is so much more fun Brokeback style). The fight in Adama's quarters? Dripping with subtext. Ooozing. When Bill tells Saul that he could at least understand torturing Six but not fraking her - the emotion in his voice! - it's not anger, it's betrayal. Same for Saul calling Bill out for his behavior "Over a woman!" Memo to Adama and Tigh: You aren't fooling anyone.

For all of the above, I'm willing to overlook the Romance Novel proportions of the A/R ship which I have never liked (It's like watching your parents having sex, and has turned Bill into a useless moron). I guess we're supposed to think that Papadama is Devoted and Brave for sitting in a Raptor waiting for Roslin to show up, but it comes off more as Sad and Pathetic. I like to think that his real motivation for this Monumentally Stupid Plan is just that he needs to get Tigh off his mind for a couple days, so the two can return to their routine of repressing their love in the form of gruff commands.

As you may have noticed, I'm really not liking Roslin these days....

Questions:

Did someone murder Romo's cat in retaliation for the trial? Or was it natural causes and was just a little loopy? Because that would be pretty horrible if someone did that to the cat - that was his only lifeline.

How could Tigh impregnate Six? Isn't that...like...not possible for two cylons? I call shenanigans! Someone else is the dad.
