May. 10th, 2009 @ 10:21 pm Ah, Jamie Oliver
Of course Jamie Oliver is brilliant and fabulous and wonderful- but even more so in my opinion as I've just bought the flavour shaker. Clever and convenient.

I got my basil and cilantro and sage planted this weekend! Summer is here!!

Today is beautiful because the grass has become a brilliant green and glittered in the morning light, millions of remaining raindrop prisms making ordinary lawns a sight to behold.

Jan. 20th, 2009 @ 09:57 pm Powerful, perfect words...
Praise Song for the Day

Each day
we go about our business,
walking past each other,
catching each other's eyes,
or not.
About to speak, or speaking.
All about us is noise.
All about us is noise and bramble,
thorn and din, each one of our ancestors
on our tongues.

Someone is stitching up a hem,
darning a hole in a uniform.
patching a tire.
Repairing the things in need of repair.
Someone is trying to make music somewhere
with a pair of wooden spoons on an oil drum,
with cello, boom-box, harmonica, voice.
A woman and her son wait for the bus.
A farmer considers the changing sky.
A teacher says, "Take out your pencils.
Begin."

We encounter each other in words,
words spiny or smooth, whispered or declaimed.
Words to consider, reconsider.
We cross dirt roads and highways
that mark the will of someone
and then others who said,
"I need to see what's on the other side.
I know there's something better down the road.
We need to find a place where we are safe."
We walk into that which we cannot yet see.

Say it plain: That many have died for this day.
Sing the names of the dead who brought us here,
who laid the train tracks,
raised the bridges,
picked the cotton and the lettuce,
built, brick by brick, the glittering edifices
they would then keep clean and work inside of.
Praise song for struggle.
Praise song for the day.
Praise song for every hand-lettered sign,
the figuring it out at kitchen tables.

Some live by "Love thy neighbor as thyself."
Others by "First, do no harm,"
or "Take no more than you need."
What if the mightiest word
is love?
Love beyond marital, filial, national.
Love that casts a widening pool of light.
Love with no need to preempt grievance.

In today's sharp sparkle, this
winter air, any thing can be made,
any sentence begun.
On the brink,
on the brim,
on the cusp,
praise song for walking forward in that light.

Dec. 22nd, 2008 @ 11:48 pm Figs. Dark Chocolate. Brandy. Oh, my!
I've been EXTREMELY spoiled this Christmas. I received a box of Rabitos Royale Fig BonBons. Though after actually eating one (because just seeing the box made me excited), I called my friend to rescind my thanks- because these aren't just an incredibly indulgent, amazingly decadent treat, they are more addictive than heroin. Seriously. She laughed, because she knew exactly how I felt, as it was her reaction when she first came across them as well.

I also received a jar of fig preserves, which I'm tempted to open and eat with a spoon, just to keep from consuming the entire box of Rabitos. MMMMMMMMM! Figs!!

Dec. 14th, 2008 @ 12:56 am Pear Butter
OMG. Just got done with the Pear Butter... it is SOOOOOOO delicious, I can't even tell you. I had several recipes, and had attempted one recipe first, which didn't work out well for me, and I didn't even bother canning it.

But this time I used this one:
Epicurious/Bon Appétit Spiced Pear Butter

Cut for full recipe, I never want to lose this! )

I think part of the amazing flavor was the incredible orange I happened to grab. And I finally figured out how to use my food mill properly. Reading and following directions can make such a difference, who knew?

Amazing, really, I highly, highly recommend this recipe. I don't even want to give this stuff away, holidays or not ;)

I hope I never, ever hear the name Palin again.

It's a new era, as utterly relieved as I am, as finally hopeful I am, I know it's not a magic wand that will automatically fix all the things I believe are wrong- but it's a very, very important first step, and he has a HELL of a job ahead to try to dig us out of this quagmire.

Now, I'm off to frost a 15" diameter cookie with the Obama symbol/logo for T., upon his specific request, for him to take to school.

Can you name these lyrics?

I saw a newspaper picture from the political campaign
A woman was kissing a child, who was obviously in pain
She spills with compassion, as that young child's
face in her hands she grips
Can you imagine all that greed and avarice
coming down on that child's lips

I've been wanting to listen to the album that these lyrics come from for awhile (not specifically this song though), and now that it's on iTunes, it's on repeat all day. I love it, and the nostalgia was initially pretty overwhelming (it's from my youth), but I had forgotten just how very dark each of the songs were. Whoa. Catchy tunes, but not exactly uplifting for singing along.

Hmmm. If I've logged everything on my GoodReads account, I've only read 25 books so far this year, which, however, is more than I thought I had read anyway, a far cry from meeting the typical 50 book challenge though. Better yet, only 5 books are re-reads. This was my goal this year, as last year I felt like that was all I did, re-read old favorites.

All in all I've had a great book discovery year. In the Woods and The Likeness definitely jumped to my all-time favorites list, and Garden Spells will be re-read in the future when I want a light, happy, refreshing read. I've fallen even more in love with Neil Gaiman with reading Neverwhere, a book who's plot I could care less about, but love it fiercely as just a vehicle for the things he says and how he says them. There is something incredibly familiar and comfortable, I feel like he articulates things I've intuitively thought and felt without ever consciously tried to put in words. I like how my mind feels as I'm reading his books, it's better than any drug, it contents my brain, engaging, entertaining, and makes me think. /fangirl gushing

Anyway. I really do like GoodReads in keeping this account, as well as a list that I can't lose of books I'm interested in picking up later.

Inexplicably, I have a Weezer song stuck in my head. I haven't heard it lately, nor do I have them on iTunes since my last computer transfer. With it stuck in my head, I then decided what I'm really in the mood for is Elvis Costello.

I know I'm late to the party when it comes to the Pandora Radio project, but T. introduced me to it last week. So, I typed in Elvis Costello and now I will have my fill of him, as well as similarly veined music, which, if it is working right, should also include Weezer... unless I'm the only one in the world to think that Weezer is reminiscent of Costello.

Mar. 26th, 2008 @ 07:45 pm Vintage Button Pendants
So, here's what I've been working on since seeing the idea elsewhere. I'm so happy to find something productive to do with the fantastic buttons that I inherited, while they are special, I don't want them to forever be confined to a collection in jars.

Hopefully I can add them to my Etsy site tonight. Though it's nearly 8pm, and I haven't bothered heating up leftovers for supper yet...
