Billboard/Banner Dimensions [29 Aug 2008|09:52am]

graphicdesign

[justfeelngtired]
Hey there, quick question about billboard/banner ad dimensions...

I have to make this ad in illustrator. 7' x 3'. Do I create a new document at 84" x 36" or can I scale down? And if so, what should my original document size be?

I mean, since it's illustrator, the background will be vector, so I'm assuming I can; but there will also be photographic elements involved, so I'm not sure.

But I AM sure that some of you can give me some helpful input.
So, shoot!

3D Buttons in Illustrator [28 Aug 2008|01:47pm]

graphicdesign

[bellezzarubata]
I'm looking to make a 3D shiny button but I keep coming across tutorials that leave a bunch of information out, are for plain one-color or what they're saying to do doesn't work (a gradient shape with screen blend mode does not do squat).

I'd like to make something that looks like these.

metallic ink and watermark images [28 Aug 2008|03:10pm]

graphicdesign

[yiming]
Hi everyone,

I feel so stupid for not being able to figure this out. It's a technical question and I'm hoping a fellow designer can help me out!

I'm working on a corporate brochure and the front and back covers have a full flood silver metallic ink. Now there is watermarked images in the background. How do you get this rasterized/watermarked image press ready since it will also be in metallic ink? I've talked to the printer and they said to make the metallic ink whatever spot colour and the image a tint of it, but I can't seem to figure out how to make the watermarked image a spot color.

I've done spot varnishes before and the process seems similar but at that time they were just vector graphics done in illustrator and could easily be made into a spot colour and placed into indesign.

Much Thanks in advance!!

Spot Color for folds in a document [26 Aug 2008|11:42pm]

I've been told that you can use spot color for lines marking folds in documents.

How does this work?

Lifetime redesign [27 Aug 2008|09:56pm]

[ mood | curious ]

Just in channel surfing today I noticed that Lifetime has a new look for their logo, going from this:

Photobucket

to this:

Photobucket

I'm not quite sure when this happened. Everything I read on the subject indicates it happened around May. If that's true I don't know how on earth I went so long without noticing, and why I would all the sudden now just start noticing the change. At any rate, every now and then there seems to be discussions of companies who change their logo and I have not seen this one mentioned. (I did look in the tags, promise!) So just wondering if anyone had any thoughts on their new look or on identity redesign in general (is it good to do, how often it should be done, that sort of thing).

Writing on glossy paper [27 Aug 2008|05:23pm]

Hey guys! I've got a quick question, or asking for your opinion more than anything.

I'm making some "10-class cards" for a belly dancing place, using a business card template. We would have to write on these, the name of the student and expiration date of the classes. I can't seem to find a place that prints cards without UV coating around the Miami area, and if they do the offer linen paper, which I don't know if I should use. Since it's not very reliable to write on UV coating...
My solutions for this are:

1. Use a sharpie on them. I tested this and it worked perfectly for me, but apparently it didn't work for the client.
2. Keep on looking for a new printing place. (Wouldn't the card look weak without UV though?)
3. Any other solutions you guys can come up with?

Thanks a lot for your help :]

The NYT has posted an excellent article and interactive feature on how improved ballot design can decrease voter error and confusion. One of those rare situations where the general public can get a first-hand look at the value of good design.

Client who has two designers. [26 Aug 2008|06:53pm]

graphicdesign

[lilbritty2184]
When client has two designers story......

So my client asked me to make a logo and stationary for them. Everything came out great. The client asked me to e-mail the person who did their website the logo. Sent the e-mail and the designer says it has to redo the entire layout to work around the logo. They also wanted me to change the logo colors because it did not fit the colors they used for the website. Advice, tips?

Has this ever happened to someone and how should I handle it?

UPDATE! AUG. 26. 2008

So I e-mailed the client. Told her what happened. The web designer was very unprofessional. Told the client we can't change the colors because its the website's brand identity not the logo. So I stood up and said a logo doesn't represent a current website. The website should be made around it. But anyways the designer wrote back to the client I should design the website. I thought that was rude b/c its her client too and she should help. Anyways ... its up to the client to do what she wants. I feel sorry she has to work with them because they are making it so hard for her when she asked them to change colors to match logo.

So my new question is.... What happens if your asked to make a website and there isn't a logo. Do you ask the client to make one or just make a web design. Because what if like 10 months from now the client is looking for a logo? Is it pretty much the web designers responsibility to handle something like this? Have you ever made a website with no logo? Of course most clients don't know logo, brand identity then website go first. How do you enforce it?

For a booklet with an accordian style folding, would you set it up in InDesign or would this be a page imposition thing (BookletIE or whatever)?

I ran out of brain juice before I could really get started on playing with text placement for the cog design, but for those of you who liked the old brushstroke mark, I messed with it some too.

Personal business card [25 Aug 2008|05:12pm]

I've had my personal identity, web site, and letterhead established for a while, but I never dropped the cash to actually have any business cards printed. I'm getting to a point where I'm going to have to very soon so I drudged up the old file, made some tweaks and then the doubt started creeping in.

I'm much too familiar with this project so I'm in need of a fresh set of eyes. Opinions?

revised logo [25 Aug 2008|04:29pm]

graphicdesign

[rainisnice]
Tried a different direction since my last logo was quite hideous.

I decided to throw out the idea of not using an actual dog, nuts to the people who want to get cranky over what kind of dog I used in the logo.

After doing some research on the city and its history, I discovered even people in Houston could not come to a consensus on something "Houstonian" for me to use in the logo. I considered mirroring the Houston seal/flag but literally zero of the people I surveyed had any idea what the seal/flag looked like.

Aside from the skyline [too cliche, yes?], most things in Houston are unrecognizable to even native Houstonians, leading me to believe anything I chose would be lost on 90% of my audience. Being that I am from a city with raging pride in itself, I am surprised and disappointed at this and chose not to include anything definitively "Houstonish" because I figured it would be an element of the design that would not contribute anything to the identity and would probably just make things "too busy".

Am I still missing the mark or am I at least on the right track now?

curious about Japanese typography [24 Aug 2008|11:21am]

graphicdesign

[w4lf]
Does anyone here have experience working as a designer in Japan, on Japanese-language material? I'm wondering idly about a couple of things:

1. What are some of the staple fonts in Japan? In countries that use writing based on the Roman alphabet, a list of staple fonts might include the likes of Helvetica, Univers, Franklin Gothic, Futura, Garamond, and Bodoni. (Not an authoritative list, I am not a lawyer, etc.) These fonts are resilient and have been in heavy use for a while. What are some of Japan's?

2. Are there any Japanese fonts in heavy use that pro designers consider embarrassing? Are there analogs to our Arial, Comic Sans, Curlz MT, and Papyrus?

3. What are the top-level font categories in Japanese type? In western countries, we've got serif and sans-serif, and then subdivisions within those (geometric sans vs. humanistic, old-style serif vs. transitional vs. modern, etc). What about in Japan? Funnily enough, it looks like you guys have a serif vs. sans distinction too. Fonts that imitate brush-stroked kana look like they have little serifs, while other, more contemporary fonts don't. Is that right? How do you begin to categorize your fonts?

4. Do most fonts include tons of kanji, or just the kana? (Man. I would not want to be a Japanese typographer.)

5. What are the main web-friendly fonts in use? Western versions of OS X and Windows have Arial, Verdana, Courier, Times New Roman, and Georgia in common. Additionally, Windows Vista added a bunch of web fonts that aren't on OS X by default, and OS X has had Helvetica and Lucida Grande for a while. How does all this stuff work in Japan?

Just asking out of curiosity. I took Japanese for a year in college a long while ago and I've been wondering about these things on and off since I became a designer.

EDIT: I'm trying to look this stuff up on my own, I just figured I'd ask here too. I found this so far.
