Today has been a Get Shit Done day, although it started with a trap.

Car broke down on the way to work. Managed to limp in on 3 cylinders. Diagnosed the problem, took spare part from the boot of the car, fitted it myself in 10 minutes, and was amazed/chuffed that it solved things immediately. No mess, no fuss. +10 MAN points.

Finally got my research project into a mailable format, after a meeting with clueful academic adviser. i am somewhat furious that every time I have a problem, UWE staff tell me to 'look in the manual'... where the answers are either densely hidden or nonexistent. Discover AS I'm putting things in the envelope that the reason I've been struggling to get the tome down to 4000 words is that I've hit all 6 of the assessment domains... addendum paperwork, given out a wek today, tells us to select just three. Mo-Thu-Fu-Kas. +5 to belligerence, +2 selfrighteousness -100 hours of time.

Ofsted want to see me about my stance on equality and diversity. I don't have one, or rather my approach is summed up as we're all the same - we're all freaks. I point out that it's something of an irony that YET AGAIN the TRAINNEE teacher is being singled out as an example of good practice. +20 to righteous indignation/ +50 brownie points. But really this shit needs to stop if I'm not getting recognition.

Post thesis; fly, my pretty. Get passport photos - I look like a thug, they'll do nicely. Have iced caramel latte that makes my eyes feel like they're escaping it's so cold. Entirely complete passport renewal process in under 15 minutes - so suspiciously fast, the clerk seems to be looking for problems and wants to double-check everything.

Practice DJ set for Saturday. Somewhat better than expected... it's not really DJing as such, it's a kinda live mashup which I *may* have to tone down a bit as it's kinda turning into a performance. Early on i dubbed this project A-D-D - short for Attention Deficit Disco - and it's becoming a self-fulfilling monicker. I'll post a short excerpt up from tomorrow's rehearsal. it's a bit frantic, like more musical breakcore without the intentional noise. Me likey.

2 mugs of tea in excellent company, and the news that the world is splitting up. Sad news indeed.

Friends on the radio as the perfect soundtrack to g33k3ry, house maintenance, and completing the latest bunch of artwork for Judder (which after a battle I'm really pleased with).

+40 tiredness. To Be Continued.

Righto, I had better do a serious post about why I would like to do this LJ board thing.

SHORT VERSION:
(click here for really quite long version)

What do you think is the value of LJ?

LJ is the best social networking site (for my tastes). It is imperfect, but for my needs, does everything better than Facebook, Myspace or general Blogging.

What changes would you like to see LJ make in the next year? / What do you think are the community's greatest concerns?

No more spin in LJ newsletters. Plain, simple, no bullshit, please.

Individual copyright control / settings (the ability to flag an LJ and its comments as CC-licensed / Public domain).

LJ should not censor anything that does not clearly break the law. Do not assume the users are criminals.

Kill the clutter: Prevent auto-playing movies/media. Option to hide rich content.

Why do you want to be the elected representative?

I use LJ fairly heavily and it's important to me. I post a fair amount, belong to several communities, run a few, and use it daily. I Basically Care About LJ, No Rly.

About me:

Game programmer, work from home (so I can do meetings / conference calls), online, active and contactable.

I'm a dad, musician, lover of arts and literature, geek, open-minded.

Motivated and vocal. I will speak up, but am approachable. I fess up and fix if I make mistakes.

I possibly care marginally less than the top handful and actually think this is a selling point.

---

There you go. Rip me a new one, good buddies. X

hate-filled bastards on capitol hill ... [May. 21st, 2008|03:35 pm]

spreading more leftist-populist twaddle about american oil corporations. this is deliberate miseducation, just like that spread in the government schools about the history and nature of business.

not for the fain of heart: congresspersons speak )

insane economic ignorance paraded around with the point of a government gun behind it.

now compare and contrast the statements of the evil executives.

the refreshing voices of rationality )

i am disgusted to the point of fury.

lie upon lie, the same ones told and exploded decade after decade.

it's out on the table now: in the brave new world of democratic-party america, profit is only allowed if people are happy with you, and no one had better feeeeeeeeeeeeeel like you're a bad person.

they're tossing their fiddles onto the fire.

[ oh, and the insistent bringing-up of exec salaries shows that the issue in reality has no necessary connection with income inequality. if these congressmorons had any idea how business works, they should call for higher salaries and profits in the oil companies to bring better people in! no concept of innovation or competition - all these politicians can think of is caretaking of helpless victims - while they victimize us (whether we feeeeeeeeel it's so or not. ]

this is basic economics. basic.

and basic justice: companies are not servants. they should be ashamed to have made such low profit rates when they are providing something so essential - and to have submitted to so much onerous regulation and restriction, then be blamed for it!

Rants [May. 21st, 2008|03:58 pm]

marauderautarki
* What race factor?

Below, the first number is the percent of white voters who said race was important; the second number is Obama’s margin of victory or defeat:
Oregon: 7% -- Obama +16
North Carolina: 8% -- Obama +14
Indiana: 10% -- Obama -2
Kentucky: 18% -- Obama -35
West Virginia: 21% -- Obama -41

The more white voters who think the candidate’s race matters, the better Clinton does. Sometimes it's not that complicated.

Which gave me a smile that North Carolina, for all its faults, is a pretty good place. I wouldn't simplify it quite as much, as the generational fight is at least as much of a factor, as well as the bs "experience" canard. But it's a reminder that race remains an issue in this country. Not the issue. Not the only issue and maybe not the largest one (poverty period holds back economic opportunity more), but still an important issue.

* Some thoughts that evolved during a response to this collection of rants by [info]fabianwhig (who's to be credited for bringing up the next issue as well):

It's interesting that whenever the need for spending cuts is bought up, the supposedly hard nosed realists zero in on social programs instead of the massive freaking war, idiotic tax cuts, and hideously bloated military budget.

Now that all that crud (along with gutted regulatory bodies, something the government can actually affect) has helped drive us into the current economic mess -- the only rational solution is suddenly to cut social programs. Horseshit. Let's start by getting out of Iraq, chopping the defense budget down to $120 billion (still plenty more than our nearest rival), stop corporate welfare, repeal all the Bush tax cuts -- and then we'll talk about other places that need to be trimmed.

It is revealing that well-off, well-connected pundits, along with well-heeled politicians, always turn their carving knives towards things that affect other (poor, working class, sick) people whenever they talk about spending cuts, while their own troughs remain inviolate and vitally necessary to national preservation.

*Teenager faces prosecution for calling Scientology a cult

It is a cult, incidentally. The point thus bears repeating: hate speech, hate crime and especially blasphemy laws are bullshit. They are wrong in principle and do not work in fact. They serve to crush free speech and most often get employed by fundamentalists, traditionalists and charlatans for their own ends. There is nothing they seek to accomplish that can't be better performed by the laws against intimidation, trespassing, assault and murder. They are a bad, horrible idea and they will always be.

This is an issue I've gone around with some liberals and leftists in this city in particular on, but no rational defense of hate speech laws has ever come out. Their argument usually boils down to "wasn't such and such a horrific crime horrible? We need hate speech laws to crush that forever." Which they don't. What's gone on in the UK and Europe with both Scientology and Islamic fundamentalism shows once again why they should be scrapped forever. Racism, homophobia and hatred are problems. Making laws that suddenly say they aren't isn't the way to change that.

* This. Is. Mumpower. World, beware. Here is a supervillain waiting to happen. All he needs is a horrible industrial accident and a long-hair cat.

Why Is It? [May. 21st, 2008|04:12 pm]

novus_vita
Why is it that when you are not looking for anything to buy online or at the mall, you can always find so many things that are "perfect".

However, when you are looking for something specific. there are lots of ugly things to be had, but not a thing close to what you are looking for.
