Spoke to Mr Diz on the phone just now.
He's in very good spirits, being in the company other dozens of others in his situation at the prison. He told me that many of his new friends have been there awaiting charges for months...one guy in particular, who has been there ten months, just had his seventeenth birthday.
The problem is, he tells me, they just make up the rules as they go along. There is no procedure to follow, and this is why so many are just sitting in purgatory without so much as knowing what they're charged with. They lose their jobs, their homes, their lives.
It's not very reassuring to know that this seven days has the potential to turn into a year, and we need to act fast. We're putting a petition and press release together, and hopefully we can get Diz and the others deported and home safe.
Diz will receive your letters on Sunday, and I'm continuing to send them to Scotty as they come in. Please keep them coming. Even though our conversation could be measured in terms of seconds, he wanted to make sure you all knew that he was very grateful.
Keep those stories coming. Website goes live tonight, and we begin sending our press releases.

will you be posting the website address and press release in your LJ? I'd like to forward the info to some people that would be interested in Diz's & the others stories. I hope this works out soon.

Will do...this is my full time job until he's home and safe.
I haven't had much of a chance to think about it, honestly. Panic turned into action and I haven't looked back. As long as he's ok, and being treated well, I won't lose my shit. Thanks for asking, though :)

"Recent cases:
Attempted murder: 3 months.
Beating your wife: 6 months.
Child molestation: 1 year.
Drink, drive, kill: 1 year.
Slash 4 women: 2 years.
Torture your maid: 3 years.
Rape a woman: 3 years.
Smoke cannabis outside the UAE: 4 years."

These weren't backed up with links, unfortunately, and I haven't got the time to verify them, so please take it with a grain of salt. I have to add, however, this is not at all out of line with what I've been reading from credible publications.

Also:
Working on expired visa: 10 years

Spread the word.

Tomorrow, I will pitch this to my (THE) editor of the Metro Spirit, which is Augusta's alternative weekly. We sometimes cover more far-reaching issues, and I think this may be of special interest to him. If that fails, I also have connections at our local mainstream paper, and they could potentially get any resulting story out to wire services. That said, I'll write something up for Diz, too. When I read this case (and the other, more long-term cases), I was literally speechless. I'm familiar with people languishing in jail over someone dropping drugs into their bags -- but this is absolutely unthinkable. Have you guys managed to make contact w/an embassy?

No, that's great: a reinforcement of our strategy is always good.
It was recommended to us to get a PR firm on this, which we will if he's charged. Until then, all we can do is wait and hope for a pardon.
Thanks so much.

Sorry to hear about the situation you are both in. It seems so petty and wrong that people would be held for reasons of appearance or other foolish things when so many others who are real troublemakers get by undetected. You must be terribly worried; I was, when in similar shoes. My partner recently fared a very similar treatment, though it was here upon his arrival in the US from abroad in Europe (not in Dubai). He was allegedly "randomly selected", but the process of hazing, interrogation, detention were similar, although founded not on any substance at all but simply on appearance. Once the officials were reassured that there was no threat or problem, they did let him go (on a parole, with luggage bugged), but the key to it was maintaining a calm, positive attitude throughout the ordeal so that they could ultimately see that they were being unreasonable and illogical. I mention this to you not for your appeal as it isn't exactly useful, but for any sort of encouragement it might provide your own spirits. This process seems to be alive and active everywhere, even though we seldom actually see it happen to those we know and love; I hope the Dubai officials see reason and let him leave very soon.

I totally know where you are coming from, and thanks for sharing your story. I moved to Los Angeles last year, and when Diz comes to visit me here he is always pulled for interrogation, being non-white with an EU passport.
Anyone who is well traveled will get detained at least once, I reckon, and I've been on the receiving end twice. The difference is that when this happens in Europe or in 'developed' nations, they deport you. They only put you in jail if you're on some sort of watch list, and even then it's considered an outrage. In Dubai this happens all the time, and there's very little publicity about it, so hopeful tourists keep getting ensnared by deceptive advertising. No one ever thinks this will happen to them, and we take for granted the idea that our countries will bail us out. Truth be told, they have no recourse to get us out, and if Dubai wants to put you on trial you're as good as convicted.
I hope to raise awareness of Cat's situation so that travelers know what is in store for them if they chose Dubai as a destination. There are lots of beautiful cities and sandy beaches in the world where this threat is not present.
Again, thanks for taking the time to comment, and share your story, and I'm grateful for your support :)

Please let me know if there's anything else I can do, my main usefulness is probably sending more mad random emails to bored people, what's the best email to throw them at?
