rainy night, sunny day, rainy day
editor's note: i completely wrote this last week but didn't upload the pictures until today. events referenced herein refer to the dates 5/16-5/18.

on friday, [info]flooey and i braved the weather to participate in the latest improv everywhere mission, which turned out to involve getting soaked to the skin standing on the brooklyn bridge. it was a cool idea but i think it needs to be restaged on a nicer evening. (the idea was a wave of camera flashes that started at one end of the bridge and went across to the other.) i was psyched about it at first, but some kind of organizational problem happened and we were all just standing out there for ages. eventually we ducked out, because i was losing the ability to keep my camera dry, and didn't want to risk ruining it.

the best part of the evening was when we finally, finally made our way home, peeled out of our soaking-wet clothing, and curled up under a blanket with cups of hot chocolate, listening to the rain still pattering away outside. yum.

yesterday was actually beautiful, and luckily we were up and out of the house fairly early, meeting up with [info]squishyent for a viewing of yet another unsuitable apartment. so we breakfasted on crepes and then brainstormed what ovenchar should happen on such a lovely day.

we wound up taking the tram out to Roosevelt Island, where we were able to see the ruins of the old smallpox hospital (which i've heard is supposed to be haunted), a tiny lighthouse, and the building that once was the insane asylum.

we spent the afternoon wandering around, then made our way back to Manhattan and treated ourselves to pizza at Patsy's, which i swear is the best damn pizza in New York, if not the world.

today was, once again, cold and rainy, but i ventured out just long enough to hit the grocery store (via the street fair that, for whatever reason, was happening on Amsterdam) and spent the afternoon baking another experimental vegan dessert recipe. i haven't had much luck with these so far (and if anyone has a good recipe for vegan chocolate chip cookies, or vegan brownies, i want to know about it), but today i made pumpkin oatmeal cookies, and they are completely delicious.

The best pizza in New York is Fiorello's. Although most New York pizza ranks pretty well :D.

Kind of upscaley, kind of busy, but if your timing is good you can just walk in, and it's delicious enough that I stop there every time I'm in the area.

Also that picture is adorable. You are a moose.

We went there on Monday. I have to agree it was pretty damn good. We ordered 1 buffalo cheese with dried tomatoes, 1 that had 3 kinds of mushroom.

i was actually seriously underwhelmed by it. IMO both Patsy's and Angelo's are far better.

the best damn pizza in New York, if not the world.

I am told by many that this sentence (fragment) is, perhaps, redundant. ;)

Although the winner of some fancy schmancy national best pizza thing is Pizzeria Bianco out in Phoenix of all places. (A NYC transplant, though.)

...

You still owe me NYC pizza, as I recall. ;) Should come out there and collect, one of these days.

I have not found a vegan chocolate chip cookie recipe yet, it is at the top of my baking list. I suspect it to be difficult, for how rare they seem to be.

This recipe is somewhere between a brownie and fudge. It isn't the end of the story, but it didn't turn out too badly either. Notice the highly variable baking time, I haven't gotten it figured out yet. Regardless, it will always be a bit sticky:

* 2c whole wheat flour
* 1c water
* 1c brown sugar
* 1c white sugar
* 1tsp salt
* 1tsp vanilla
* 3/4c cocoa
* 1/2c vegetable oil
* 1/2tsp baking powder
* 1/2c nuts (optional)
* 1/2c chocolate chips (optional)

cook water and 1/2 cup of the flour over low heat, stirring constantly, until it reaches the consistency of a gluey paste.

remove from heat and let cool completely.

Melt cocoa in a separate pan.

mix sugar, salt, vanilla, cocoa and vegetable oil, and then add the flour-water mixture. mix well.

add the remaining 1 1/2 cups of flour, plus the baking powder.

spread mixture into a greased 11 *7" pan and bake at 350 degrees until knife inserted into center of pan comes out clean. (25-45 minutes)

It has been a year or two since I made this, so I don't remember why things go in this order. I might also have the amount of cocoa off, as the recipe said cocoa or cocoa powder, but they were kidding about the cocoa powder. It was nasty that way. The last time I made it was with cocoa powder, so that is what my notes had. I've updated them here to refer to cocoa instead, but I haven't change the quantity. I seem to recall it was the same.

Checking out your photos on flickr, I *love* the ruins of that old smallpox hostipal. Why don't we still build buildings that cool?

Also, whoever drew a pacman ghost on a smallpox hostipal is my favorite graffitist ever!

It's really a good thing I decided to give her moose ears, or she'd never have been able to reach to give me bunny ears... (:

(Two addendums: 1) She started it. 2) Yes, I know that isn't the shape of real moose ears :p We discussed it at length that day (:)

Hopefully ya'll didn't decide they were like moose horns, either. But they could be moose antlers!

I'm pretty sure we settled on antlers, but it was sort of a long time ago (:
