They finally released the Linux client for Doom 3 today. Up until now, I had played the first few hours of the game with Cedega (the Windows emulator for Linux, based on WINE) -- performance was pretty good; not great. Really felt like I needed more horsepower
As of today: Wow.
I was hoping that the Linux native version of Doom 3 would yield a slightly smoother experience: what I got what essentially double the frame-rate, and a much more consistent experience. This is all at a higher resolution (1024x768), and detail turned to "High"!
The readme that comes with the Linux binaries quietly tells an interesting story. The minimum sys reqs for Doom 3 on MS Windows platform is a 1.5ghz processor and 384mb RAM. For Linux it's a 1ghz processor and 256mb RAM. In other words, the minimum specs required to play doom 3 on Linux is much lower than on Windows. Or, to put it bluntly: I get the kind of performance out of Doom 3 that a Windows user on the same hardware couldn't hope to achieve.
DOOM 3 proves the (rather obvious) point that Linux is faster than Windows for games....Now if we could just get a few more developers to port their games >:)
