I finished reading the first scratchy draft of the book today (or v4.0, by my count). All in all, my overall impression of it was fair. I didn't pay a lot of attention to the story or the pace of the story, although I did notice the weird chapter run-on issue (see last post) and earmarked a few scenes for rewrites (partial or complete do-overs.) The pace itself seems fairly good, and overall I was satisfied with the result -- even if I do currently view the last 60% as vastly superior to the first 40%.
The goal of this draft was really to get a "clean" revision out of it -- something that didn't have the weird gibberish effect that some sentences in first drafts have, to catch all the superficial grammar issues, and over-all make it a more polished draft. I did intend to re-read it again before I asked people to comment on it, but I don't think I will. You can only read something so many times before it loses all meaning, and I'm encroaching on that territory. I think I'll edit up the current batch of changes and then try to start getting people reading it and offering feedback.
The to-do list currently looks something like this:
1) Complete the revisions on all 183 printed pages. 2) Research the few outstanding issues highlighted from the first complete read-through 3) Impliment a better chapter structure 4) Tidy up / enhance the first 50 pages somewhat 5) Find people to read whatever is left
