Today is my friend Leti's birthday party. In honor of the choice in Greenpoint venue, The Diamond, we christened Elizabeth Taylor patron saint and called it "White Diamonds." You know, "These have always brought me luck" 80's perfume. Everyone is being told to wear white. There will be white decorations and foods (fancy cake, cupcakes, snacks of all varietals) and diamond themed art and streamers. To top it off, James is setting up a DIY photo booth. Oh, and the whole night will be coupled with a black light, so it will look epic.

I. Can't. Wait.

I am making a mix of late 80's / 90's party jams (Crystal Waters, Dandy Warhols, En Vogue, L'trimm, Harvey Danger, Dee-Lite). I am mostly looking forward to reliving 1990 talent show and gym class synchronized dance numbers to "Cannonball" and "Gonna Make You Sweat"

Another cross-country move [25 Jul 2008|07:58pm]

[ music | "Washington Week", PBS ]

Well, we're in a hotel. The car is sold, the apartment cleaned, emptied and closed out. Our stuff is on a moving truck and will arrive after we do. The cat is comfortable and I'm hoping he keeps his cool on the airplane. Like us, he was grumpy while they took our stuff away. He had to remain in the bathroom the whole time, poor guy! We're going to try to avoid sedating him like we did last time, so we'll see how that goes. He loves the hotel, though!

So do I, for that matter. If I could live in a hotel, I totally would. Fun fact: I actually did for a couple of months when I was a kid with my mom, back in 1987. It was a great as you imagine. Never again, I fear.

My aunt is suggesting that the place (our new house) will be a mess when we get there, so we might consider staying in a hotel for a day or two. Guess we'll see what it's like once we arrive. I don't think it will be too bad. The fortunate thing is that there's already a bed and a couch in the place, which will help because I don't believe our stuff will arrive until the 30th or even the 1st. August 1st will also be known as the first day of my new job. I'm nervous! I'm also a little gun shy considering the experience I had in my last job. But I had a great time at Audio-Reader a couple years ago, and this job seems similar in style and size.

The best part about moving is that, even when you start out with a lot of stress, there is a measurable decrease over time. At the beginning there were so many things to think about and worry about, and now there's only a couple of things. And since they are inevitable, there's nothing to do but accept them.

Stephanie says I'm writing a novel, so I think I'll stop here. When I check in again, I will be once again a resident of Des Moines. :)

i was 9 or 10 when i saw my first comet. i was in a car with my family and it was nightime. we were driving into san francisco to visit friends, when all of a sudden a little comet was following our car! i thought it was a miracle, so my dad explained to me that it was only a comet.

i considered it a miracle anyway.
so here is a picture of me impersonating a meteorite/comet miracle in my old livingroom.

i just finished this book by dash shaw, and it is really great. the more i look at it, the more i find. also the character jill kind of looks like me from when i was 13 so it was easy to relate. cheers to being an awkward youngin'!

also, here is a book avalanche i witnessed shortly before leaving california. it was mostly all law books so nobody cared, in fact, a few with a good sense of humor laughed (because it is kind of funny to see a tidal wave of law books come crashing to the floor).

i put my "many-a-story from old scotland to childhood to oregon" bed together last night, and have so many paintings to finish (i've been hermiting my july away due to this), so many stories, so much in my small self i just might explode.
but in short here are some highlights:
*blueberry picking with anja and her nice friends, julianna and myself :)
*helping put together my new prints for together gallery
*evening walks
*my yellow bedroom
*my film camera working again
*new pictures to be developed
*the big dipper hangs directly above my window so that i may say hello to it whenever i like
*missing all my friends and family to the point where it's physically painful
*my clothes smell like fresh chamomile

an ursa major over your head and love to you all!

love, rebecca

My youngest sister and I recently collaborated on a short film inspired by Namuth's film "Jackson Pollock '51." Of course, ours is far more childlike. Especially because it features whimsical imagery which informs my work and my awkward hand drawing and painting to the tune of Saint Vincent and Vampire Weekend.

(You may also notice that this piece recently became the basis for my first Vans sneaker.)

Hope you enjoy this small peak into my artistic process!

i've recently bought a digital rebel xt having upgraded from a canon s5is. and also, in respect, an upgrade from my pentax me super (which i still use). i don't think i've ever posted any of my photography in this community so i'd love some criticism. i also took a class last semester for life drawing and before that a class for beginning drawing and i'd like to post some of my drawings also. i think i've only posted once or twice before. i'm quite a lurker.

onward. )

here's a question... i used to draw really stylized and now, after taking a couple art classes, it's hard to find a style that is visually correct. how do all of you remedy this? does it just take time? or do you have to choose between the two?

[ music | annie - i know yr girlfriend hates me ]

this weekend, james and i drove to south hampton to stay at a free crash pad courtesy of earnest sewn. i'd never been to any east coast vacation "destination" but now i'm totally curious to go to montauk and newport. 40 million dollar homes? $250,000 a month summer rentals? members only beaches? it sounds so douchey but it was fascinating and not surprisingly, really beautiful.

i found a bouquet of balloons at an intersection and we took photos in front of 10 foot high manicured hedges and ran around gleefully. after a day at the beach, strolling down main street, and mushroom burgers, we headed to cat's apartment.

the kids were too tired to go out. so, with sheal and will in tow, we headed to 7-eleven and bought the most epic 7th-grade spread and ordered the worst movie of all time on pay-per-view (27 dresses) and did jello shots. it was super fun.

receipt:
3 charleston chews
1 bag of sourpatch kids
3 glasses of wine (for me)
2 sparks black
3 mikes hard lemonades in a can
1 pizza combos
1 pint of cookie dough icecream
1 sour patch kids
1 incredible hulk big culp (which inspired the party pix)
2 packs of batteries for our inflatable mattress
1 slim jim
1 pack of bubble gum
1 push pop
total count: INSANE

Though i'm sure some people would think that is for the best. [I've seen some pretty awful comments on some of these names.]

Secret Headquarters [19 Jul 2008|11:02am]

My favourite store in the whole world, Secret Headquarters, happens to be about 200 steps away from our apartment and was recently profiled on Boing Boing. How great is it that Dave points out Jodorowsky? I think at one point I emptied out their complete stock of his titles in the matter of a couple weeks, as I went thru an addictive phase of Humanoids Publishing series.

I just wrapped up Ed Brubaker's Sleeper, an addictive noir spy + superhero tale with fantastic art by Sean Phillips, a creative duo I was introduced by Dave at SH (from their work on the Daredevil series. That being said, we're not attending Comic Con this year. Got on it too late and most of my friends don't seem to be heading down to SD again this year. We'll be back next year though.

No Spoilers Review [18 Jul 2008|04:31pm]

typefiend
The Dark Knight puts apologists to shame, proving you don't have to accept the same rehashes of the last 20 years or compromise to create an entertaining summer blockbuster. I've always hated how people often make excuses for big budget films just because they're pop-centric and aim to entertain. Comparing The Dark Knight to another summer blockbuster action flick like Wanted is akin to setting your eyes on a work by Titian after enduring the pop pap of Thomas Kincade (sorry, Wanted was a "C" at best).

Nolan's vision of the Batman is as dark and thought-provoking as the Coen's No Country For Old Men, and arguably more entertaining thanks to its escapist setting. The beauty of The Dark Knight is the film at its core is really a psychological and ethical tug-of-war between two extremes that we all embody. Like all my favourite action films, this films best moments happen when you yourself are dissecting the situations, rather than just sitting through mindless action (though there are plenty of intense action abound).

Nothing is diluted, there aren't any cheezy rock songs or soundtrack intrusions, wasted moments of romance for the sake of romance, the sets and costumes are top notch, the cast and crew bring their "A" game throughout, and a big THANK YOU for the use of a palette that didn't scream "hey, I'm a big blockbuster movie". Not a perfect film, but damn near perfect for what comes down to a film about a clown faced insane criminal (Ledger lives up to the hype) and a man wearing a Halloween costume (I still think he looks pretty dorky when running). The film is filled with baroque plot twists, but never feel contrived, each falling into place with an ease fashioned from thoughtful precision than brute force. Audiences never feel perplexed, but often feel trapped with the same horror many of the characters feel throughout the film, thanks to Ledger's disturbing performance of humanity's worst side. Perhaps not as wondrous and imaginative of a film as the newest Hellboy (which sadly fell into the sorrowful pop pitfalls mentioned above), but tied with WALL-E for favourite blockbuster film of 2008.

From a couple weekends ago. We're spending a great many days at the beach this year. It's been a wonderful summer thus far.

On an unrelated note, I've kept my streak alive while playing Scrabulous against sewdarncute, using only blush inducing vocab. I've passed up on some big scoring combos, but it's all been worth it when my word list includes: wanker, sweat, rear, anus, poon, rim, head, sweaty, and ass. I may not be the best Scrabble player, but I'm proficiently filthy, so that should count for something. I'm still trying to score with "felch", but haven't had the opportunity...yet.

One Hundred Pushups 6 Week Plan: Day 1 [17 Jul 2008|05:46pm]

One Hundred Pushups 6 Week Plan: Day 1

When it comes to my workouts, my arms and legs are the most responsive parts, immediately answering to any call of duty to push my booty. My chest on the other hand requires a bit of coaxing, playing coy like a jr. high first date, always departing just before things get good. I've always practiced pushups as a regular exercise, alongside doing a multitude of chest specific weightlifting exercises. But I've never tried to do a large maximum of perfect form pushups ever, always stopping around ±40, when I tire out from consecutive reps. So when I saw this progressive program that builds you up to 100 consecutive reps, I thought, "Heck, why the hell not? I can already do a few. Why not go from a few to a whole lot?"

Six weeks isn't too bad, and it's only ever other day, so I'm gonna make it a goal to finish this program and hopefully come out stronger and better looking from it. Breaking it up into 5 separate sets makes this feasible for almost anyone, and you can change out a traditional pushup for a knee placement variant or even an elevated version for those who are especially strong already. I'm even thinking I might be able to return to those far off memories of doing one handed sets like I once was able to perform. I started off well and I'm already looking forward to day #2 on Saturday!

Check out the program here and hopefully a few of you will join in.

"Much like ants, termites, and some bees and wasps, naked mole-rats are considered “eusocial,” or truly social. They live in large colonies, presided over by a queen, in which only the queen and a few select males breed while the rest of the colony—all members of the same family—work together to raise young and maintain the colony..."

"...Naked mole-rats don’t drink any water and must obtain all their hydration from the plants that they eat. Their high-cellulose diet is also rather hard to digest, and their stomachs and intestines are inhabited by lots of microscopic organisms—bacteria, fungi, and protozoa—that help break down the vegetable matter. Naked mole-rats also re-ingest their own feces in order to maximize the amount of nutrients they get from their food."
