10/15/05 12:29 pm - Epilogue: Vanessa Pike
Vanessa remained in her family's shadow throughout her sophomore and junior years of high school. She didn't feel like her own person until see became a senior. Vanessa was finally the oldest Pike at school and her younger siblings were in her shadow. She probably enjoyed that more than she should have. Vanessa graduated from SHS in pretty good standing. Good enough to get a partial scholarship to Columbia. With work study and a part time job at a used book store, the cost to her parents was minimal which is how she wanted it. There were still three younger Pikes to worry about.
She had a couple of boyfriends in high school and a couple of flirtations during college, but Vanessa mainly focused on her poetry and studies determined not to waste too much of her time on guys who weren't her Robert Browning. During her last semester at Columbia, Vanessa met him. She met Michael when she started his Modern Poetry class. They made an instant connection. Since Vanessa was his student, they couldn't act on their feelings until after I graduated. It was for her to hard waiting to be with him, but it was the way it had to be. The poetry Vanessa wrote during that period was some of her best work. They married six months ago in a small, but beautiful ceremony filled with love and poetry. They live in a brownstone in New York City.
The poems Vanessa wrote during her last semester of college were recently published in a poetry anthology. She still writes poetry every day. It was her first real love and Vanessa has always enjoyed it. Not all the poems Vanessa submits to various magazines and books gets published, but she's okay with that. When Vanessa isn't working on her poetry, she works as an editor for a literary magazine. She's working on a poetry book of her own.
As the years went by, the more Vanessa appreciated her family. She wouldn't trade being a Pike for anything. Vanessa and Michael come to Stoneybrook as often as they can to spend time with her family especially goddaughter and her other nieces and nephews. Like any self-respecting aunt, she spoils them rotten. Maybe someday Vanessa and Michael will have a child of their own.
