Every year, since 2002, Geska Records releases a thematic compilation to explore new horizons found between Arts and Science, and some of those fragile links between Human versus Nature.
This year, we started playing with the idea of having 12 electronic musicians from Canada translating their visions of this country while using the 4 seasons as a background. The response was so great that in 2 weeks we had our complete line-up ready to examine the influences of the landscape on them and the multiple cultures in which they live.
Inspired by the environmental photography’s of Kendall Anderson (http://www.invisiblethreads.com), we have gathered 12 artists from Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal and Quebec city : Iszoloscope, Urusai, Squale, Displacer, L'Ombre, S:Cage, Prospero, LCEDP, Scott Fro, Liar's Rosebush, PerfectionPlastic, Famine.

Each song on this unique compilation addresses the power of certain landscape features to evoke memories, emotions, and anthropomorphic physicality. Some of the works suggest the potential for experience, while others even encourage physical interaction.

The Other Side questions the nature of experience and examines our perception of our Canadian heritage.
Inspired by our music, we bring forward the special equilibrium we have created with our environment.

Ad Noiseam released this self-titled Lapsed album just in time for his live appearance at Maschinenfest 2005. An audience of hundreds of people from around the world got to immerse themselves in the dark, doom-filled beats that I praise on a regular basis. Straying slightly from the IDM-glitchiness of the first album, Twilight, Lapsed twists the glitch into an IDM-laced hip-hop concept. “Break Ya Neck” is loaded with crisp cuts and droning ambience for the perfect introduction to his sophomore release. The hip-hop influence is evident on “De-constructing Failure,” “Hapless Plastic,” and “’Till the Break of Dawn,” complete with Justin Timberlake samples. Groovy melodies on “Cracked Mirror,” and “We Run With Doom,” capture the essence of Lapsed’s new direction and rank as personal favorites. Japanese horror-movie directors should purchase the rights to “Mechanical Specter” for its spooky samples and record-skipping eeriness and commission Jason Stevens to score a brilliant and bloody movie. Urusai joins Stevens for a genius collaboration of “Where Were You?” and Air Inspector/Aaron Spectre remixes “Break Ya Neck” to round out the 12 tracks of pure bliss. Salt Lake artists Kelly Badger and Andy Pitts combine photography and design elements, making the cover the optimal interpretation of music and visual. This is a definite top ten for the year, and these words I am spewing cannot convey how much I adore this album.

Following a recent listening trend to the likes of Scorn, Mlada Fronta, Gridlock / Dryft, and the like, I was blown away by the incredible talent of Urusai. Flowing, rich ambience, distorted soundscapes, and a crunch of a beat bring this album together, delivering one of the best releases I've heard in some time. Currently, the disc is limited to 222 hand-numbered copies, and isn't to be ignored by fans of rhythmic noise, power electronics, or ambience. Each track shows itself to be carefully crafted, to offer listeners a sort of fine auditory art.

Comparison could be drawn to Gridlock, and it certainly stands up in quality to be the same calibre of work. This is a release serious fans would be foolish to miss out on, and I can't recommend it enough. In addition to a solid full length disc, the second disc features fantastic remixes by Converter, Displacer, Manufactura, Liar's Rosebush, We V2, Ad Ver Sary, Broken Fabiola, and Raxyor. With such names on the roster, it goes to show that he has made a good impact on the scene so far, and rightfully so. The remixers have handled the material with care, adding their own unique styles in a way that does all parties justice.

Copies can be picked up through Crunch Pod, but hurry... with a release like this, word is bound to get out before long, and they'll all be gone. For those with similar tastes in the other artists mentioned, you won't be disappointed with "Microbial." This is sure to become a well known name in short time, and it will be most well deserved. "Microbial" places Urusai high on the list of great producers, and this release marks the introduction of what will hopefully be a long career in album releases. Production is sharp, and the musical talent can't be denied. Don't miss out on this one, and place your order now. Again, highly recommended!
