13. koroshiya and the squat [26 Nov 2008|09:25pm]

I went to see koroshiya at this squat turned bar called ballast der republik. It was a pretty nice place, pretty run down but what do you expect from a squat. The beer was cheap (1.50) and they served a free dinner before the show, definitely staying true to the punk rock ethics they preached. Koroshiya played with D*OpP (he played a set with a laptop and used a playstation controller to control all of the music, pretty neat) and pato, both pretty good noise acts. everyone seemed to be out to just have a good time and even after the bands sets were done they just kept playing noise and everyone was going nuts. I got to hang out with the guy sean who is koroshiya and it turns out he is from long beach and is living in berlin now, really nice guy. here are some pictures and videos from the show.

12. juiceboxxx [23 Nov 2008|09:05pm]

I went to see Juiceboxxx last night at a venue called Scala. It was kind of a wild night, the show didnt start until after midnight and went extremely late. It was a really good show, Juiceboxxx puts on a hell of a show. The venue was really nice, multiple levels with different music and three different bars but not too swanky. Even though it was freezing outside I kept drinking these frozen slushie drinks they had - I later found out that it was some type of frozen energy drink and vodka concoction, which normally I try to stay away from but it was pretty tasty. I got to hang out with juiceboxxx for most of the night, I talked the poor kid’s ear off I think. He is a really interesting guy and also extremely nice. It was a fun night, I took some footage of the show eventhough the lighting was kind of tricky they turned out pretty neat. I kept worrying that my memory card was going to fill up so I kept shooting in small segments, I think the last video (10) is the longest.

11. the record store [19 Nov 2008|08:53pm]

I went record shopping today down the street at a place jut called “the record store” (Brunnenstr. 186). The selection was really good, a whole krautrock section and all music made by blacks lumped together in the properly named section of “black music”. I spent about three hours just listening to all of the records in krautrock section, which seemed to have its ups and its downs. I ended up settling on Deutter’s record Cicada in the end. Its just good old new agey krautrock, pretty interesting. There was some other things I wanted but didnt want to break the bank. Some of the bands that I jotted down were tomita, edgar froese, pot-ent, atlantis and blonker, all of which are pretty interesting. The album covers were pretty amazing as well, so much airbrushed fantasy art. I also came across a sub-label called “ELECTROLA” whos logo is really similar to daft punk’s logo for electroma.

10. the flea market [16 Nov 2008|08:38pm]

Kelly and I went to the flea market by my house today which had an amazing assortment of things. Tons of records, vintage threads, d.i.y. crafts, and a whole smorgasbord of other things. I’m trying to keep to my frugal ways so I just got a few christmas gifts for friends and family and a pair of sunglasses for myself. Then we headed over to this neat russian restaurant called Gorki Park. The decor was really nice and the chairs we sat in were insanely comfortable. The food looked good but all I had were a few russian beers which tasted like it had pennies in it, it tasting very irony. Afterwards Kelly hung out for a bit and I took some pictures of her that didnt come out so hot.

09. lightning bolt and dj scotch egg [12 Nov 2008|11:55pm]

Last night I went with Kelly and Nate to go see lightning bolt and dj scotch egg in kreuzberg. The show was amazing, it was really packed but it was a much more enjoyable environment than dave young’s warehouse in los angeles, which was where I saw lightning bolt last. Last time it was a bunch of teenagers treating it like a metal show and just trying to cause trouble. I had been waiting to see dj scotch egg for about two years or so and it was more amazing then I thought it was going to be. He played off of three gameboys and a slew of effects pedals. At the end of his set he walked to the front of the stage and held out the gameboy and I had to pull the mic plug out from the bottom to end the show, it kind of ruled. Here are some videos and pictures from the show.

08. OKO [05 Nov 2008|11:08pm]

So, Oko has been crashing on the couch for two night and leaves to go back to paris tomorrow. I helped him with a couple of photo shoots, nothing like I would shoot but it was fun nonetheless. We went back to those cement buildings that were being torn down and took a couple of shots and then he had to go wear a dress and have me take pictures of him at some boutique for 20 euro. I don’t really think that was a good deal. On the way home we stopped at this bakery that looked like a ralph lauren ad, and oddly enough sold sheets too, for cheesecake. The cheesecake was by far the best I have ever had, it was two types of cheesecake on top of each other. I’ll take pictures next time I go because I was too focused on chowing down. Here are the pictures from the past couple of days. We also shot some stuff on the subway but I didn’t bring my digital camera so I have to wait until he sends me the scans from his camera.

07. daniel johnston and OKO [03 Nov 2008|07:34pm]

I went to see daniel johnston last night and it was surprisingly good. I’m always wary of older musicians that might have “grown” since their classic albums. But, he sounded like I imagined he would and even thought it was the most expensive show I have ever been to (i think it was 15 euro), it was worth it. I met this guy OKO there who was just in portland visiting the Glass Candy crew and saw my friend Ramona’s band Nite Jewel play. Sometimes the world really does seem small, out of all bands or people that he would meet while there - that was a bit unexpected. He was taking pictures of the show so he swapped me my nosebleed/standing section spot for his third row seat, not a bad deal. After the show he smooth talked his way backstage and we got to meet daniel which was really neat. As soon as Oko said hello daniel instantly responded with “you know what, I really like that black music”. Then he let him take some pictures and drew a picture in his notebook. Oko was in town from paris developing some super 8 and needed a place to crash for a few nights so I think he is going to crash on my couch. Pretty nice chain of unexpected events.

06. wild goose chase [02 Nov 2008|03:56pm]

I was trying to walk to the flea market but ended up completely lost. I eventually made it to a flea market, not the intended one. It worked out for the better though, I stumbled across some pretty interesting sights around the city and still managed to pick up some postcards and gifts for friends at the flea market. Here are a couple of the things I saw on my wild goose chase.

I don’t remember what this was but the roof was nice.

05. too many galleries [01 Nov 2008|03:36pm]

Before shipping out over here I was told Berlin was the “art capital of the world” right now, which I guess is true. I’ve never seen so many galleries scattered throughout the city, there really is about one on each block which is insane. Also, since being here they have had 2 art fairs. Although its great to have so many galleries the work really seems sub-par, Ive only spent two days going out to see all of the galleries but so far the work has been a pretty big let down. It seems since there are so many galleries they will show just about anything, which is good I guess but I think the gallery/good work ratio is way off as opposed to LA where there are few galleries but most choose their artist wisely. Then again I have seen some bad stuff there too. That said, after two days and seeing something around 35 galleries or so, I came across two artist that I thought were worth checking out.

john giorno “catch a falling knife”

jordan seydoux gallery

matt siber “logos & untitled”

billirubin gallery

& I went to see Torstrasse 166, which was a group show/project where they transformed a building by giving artist a few rooms to do whatever they want with. it was pretty interesting. I’m going to check out all of the galleries on index - berlin’s website to save me so I can get an idea of whats out there. more about the galleries to come.

03. ilya [15 Oct 2008|01:37pm]

Ilya stopped in for a night after his tour with jeremy jay was over. We went over to his booking agents office, grabbed a couple of drinks and walked around the city for a bit. We stopped off in this record store just to see what they had and saw a flyer for an adrian orange show that was in an hour and across the street. We ended up going to see him play but after a few more beers and a really terrible dj, adrian took the stage but I was so tired I went to the balcony upstairs and fell asleep on a couch. When I woke up it was about 1am or so and I came down to find Ilya and about only three other people left over at the bar. After we just walked home and half asleep and half drunk I claimed the internet was invented in the 20s, instantly realising there was no way that was true. I attempted to take a couple of pictures of ilya at the venue but due to bad lighting and being so sleepy they didnt turn out so well.

02. food [14 Oct 2008|01:20pm]

So far the food has been amazing, schnitzel out the wazoo and hot dog vendors everywhere. Kelly and Nate took me to a resteraunt down by the zoo which had by far the best schnitzel, served with sauce and warm mustardy potato salad (strange, but delicious). The street vendors tend to serve hot dogs and currywurst ( chopped up hot dog with a ketchup/curry powder mix), both good but I still miss LA street dogs. I’ve been lazy about taking pictures of the food except for one so-so schnitzel from a place by my house and the ramen from the internet cafe.

01. in place [12 Oct 2008|11:59am]

After staying at a friend’s apartment and a hostel, I finally moved into my apartment in Berlin. Its exactly what I was looking for, the only downside is that it doesn’t have a dryer so you have to air dry everything outside. Here are a couple of shots of the place.
