Each month, Zuda's editors select ten comics to compete against each other. Readers vote for their favorite, often going as far as to campaign and sing its praises and the comics which receives the most votes at the end of the month wins a DC Comics publishing contract to continue the story on the Zuda site for the rest of the year. The only way to see your favorite comic continue is to vote, the only way to vote is to head to http://www.zudacomics.com/node/438 and register.

ACTION, OHIO is the story of Detective Andrea Bruce, a Detroit policewoman who doesn't believe in heroes. But when a teenager dies stopping a fire with amazing abilities and the coroner suspects foul play, Andrea discovers a secret town of superheroes while tracking his killer. In the sixties, men responsible for the birth of Silver Age comic books found a town riddled with the fallout of the atomic age and invented fictional characters based on its residents to divert the world from their existence: If America thought super heroes were fictional beings, it wouldn't go looking for them. Supported by an ageing group of heroes, Andrea tries to hide Action from the world but as a town founded on policies of non-involvement begins to crack and Andrea digs into the underbelly of a town that's imprisoned itself to save the world, she begins to wonder: if Action, Ohio is a town of comic book heroes, then where are the villains? Andrea, an outsider with no use for heroes, must choose between solving her case and opening a Pandora's Box of evil closed forty years ago, or putting aside her vendetta to ensure that the sleepy little town hiding from the citizens of the world doesn't reach out, ignite and destroy them.

How can you help?

1) Click over to http://www.zudacomics.com/node/438.
Projekt goggles - day one.

I'm off to a party on Friday where I need to dress as a hero. And, following belle_fille1982's photo shoot on Sunday, I've decided that I wanted it to be a Steampunk hero. Now, I know I don't have that much time to get ready, and to be honest it's not going to be the best costume ever - but I decided I really wanted to make a good pair of Steampunk goggles.

And so, after remembering someone doing something similar once, I got hold of some spray cans - silver, brown, black - and a pair of five quid gas welding goggles.

For those of you that don't know what these look like, they're the ones with clear glass, and a flip up/down dark sunglasses bit. They look like this.

That's with the flip up...

And that's with the flip down.

So the first thing I did was cover the lenses. The whole point of Steampunk goggles is still to look like goggles, so I decided I wanted the lenses clear and not painted over like some people's versions. So, I printed out a batch of 45mm circles and cut them out, placing them in each lens area, front and back. I knew that this probably wasn't the perfect solution, but hey, I'm experimenting.

So, with the covers on, it looks like this.

With these done, it was then a trip outside to spray - because this is going to be in several parts, today was a basic 'hold the part that doesn't get sprayed and spray the rest' part, and Craig will be happy to know that unlike last year's Golden Champagne Glass cock up where I left spray paint all over the patio? This was quick, paint free and painless to the surrounding area. Firstly, I sprayed the green a uniform black, so that the entire unit was one colour. Then, using a brown I covered the part I intended to paint, in a vague 'brush stroke' way of spraying. Then, with this done I went back to the black, overlaying the brown with a light smattering. And then I did the same with the brown. And then then the black. I didn't want to make a 'wood' effect as to be honest a pair of these in a steampunk setting would more likely be leather, so I wanted something just touching on that.

And, when I had finished, the goggles now look like this.

And here we break. as I need this to dry totally before I start the next part, the 'metalising' of the flip top and the lens rims. I think that will be tomorrow. And I'll do the 'rivets' too, then.

But all in all? Not a bad start, I reckon.

Now THAT'S Ballot Stuffing!

So at NYCC I did a podcast with the great girls at Birds of Geek. I know, I've been unfaithful to Quiet! Panelologists At Work! and Geek Syndicate - by the way, QPAW! - this means that after the Bristol Con, you'll be the only people to have not interviewed me - we'll have to think of something super special...

Anyway, they put it up at their website and told people also to vote for them in this years Golden Champagne Glass Awards - and within two hours I had over a hundred emails, many from the same people, all saying 'I want to vote for Birds Of Geek as Best Podcast'.

Did they know what they were voting in? Apparently not, as one voter, when asked what other categories they wished to vote in (as not one of these voting emails had any other categories nominated) they replied...

'what categories? I just want to vote for Birds of Geek. I don't even know what theyre voted for. I don't care about your awards. VOTE FOR BIRDS OF GEEK! Whooo!!!'

Eagle awards guys - THAT is ballot stuffing. And it was done with such panache, that even though Amy's apologised for the sudden influx of emails and has posted on her forum a message from us about it, I'm almost tempted to let the votes stick. Almost. But it's not my choice to make. It's yours, the fans, because we LOVE you.

So. Saturday before the Eagles? We're having an OPEN COURT in the Ramada Bar. The defense council? Birds of Geek. The prosecution? QPAW! and Geek Syndicate. The Judge has yet to be decided. You the fans get to decide, as jury, whether these hundred votes will count or be vetoed - and the very award itself will hang in the balance, because a hundred votes? That's the difference for a win right there...

Nobody ballot stuffs my awards without me and Dan having an excuse for a drink created out of it...

EDIT - and this Open Court? It will be a goodnatured one. Involving alcohol... :-)

Someone listened."

"I managed to sleep on the plane and, once I got home at 1pm the following day, about 24 hours after I arrived at the airport, I found that I couldn't sleep, and what I really wanted to do, more than anything in the world?
Of awards and cheating and suchlike.

Right, I meant to speak about this before I went to New York, but I wasn't able to. And I'll be speaking about this again next week in my column.

It's no secret that I've been unhappy about the way that the Eagle Awards cocked up the nominations this year, in particular dropping Dan Boultwood off an award and also forgetting to place Midnight Kiss. I've spoken several times about it, asking for clarification on what the hell was going on.

Well, I've just had an hour long conversation with Mike Conroy about the Eagles, after he very kindly called me up to talk about them. And to be honest? I totally believe what he says.

I have probably the second most read column on Comics Bulletin. Only Beau Smith is above me. And that's not an image I want. Whether you believe it or not, each column I write has thousands of people read it. I know, it's scary how bored the people in the world must be - but read it they do. And when I say 'Hey look - here's an award I can be nominated for' - people will follow my lead and do just that.

Last week, an anonymous source sent me the actual list of nominations, with figures. I could see how many people voted for me, for Fraction, for anyone. And I could see that on these figures? There was no way that anyone could have believed that I had ballot stuffed.

But the problem is, that people did. Mike Conroy runs the Eagle awards, and he's a busy man. He's trying to get Comics International back on track, one of the twelve tasks of Hercules if ever I saw one. He left it up to several officers to look at and analyse the figures, and several of them felt that votes for me or Dan or Hope Falls were unnaturally high. Because of this? A couple of nominations were dropped.

In hindsight, and with the figures in front of both of us, Mike agrees that actually, Dan did probably gain each of his many votes on his own talent and yes, people may have voted for him that came from me, but at the same time? This isn't illegal. And in fact Dan was mired deep in the list, and would only just have hit the top five after the more obvious cheats had been removed. But he was mistakenly dropped, and for that Mike holds his hands up.

If anything, it's a compliment to be told that the officers making these decisions felt that an accurate representation of people's opinions of me seemed rather high. It means that I'm progressing faster than people realise.

But here's the thing, guys. I'm getting sick now of anonymous messages, posts, replies etc saying that Tony's a cheating fuck. I'm not, and never have been. Neither's Dan. And Mike doesn't need the shit being thrown around saying that he's manipulating the awards for his own means. He's not. And he never has done.

Midnight Kiss should have been in the top five for best reprint TPB. It's not, but this was because of a mistake, an actual, hands in the air 'crap, it was my fault'. And we're cool with that. As long as we know. Cassandra Conroy, one of the people involved is doing her GCSE's right now - this award ceremony shouldn't even be on the radar while she revises, but on the radar it is, front and centre, taking time away from valuable time spent elsewhere. She admitted she dropped the ball, and to be honest, we're impressed she did such a good job regardless. We can't be pissed at her. She has more important things to worry about.

Mike was informed by people who's opinion he believed that me and Dan has a few too many well placed nominations and so decided to drop a couple to make it fair. That none of these experts didn't really know Hope Falls, me or Dan, or see the massive PR push we'd given it, getting us both known more across the internet? again, we're cool with that. It's not like we're A-Listers or something. It sucks that Dan wasn't nominated, but Mike has apologised and will apologise again, right before the awards, giving Dan the credit he should have had. And we're okay with this. If anything we're more than okay as Mike doesn't need to do such a thing. Accidents happen. But we appreciate the gesture.

The Eagle Awards are the BAFTAS of the comic awards. They're the only serious awards the UK give - and yet they've had such a crappy time of it lately, and they have less people working on it than Dan and I have on our mock awards. They're heavily understaffed and overworked, and they get shit every minute of every day. And do you know what they get out of putting these awards on? Ulcers. Fuck all else, guys. They don't get paid to do this. They don't get 'kudos' for making them.

Sometimes they make mistakes. Unfortunately me and Dan caught a couple of those this year. But that's all they were - mistakes. It wasn't manipulative, it wasn't an attack against us, it was a misinformed belief that we weren't as popular as we actually are.

So stop calling me a fucking cheat. And stop calling the awards a fucking joke. Because if you say either of these to my face? I'm punching you out. Mike deserves more respect than that. You want the Eagles to be the best that they can be?

Then offer your goddamned services next year.
