So basically, this month depression has teamed up with the common cold to totally kick my butt.  But I spent this whole weekend resting and I think I'm almost better.

On the flip side of this -- Star Trek has been out for a whole weekend, and I have yet to see it.  WHAT IS MY LIFE.

Ugh, do I want to talk about the season finale of Doctor Who.  NOT REALLY.  But I guess I will a bit, anyway.

Cut for spoilers, and IDK, negativity?Collapse )

I am reading The 5th Wave, and it's really, really good.  It's a YA alien invasion book, and it's just really riveting.  I'd like to go read it some more now.

Except that I'm also really addicted to this iPad game, Blockheads, which is SO MUCH FUN.  I think it's kind of like Minecraft?  Except I've never really understood Minecraft, I tried playing it once, for like five minutes, and gave up because I couldn't figure out what I was supposed to be doing.  But Blockheads is really fun.  It's that whole pixely blocks of stuff, sandbox game, where you can explore and collect stuff, and make things.  Totally addictive.

Have a good week, everyone.

that episode is in this weird place where it's like... not as terrible as expected and as such I CAN'T YET TELL HOW I FEEL. I am pretty sure it was still fairly terrible of course.

Things I sorta liked

  • the opening sequence was cute and made me lol. 'what kind of idiot', what indeed gallifreyan scrap yard owners

  • Clara's cute outfits

  • Clara generally being kinda cute

  • the Doctor said he listens to River and is always there for her. aww sometimes if you squint you can almost convince yourself he likes her.

Things I sorta didn't

  • Strax

  • the plot was kinda fucking stupid... why does the GI care so much jeez? one minute he's talking about the Doctor being ~blood-soaked~ and the next he's doing his darndest to try and destroy everything

  • not a lot happened on screen. I guess it couldn't... the bad CGI proved that inserting Clara/Richard E Grant into classic doctor who looks ridiculous, but it meant a lot of it was just the stars vanishing and then Strax and Jenny and all that. telling not showing, basically. I spent a lot of the episode being like GET ON WITH THE WORLD SAVING and then the actual world saving (or Doctor-saving) was a bit anti-climatic

  • 'spoilers'? really? is the fucking river plot not done yet?

  • but seriously, the whole plot... I am so confused.

  • and did it actually end?

  • no DT or BP in the unreleased last five minutes. gdi I was hopeful. weirdly hopeful given how much I hate that they're in the 50th

  • including all the classic docs here makes it double-douchey to not include them in the 50th

  • now the smaller grievances: I like Clara talking about her mum but I'm on the 'whut?' side when it comes to that souffle line SRY CLARA

  • 'conference call'? time travelling in dreams? clara being drugged without any consent?

  • strax

  • River has the worst life

  • 'won't hurt a bit' 'OW' 'I lied'

  • there was a lot of attempts at build up... like the Doctor crying (although the music in that scene was perfect) that I just like... gave no fucks about.

  • trying to make me care about the fate of vastra and strax is not happening, although I did 'aww' at Jenny

  • 'surrender your women and intellectuals' YOU'RE A CLONE RACE WHY DO YOU WANT THE WOMEN

  • 'doctor who?' i stg i will hurt someone

  • it was very moffat... it was effectively closing a time loop. nobody died. nothing made sense.

Things I that I am... somewhat conflicted/confused about

  • the last scene... idk for a moment there I WAS KINDA DIGGING IT? 'the name you choose it's like a promise you make ... he's the one who broke the promise' Moffat understands the really important thing about the Doctor's name THIS IS TOTALLY UNEXPECTED. Buttt... if John Hurt is a Time War Doctor then this takes a turn for stupid. Idk I don't care that much. I am just so pleasantly surprised by the Doctor choosing his name being the important bit to take from this.

  • Clara saving everyone... this is mostly on the REALLY FUCKING STUPID side of things when I try and make sense of it because of just... millions of Clara's running around every possible adventure. but I guess when it comes down to it she's still an ordinary woman who risks her life to make this choice and that's better than what I expected

On the two-hour finale of the first series of Elementary...
I know it's something people have theorised about ever since 'M'. Indeed, even before the show started airing people speculated on whether there would be a female Moriarty. But I never truly believed they would go there and was suitably floored.
I went in with some optimism about how Irene Adler would be portrayed because this show has done such a great job with Watson. Through the beginning, when she was shown as a victim, my goodwill persisted and I figured there was more to the situation, but still I didn't expect it to be rewarded in that way.
The danger of turning Irene into a villain is that eventually she will have to be defeated, which rather spoils the whole 'woman who beat him' thing if done badly. See BBC Sherlock for how to do this WRONG. The fact that Elementary also depended on Irene's feelings for Sherlock for her downfall is clichéd at this point, but doesn't come off as sexist as it could have since a) it's explicit that feelings were the downfall of both of them, not just her, b) she exhibits a lot of autonomy, agency and brilliance in the script independent of any man, which is all I wanted, and she's his NEMESIS to boot! and c) the win is thanks to Watson. Hooray for the "Heroine" (great title). Moriarty and Holmes are too blinded by each other, it takes Watson's clarity to see the solution.
Natalie Dormer was great, Moriarty needs to break out of prison spectacularly ASAP so we can continue to enjoy her machinations, not to mention the eventual trip to Reichenbach Falls. Roll on Season 2!

The movie was amazing.  I loved it.  I am still grinning just thinking about it.  I think it's at least as good as the first one, which I adore.  They really stayed true to the characters and developed them dramatically, with a lot of fun bonus references thrown in for the Trekkies.  All the cast brought their A game, but Benedict Cumberbatch was incredible.  Meanwhile, the script was tight and clever with a plot structure that clicked together like tumblers in a lock.  Despite all the fan speculation, there were still big surprises I didn't see coming.  I saw it opening night in IMAX with my fellow Trekkies, and it was a lot of fun feeling the same ripple of 'holy SH*T' go through the crowd during the big plot reveals.  We all floated out of the theater on a collective, palpable endorphin high.  I saw it again tonight, and it was still great.  In my opinion, it was worth waiting 4 years for.

On an unrelated note, have what is probably the best Lady GaGa cover I've ever heard.

HEY L.A. PEOPLE!

This Sunday (May 19) at 3:00pm at the Old Zoo in Griffith Park, the Independent Shakespeare Company is holding a benefit show, for the purpose of raising enough funds to put on their summer season of FREE awesome intelligent accessible Shakespeare. They've assembled a festive picnic basket of vaudeville-themed talent, including

- John C. Reilly (yes, that one) who will be headlining with the ISC's house band the Pinchtones
- The Lampshades, a comedy lounge act consisting of Kate Flannery of The Office and Scot Robinson of Anchorman
- Helen Slater, film and TV actress, but in this case songstress extraordinaire
- Mariachi Flor Angelina
- ¡Aparato! (described as "post-punk(y), socially conscious ethereal rock performed with traditional Mexican instruments" which is pretty intriguing if you ask me)
- Nick Bottom and the Rude Mechanicals (the amateur theatre troupe from A Midsummer Night's Dream) in a rendition (truly the only appropriate word) of Macbeth
- assorted tumblers, tricksters and "razzle-dazzlers" (this is a family-friendly show so that can only mean so many things)

Considering this is a fundraiser, the single ticket price of $30 is really surprisingly low, and $60 for a family* is practically a bargain. Please come join in the fun – you're not only getting fresh air, and afternoon out with your fellow citizens, and a really great show, but you're helping to make possible one of the best things in Los Angeles, which unlike most attractions around here has at its core the principle of being freely available to all.
*two adults and as many children as you can manage; there will be no DNA testing at the park

Wow, okay. I lost my post. A post that took me a half hour to type up because, hey, the backspace button skips back randomly and I end up losing some words I don't intend on deleting. Bah humbug. At least it was about tv. Right on.

my thoughts on the tv show cancellations and renewalsCollapse )

Aside from the backspace issue (WHICH IS STILL HAPPENING) LJ doesn't seem to be loading comments or images very well for me. In short:

To make all better, have some Girls Generation:

Two weekends now, and I just haven't been able to go to the theater to see Iron Man 3. Woe. Partly due to the crazy weather swings (Santa Anas - rain - Santa Anas - rain - hot fog...), my vertigo has been going nuts. So seeing the movie in the theater with loud noises and giant motion has been out. WOE.

I really wish I could rent it at home. I'd be totally willing to pay theater price to watch it at home right now.

I remember liking The Doctor’s Wife, but I only ever saw it once, and you know… I can’t remember a thing about it, not really?

I probably should have taken that into account before I watched Nightmare in Silver.

I have been so bad at LJ lately.  I've had sort of a rough week.  Ish.  Month?  IDK.

BUT ANYWAY.

Some good news:  Revenge has been renewed for a third season!  YAY.  I hope they tone things down a bit next year, take things back to the way they were in Season 1.  This year I have had great difficulty following the many, many, many convoluted plotlines.  But I love it anyway, so I'm glad it got renewed.

Also, Defiance has been renewed also!  I haven't actually seen the fourth episode yet, because when I went to watch it On Demand, it was all screwed up and the fourth ep was actually the third ep.  Which.... I'd already seen.

I got caught up on Psych while I was home sick this week, and IT IS SO GOOD THIS SEASON.  There have been a few episodes that have fallen flat for me -- I'm looking at you, Jeffery Tambor episode -- but there's been some amazing episodes.  We may have had to wait a long time for this season, but it was worth the wait.

I was going to go see Iron Man again this weekend, but, like I said, I got sick.  :(  So, next weekend, I guess I'll be seeing that again AND Star Trek.

STAR TREK NEXT WEEKEND!  Although weirdly, I am not as excited about Star Trek as I was about Iron Man.  Which kind of saddens me.  I wish the two movies could have been spaced further apart.

And then there's Doctor Who -- which I have a bit of trepidation about.  I don't trust Moffat.  Tonight's episode was.... not terrible.  Better than last week, for sure.

Is it just me or is there something slightly lacking in Clara's character?  I like her well enough, but there just seems to be something missing.  But maybe that's intentional -- maybe it'll make sense when we find out who she is?  LOL, I can hope.
