this is a bar graph of my favourite pies
Everyone on my flist is raving about how fantastic the new Star Trek movie is, and this irritates me for two reasons -- first because I don't want it to be overhyped and thus disappoint me when I do see it, and second because OMG I WANT TO SEE IT. My dad is a Trekkie and so I grew up to the various series over the years and it has earned a place in my cold, embittered heart.

In honour of that,

I bet you thought it was going to be Spock-vs-Kirk with giant Q-tips of death. FALSE.

They clearly don't make 'em like they used to. I think my favourite part is Kirk's CLEVER ESCAPE. If you have similarly wonderful 1960s/70s cheese to share, I encourage you to do so.

In other news, it is summer and since apparently the government of Canada really doesn't want to hire me, I have a lot of free time. Therefore I ask you, what should be the next television show I compulsively watch every episode of in a week? I'm like half-way through Merlin and I suppose I'll finish it at some point, but I would like another one to spend obscene numbers of hours watching.

Oh, and happy birthday, anythingbutgrey!

LOL at the fight scene. Oh, Star Trek! I think (one) of my favorite episode(s) is the Deep Space Nine one with the Tribbles. And everyone's reactions to the Classic Klingons. I also grew up watching Star Trek because of my father, so I'm hoping to see it on Monday.
Kali: jkr to smeyer: suck it bitch!_thirty2flavors on May 9th, 2009 07:31 pm (UTC)
OMG, THE TRIBBLES. For some reason the text book anthology we used in ninth grade had an excerpt from the Tribbles script in it. I'm not really sure what kind of literary value it had, but it was awesome.

XD I love that. Looks like they're fighting in slow motion. ;) I think I need a TOS marathon. TOS reruns was the first science fiction I ever saw so it'll always be my favorite version, although I do love TNG too.

I haven't decided whether to see the movie or not, but from what I've been reading it's respectful of the original so I'll probably see it at some point.

I particularly enjoy how the lizard man just kind of stands there after he gets hit by a big rock, and slowly ambles over to pick up an even bigger rock.

I'm pretty sure I saw smatterings of all of them growing up, though I think Voyager was the one that was actually airing.

Everyone seems to LOVE it, so I'm sure I will at some point.

Omg these videos are amazing. WOMEN ARE OF NO USE TO SCIENCE.

The evil guy looks like a Power Ranger.

That aldy does a bunch of "dialect" tutorials. She also does one for New Yorker accents. They are all incredibly genuine and authentic.

This one is my favorite:

Later on he uses his powers on nature and calls penguins to his aid and it is glorious.

My roommate and I just started to watch Battle Star Galactica right now at this very moment. We are five minutes in to the first episode and I REALLY want to like it so that I can have a new show.

I ALSO WANT TO SEE STAR TREK... but no one wants to go and see it with me. So I will have to ride the bus and go see it next week. I love Star Trek.
Kali_thirty2flavors on May 9th, 2009 09:16 pm (UTC)
I think BSG might be too dark and take itself too seriously for me. I can only handle so many religious allusions. That, and I already spoiled myself silly for the finale when it aired a whiel ago.

LET'S GO TOGETHER.
nothing but the rain: who | exudewild_sibyl on May 9th, 2009 10:29 pm (UTC)
YES LETS! I WILL EVEN BUY A SODA! EXTRAVAGANCE!

I think I sort of like BSG so far. I like religious allusions and I like stories with a lot of layers... though I will say that is all a little spacey/techy/shoot em kill em for me. I mean I appreciate a certain level of war talk and light jumps and things... but I suppose I'm more of a human interest type girl.
Kali: does it need saying?_thirty2flavors on May 9th, 2009 11:04 pm (UTC)
NOW YOU'RE TALKING CRAZY.

I like religious allusions insofar as I liked Narnia... but I dunno. I've heard it is very dark and srs bsns, and that's not really what I look for in a tv show. I dunno why. I think TV is embedded in my brain as light entertainment and when something tries to take itself seriously I am like HAHAHAHA.

shinyopals and I decided that if Torchwood is an angsty teenage boy, BSG Jr is the hot girl in black that he meets at a gig and falls in love with.

It will interest you to know that I am writing some Ten2 angst as we speak. Once you send me over your Donna part I'll start working on the HDU DIE argument.

OMG THAT FIGHT IS SO LEGENDARY.

My parents met at a Star Trek convention so I grew up with it as well. We have charcoal paintings and memorabilia all over. I thought the film did complete justice and more - I'm even seeing it again tonight. I think a lot of people are going to be happy with it and it'll be rare to find a disappointed fan. I hope you get to see it soon! It's incredible.
Kali: how i met your mother_thirty2flavors on May 9th, 2009 09:20 pm (UTC)
IT IS PRETTY LEGENDARY.

A convention, wow. My dad's not that hardcore, but still enough so that I'm familiarish with the show. And then he makes fun of me for "being into sci-fi". Wtf.

I wanna see it but the one friend who's interested is busy this weekend. Hmm.

Also
If you are looking for TV shows might I suggest the Brian parts of QAF:

Also Futurama and It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia.
Kali_thirty2flavors on May 9th, 2009 09:24 pm (UTC)
Re: Also
Is the rest of the show any good or primarily just Brian? I am always v. entertained by him, ngl.

Oh man Futuram. I used to watch that every once in a while way back in the day.

Aaand I know very little about It's Always Sunny.
Jeanne "dancing in the" d'Arc: Peter/Susan (bitch plz).rose_dawson on May 9th, 2009 09:32 pm (UTC)
Re: Also
I will not lie to you. I have season one on DVD and I watched like half of the episodes once and I can only remember the parts with Brian. And I like some of the other characters, but I can only remember them in interactions with Brian. So idk what to tell you aside from BRIAN.

And OMG, IT'S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA=MY MOST FAVORITE SHOW EVER

I WANT TO SEE STAR TREK TOO. We should go when I'm back in Ottawa and feeling depressed about it being Ottawa and not London.

Um... TV. I've been watching a lot of LOST, as you might be distantly aware of. Before that I watched HIMYM. Before that... my brain is a little sketchy. Have you ever tried Robin Hood? It's pretty hilarious.
Kali: partners in crime_thirty2flavors on May 9th, 2009 09:25 pm (UTC)
YES. You know, if you came to KANATA it would be FREE.

How is Opal? DID YOU STEAL THE TARDIS?

Hahahaha, Lost. Maybe I should watch an episode just to see. I still think it mgiht be too SRS for me.

Omg, Robin Hood. I watched ... one or two episodes, but like Merlin it was one of those shows that I enjoyed enough to watch an episode or two, but not enough to compulsively watch every episode I could find online and possibly some DVD extras.
Frances: DW - Martha's defining momentgoldy_dollar on May 9th, 2009 09:31 pm (UTC)
I might go to KANATA for Star Trek. However, KANATA still sounds like a far off land even further away than the UK.

We tried to steal the TARDIS, BUT THEN THE DOCTOR SHOWED UP AND STOPPED US.

I'm not even kidding. Opal will confirm this.

I think she's on a... train now? It's like when you come into Ottawa to visit me and I send you back on a bus to Kanata.

I think LOST becomes more hilarious when you don't take it too seriously.
Kali: voice of a nightingale_thirty2flavors on May 9th, 2009 09:37 pm (UTC)
KANATA is not really as far off as I make it sound. It's only particularly long when I miss the local bus and am too lazy to walk home, so I wait the full half hour. But the 96 drops you off in KANATA literally right beside the movie theatre.

What a jerk.

Well if you come to KANATA I can send YOU away on a bus. Oh how the tables have turned.

It probably does. Everything I know about it is ridiculous. It seems like it has a lot of seasons. WHEN WILL IT END?

IT IS SO GREAT.

I will consider it. I know a lot of people who love Firefly to the ENDS OF THE EARTH.

It gets less...dull around the 5th ep. So that's good. And umm yeah....it's only 14 eps and they are all up on hulu so you should watch with me.

Damn, I really want to see Star Trek.

I think you should see Supernatural. Just because. *snorts*

List of current/recently cancelled shows I watch/plan to catch up on, in no particular order and having given no thought as to whether you'll like them or not: Castle, In Treatment, Lie to Me, Numb3rs, The Mentalist, Battlestar Galactica, Chuck, Dexter, Leverage, Dollhouse and True Blood.

I don't know, Chuck? Leverage? True Blood? Your taste is so all over the place, I have no idea what to rec. *grins*
Kali: partners in crime_thirty2flavors on May 10th, 2009 01:28 pm (UTC)
My friend Lisa was trying to convince me to watch Supernatural. I dunno, I spent a long time railing against it.

I am indeed quite fickle. I suppose there's also seasons of shows I haven't caught up on yet, specifically season 2 of Pushing Daisies and this season of Scrubs.
Christy Corr: Merlin's saggy left--christycorr on May 10th, 2009 01:33 pm (UTC)
I've never seen you like a 'serious' show (and by that I mean a show that doesn't focus primarily on comedy, sarcasm or Gallifreyian crack), I think. Do you watch any of that variety?
Kali: how i met your mother_thirty2flavors on May 10th, 2009 01:36 pm (UTC)
I haven't, actually. I'm sure there's one out there I like, but in general it's just ... not what I want? I don't even really know why, it might just be because I've been exposed to Grey's so many horrible dramas that I have kind of a knee-jerk reaction against anything that takes itself too seriously.

I think Doctor Who is the only thing I watch that can't be classified primarily as comedy.
Christy Corr: Happy!christycorr on May 10th, 2009 01:39 pm (UTC)
I see. Um. Try watching Chuck, then, I guess? It's very geeky, though, so maybe it's not your thing. I don't know, I tend to avoid comedy like the plague, so I really have no recs on that department. Oh well.
Kali: how i met your mother_thirty2flavors on May 10th, 2009 01:44 pm (UTC)
Hahaha, Ted.

Fair enough. We'll see, I guess, eventually I'll get around to picking some and watching the pilots. I find comedies have a better shot at making me care about the drama because they're not oversaturated with it.

That or I just think they're clever, like Arrested Development.
Kellysweetcherrytree on May 10th, 2009 04:23 pm (UTC)
YOU HAVE TO SEE STAR TREK HOW HAVE YOU NOT ALREADY.
Christy Corr: Status quo.christycorr on May 10th, 2009 07:22 pm (UTC)
I don't know anything about Star Trek, seriously. I will see it, I'm just waiting until everyone gets together to do so *shrugs*
Kellysweetcherrytree on May 10th, 2009 04:24 pm (UTC)
omg dude i know you think i'm major lame for liking SNL but last night Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Leonard Nimoy came on the show for a cameo during weekend update, it was pure awesome.
Annissaannissa on May 11th, 2009 05:42 am (UTC)
Have you seen Secret Diary of a Call Girl? Totally addictive and fun.

I grew up a Trekkie too. My parents and older brother watched it rather fanatically and when I was about 12 we all went to a convention. It was awesome in some ways (the cosplayers, etc) but the actors were really snotty and disappointing. Ever since then they haven't been so obsessed anymore, but we're still all super psyched to see the movie.
