fic: stuck with you
Title: Stuck With You
Rating: G
Characters/Pairings: Martha and the Doctor, with implications of Martha/Ten and Ten/Rose
Genre: Angst, gen, missing scene
Spoilers?: Set within "Blink", so not really.
Summary/Excerpt: Stuck again, she thinks; at least this time, she supposes, there isn’t a bizarre brand of amnesia to wrestle with.

It happens in the blink of an eye; one second they’re in 2007, and one second they’re not.

Startled – because instantaneous time-travel is not something she usually does without the aide of a particular blue box – Martha wheels around, and the man at her side does the same.

“What?” he demands indignantly of no one in particular. “What?

Martha’s gaze travels from the strange cars lining the streets to the clothes and curious glances of passer-bys. Her lips twist, but into a smile or a frown, she’s not quite sure.

“Don’t think we’re in Kansas anymore,” she admits wryly, and when she turns to the Doctor she finds he’s already procured a native to question.

“1969? This is 1969?” he’s repeating importantly, all but ignoring the you’re-completely-mad stare the local girl is sending him as she nods. She sweeps past him as quick as she can, and the Doctor spins to face Martha. “It’s –”

“1969?” She raises her eyebrows. “So I hear.”

He spares her a half-smile, then instantly begins rooting around in the vast pockets of his overcoat. “Yep. We’re in 1969, Martha Jones,” he tells her as he juggles a rubber duck and a toy mouse in one hand, the other hand still searching. “Problem is, the TARDIS isn’t.” He pulls a clear folder from his pocket, filled with photos and hand-written transcripts. “Which means…”

“We’re stuck,” Martha finishes.

The Doctor looks up and nods, smiling apologetically. “Little bit, yeah. But I’ve got this!” He waves the folder back and forth with a manic smile and starts down the street, offering no further explanation; Martha follows, pretending for the moment that having her future stuffed in a clear plastic folder isn’t terrifying in all the wrong ways.

She digs her hands into her pockets and watches the pavement pass beneath her feet. Stuck again, she thinks; at least this time, she supposes, there isn’t a bizarre brand of amnesia to wrestle with.

“Seems like I’m always getting stuck with you,” she says, and directs the grin at her shoes.

“That’s not so bad, is it?” he asks, quiet, and in that one question he sounds so unreservedly sad that she stops, surprised. She stares at him, and once again he’s got that look like there are a million places he’d rather be and a million people (or maybe just one) he’d rather be with.

“I never said it was,” she adds hastily – but he’s not listening, and she falls back into step with a sigh.

WIN I love the 'what' moments!

I am also, currantly, obsessed with what is in the Doctors Pockets!

AND.... I never get to use my Freema Icon

lol I love them too, I was severely disturbed by the lack of "what?"ing in Journey's End. And his pockets are like, fascinating. I want to know if the coat is really as heavy as it logically should be, wiht all that stuff in there, or if the "Time Lord science" magically fixes that as well, lol.

I don't really have a Freema icon, sadly. D: Just this one.

I'm making a list of whatall is in those mysterious

Thanks! I've barely written Martha before so it was fun to write something from her perspective.

The "What? What?" is so Ten.

Aah. Why did it stop there? I've been dying to read a fic about the Doctor during Blink. Hmph.

I love the "what?"s.

There are probably a billion, though I've only read like, one. This might evolve eventually, because there are a efw more scenes I wouldn't mind writing, but that should probably wait until I don't have two papers due next week, LIRL.

I liked this, says so much with just a few lines.. I just re-watched 'Last of the Time Lords' and I think I am finally starting to appreciate Martha.

Thanks! It actually turned out longer than I had in mind, but I couldn't seem to set the stage properly in fewer words.

I like Martha, but I admit that I tend to neglect her more than I maybe should, lol, preoccupied as I am with Ten/Rose and Donna's awesomeness. I have a love/hate relationship with season 3 in that I love some episodes and dislike the others, and my affection for Martha is probably at its highest point in the first and last episodes, lol.

I really enjoyed reading this :D

They toy mouse! What a cute nod to s.4. It's so the Doctor to have his pockets full of comedy props. Then again if you have a sonic screwdriver I guess you don't need much more.

I feel so bad for poor Martha though, always being reminded that the Doctor can't really accept that Rose is gone. She never does anything wrong but he's still "punishing" her simply for not being Rose. :(

Hee I'm glad you picked up on the s4 nod. And yeah, if he as both a stethoscope and a toy mouse wiht him on a regular basis and a rough draft for the Declaration of Independence in his tux, I think it's probably safe to assume he's got basically everything. I kind of wonder what happens when he regenerates. Does he transfer everything to his new outfit-of-choice? lol maybe that's why he wears the same damn thing every day, it's like switching purses, innevitably the thing you want is in your other purse.

Poor Martha indeed. The Martha/Doctor plotline was one that grated on my nerves, I have to admit, because I spent half the time being irritated by Martha's pining and half the time wanting her to slap him for being a dick, lol.

oooo. that's a kick in the guts. *sigh* poor martha, i feel for her, i really do. i spent all of season three trying very hard not to hate her because she wasn't rose and i'm sure it was even worse for the doctor.

I do feel bad for Martha, even if I was sometimes irritated by the unrequited love plotline; she gets such a rough time in season 3 with so little apparent payoff, lol. I like her, I do, but she always comes out neglected in my fics because I like Rose and Donna more.
