If you have not watched Orphan Black: why haven't you watched Orphan Black? I'm confident that like, virtually every one of you would enjoy this show.

(x)

The basic premise if you're unfamiliar is that down-and-out con artist Sarah Manning witnesses the suicide of a stranger who looks exactly like her. Desperate for cash to get her daughter and escape her abusive drug-dealer boyfriend, Sarah steals the woman's purse and assumes her identity in order to empty out her savings account, but of course in doing so gets entangled in the same ~*~*~*world of mystery*~*~ that drove the woman to suicide in the first place.

That's the least spoilery description I could manage, because the show has a number of twists and (IMO) is more enjoyable the fewer twists you know. But it's well-plotted and fast paced and has lots of awesome women characters and the lead actress is gr9. Also it's set in exotic Toronto, Canada, not New York contrary to popular belief ahem Tumblr.

Here, I'll even point you in the right direction.

If you have seen it, COME TALK.

  • would it be accurate to say sarah is/was a con artist? they don't really make it explicit but they make odd mentions to her "running a job" or whatever which implies that she has conned people in the past. it would also i think explain why she's so good at thinking on her feet/generally "being" beth

  • i am not british so i cannot really say with confidence how convincing tatiana's english accent is, though it sounded great to me. but it occured to me anyway that even if it does slip, sarah's been living in canada for what like 10+ at least years, so

  • tatiana maslany is amaaaaaazing though holy crap, and the show itself splices together the clone scenes so well it's basically seamless; at least, it is on a casual watch (maybe less if you look at it cap by cap or over and over as a gif) -- at any rate i don't think i was ever thrown out of a scene by an obvious double. after a while you really do forget you're watching the same actress in every role. her body language and stance and everything for each clone is so different

  • the plot was so fast-paced and fun, there were very very few scenes where i felt bored/restless/wanted to check tumblr

  • all the protagonists were so likable, by which i really mean all the clones + felix;  i was skeptical of basically everyone else but i think you're meant to be, so they did well at creating that sense of "not sure who to trust". i still don't care for paul or the idea of paul/sarah, but his unpredictability was good.

  • sarah especially though ugh what a gr9 lead, she starts off sort of morally gray, willing to impersonate and rob a dead woman, but ends up with such a strong moral backbone and won't sell out the other clones etc etc bb angel

  • helena was really interesting and i felt bad for the obvious terrible stuff she went through but lol @ the tag like "NO SWEET PRECIOUS BABY" ummmm nope

  • alison oh god lol i knew ainsley wasn't her monitor noooo alison, she's gonna flip when she finds out i feel bad. letting ainsley choke was STONE COLD omg

  • i find myself very wary of cosima/delphine but i was glad it was indeed UST i was sensing in their earlier scenes and not just a bff thing lmao i was watching like "lesbians... right? i mean, right?"

  • which, actually, the nature/nurture concept behind the whole show is super interesting, esp considering things like sexuality. there's probably a lot of interesting meta to be written... but not by me at this point in time

  • anyway this show is gr9 tell ur friends

\o/ Orphan Black is excellent, I agree.

i am not british so i cannot really say with confidence how convincing tatiana's english accent is

When I watched the pilot episode, the first thing I thought was, "Oh, they made the main character Australian!" I was convinced that she was Australian for the first three or four episodes. It was only later that I realized she was supposed to be English. Her accent as Sarah is the only weak point in an otherwise flawless and stunning performance imo.

I saw someone in the tag say she sounded Australian too. I tend to confuse Australian accents and certain British accents anyway -- lmao like I think someone said the hotel owner in Broadchurch was Australian? NEWS TO ME TBH -- so I guess it makes sense that I wouldn't notice either way. And I have a suspicion her Eastern European accents were rubbish too but I have even less exposure to them.

Wow, I have seen quite a few people talking about this show, but this is the most ringing endorsement yet! How do you even pronounce gr9, lol? :p

Hmm, I hope they put it on Netflix...I missed the boat when they were airing it here, too busy worrying about taping Doctor Fail...

I was surprised by how much I liked it -- favourite new show of 2013 so far. I didn't know Canadian TV had it in them, lol.

It's quite easy to find streaming. IDK about Netflix, that might be slower.

I love this show, it is fabulous and I'm really depressed I watched the first season in like two days because the next season is FOREVER away but yes I agree with everything in this post.

Yeah, I mainlined it over the past three or so days. I wanted to savour it, but then I was also getting really paranoid that I'd be spoiled, so I just watched the last 4 in a row I think. AND NOW I'M SAD THERE'S NO MORE :(

Yeah that was pretty much me, I was hooked by the first musical montage to "Bad Girls", lol. I watched the whole thing in maybe 3 days, and wish I had been able to spread it out more. 2014 is so far away! I want more NOW!

Oh, I've seen people posting about how good it is. Once I get done with my ~current TV (which is something like 10 different series) it sounds like one I would catch up on.
2nd2ndalto2nd2ndalto on June 24th, 2013 07:19 pm (UTC)
HOOOOOOMG. I just finished the last episode!!!

LOL, I felt the same way about Sarah's accent - I guess I'm not the best judge of British accents either. That's okay. I get so distracted by ~bad accents, so I'm glad I couldn't tell the difference.

WHERE ARE MULDER AND SCULLY WHEN YOU NEED THEM? I'm pinning my hopes on Art at this point. DON'T LET ME DOWN, ART. And what is up with Mrs. S.? OMG. Dun dun dunnnnn.

God, this show is making me crazy. I saved the finale for a few days after I finished 1x9 because I just...had no idea what to expect, which is how I feel about this show all the time, really. The surprises are done so well but it actually just makes me feel really anxious a lot of the time. Like I feel totally invested in Alison and I just really want happiness for her, so I'm just going to be preemptively upset on her behalf until s2 I guess? And I feel like Mrs. S probably isn't a secret Sarah monitor because I think that's what I'm supposed to think, but the possibility still makes me really sad for Sarah. It's so hard to know where to put any hope or lightness? Which I'm not really used to, even in dark shows, I think. But man, Tatiana.

Do you have a recommendation on what should I watch first, Orphan Black, Orange is the new Black, or Welcome to Nightvale?

The internet has told me that these three things are completely essential, I can't decide which to do first, and I've seen you post about 2 of the 3.
Kali_thirty2flavors on August 4th, 2013 04:12 am (UTC)
Welcome to Night Vale is a podcast and to be perfectly honest IDGI. Between the other two... I dunno! I enjoyed them both quite a lot but in different ways. Orphan Black is shorter, and you have a longer wait until next season. Orange is the New Black is funnier, but gets off to a rougher start I think.
