oh my god it's a christmas miracle
Matt Smith to leave Doctor Who at Christmas

Okay, okay, firstly: yes, I know the real problem is Moffat, not Matt, and the real change in direction I want the show to take can't happen until Moffat steps down.

BUT... I'm tired of Eleven. Matt's a good actor, he's talented, and he gave his all to the role, but after the Pond story dragged on so long and s7 took eons, the prospect of having Eleven through s8, which will surely run into 2015, was just not something I was up for.

So I am excited by this, and excited to see Clara with Twelve, and excited for a little bit more life to be breathed into the show.

You may now begin the prayer circles that Moffat will step down at the end of s8.

O#, just worried if we get a Twelve before Moffat leaves then Moffat'll sign on for the duration of the Twelfth Doctor which at this rate we'll hit the bloody 60th anniversary.

IF DAN HARMON CAN COME BACK DO YOU THINK RTD CAN TOO LOL

Yaaay that is exciting news! Although I thought Moffat had said he would be stepping down at Tue same time...or maybe that was Matt re: Moffat. I don't really want Moffat's hands on Twelve...
Kali_thirty2flavors on June 2nd, 2013 03:52 am (UTC)
It was Matt who said he wouldn't out-stay Moffat. I wish they were stepping down together, but if I can only have one, I'll take it over both of them continuing on. I know people are worried Moffat will ruin Twelve as well, but I just am really glad I won't have Eleven for another 2 years, 'm not sure my interest in the show could take it.

I'm also excited to a change. Farewell Matt, you did well.
I heard the Tumblr reaction has been atrocious.
sherrilinasherrilina on June 2nd, 2013 02:52 am (UTC)
Lol in what way has it been atrocious? People being upset or gloating? :p
ibishtar: Doctor Who companionibishtar on June 2nd, 2013 01:20 pm (UTC)
I'm not on tumblr, but someone commented that as well as people naturally being upset, there's people getting angry and either directing their anger at Matt Smith like HOW DARE HE LEAVE and demanding he stay or towards Moffat and blaming him for it and demanding he leave instead. I mean, I blame Moffat for many things, but this?
Kali_thirty2flavors on June 3rd, 2013 12:52 am (UTC)
LOL I certainly don't blame Moffat -- this is obviously Matt's choice -- but I do wish we were losing Moffat instead of Matt. Actually, I'd be happy for them both to go at the same time at Christmas, but if I had to choose I'd rather keep Matt.

Yeah I hope Matt goes on to bigger and better things because I do really like his acting, I like watching him. Win/win for me!

Tumblr's been pretty entertaining about the whole thing so far, IMO.

I sometimes look at your tumblr. I look forward to your 'tales from the dw tag' :)

If the addition of Clara showed us anything, it was that the show was getting stale. I'm glad that we'll get a new Doctor.

I mean, I guess it's possible that Moffat is being all ~coy~ and will step down at the same time as Matt. Announcing the departure of the leading man + showrunner might be a little too much to take in all at once, after all, but spaced out isn't nearly so dramatic. IDK. I just want Moffat to leave, is all.
Kali_thirty2flavors on June 2nd, 2013 05:36 am (UTC)
YEAH. I remember how exciting the first set photos of Clara were just because WOW SOMETHING DIFFERENT. Already pumped for the first photos of Twelve. DO YOU REMEMBER THE DAY THE FIRST PHOTO OF ELEVEN CAME OUT? IT WAS SO FUNNY.

Yeah, I do think he's probably doing s8. But hopefully s8 is his last, and Twelve can carry on unencumbered under a new showrunner.

Well, sorry Matt. But LOL, time to go check out what tumblr has gotten up to...!

Tumblr is doing a lot of crying and a lot of fancasting in equal measure.

I love Eleven and am sad to see him go. He was a great Doctor. I haven't enjoyed the show as much since the Ponds left, so in a way this is good for me. With Matt leaving too, I can stop watching. Their team TARDIS never left me feeling bored or empty. Their characters and relationships always shone even if the stories weren't always up to par. I was actually getting very tired of the Moffat and DW vitriol on Tumblr TBH. I am no Moffat fan nor was I ever, but the stuff going on is exactly what we all hated about the cool kids and their anti-RTD/Rose agenda, and i just wasn't into it anymore. I got what I needed from the final scene between Amy and her Raggedy Man. So I am good with this. Good luck to Matt and to Doctor Who in the future!
Kali_thirty2flavors on June 3rd, 2013 12:43 am (UTC)
I've enjoyed the recent episodes with Clara more than I've enjoyed Doctor Who in about a year and a half, so while I'm a little sad we won't see the Matt/Jenna dynamic for a full season I'm happier that the show is changing up its casting. So much of what has given Doctor Who its longevity is its ability to refresh itself by changing casts, and if Matt had stayed for s8 he'd be the Doctor into 2015 and that's just way too long IMO. So I wish him luck but I'm happy to bring someone else into the fold.

People are always going to complain about every showrunner, especially after they've been in power for several years and have had the chance to make several people angry. I can't begrudge anyone complaining about Moffat because I do think he's done some truly terrible things in his time as showrunner. If I had to choose between Matt or Moffat stepping down, I'd absolutely choose to lose Moffat and keep Matt. But if I have to keep Moffat, I'm glad at least that Matt is leaving and we'll get something else to refresh the show when it desperately needs it. Ratings are down and that usually means something's gotta give, plus I think it's a wise career choice for Matt to move on.

See, I have never been a fan of cast changes at all. Good writing and good performances can keep anything fresh. I would be more then happy to still be watching Ten and Rose for the entire show run. I have watched the same characters on soaps for over twenty year which even though the genre is now dying out, they still had a much longer longevity then DW (I started at age 5 with my grandmother. Just so no one thinks I am ancient). And I love those characters as much today as I did on day one. Not the stories necessarily, but them, yes. There is a big difference IMO between complaining and vitriol. Daytime fandom can throw out truly terrible things, but some of the stuff I have seen lately...puts it to shame in many ways. And I do begrudge that. It makes me ashamed of the years that I participated in it or any fandom ridiculousness. Though in DW fandom I never got to the level that some of this has. And I went toe to toe with some of the biggies as I was an early member of time and chips. I also had 9/11 thrown up at me by some of them which in my situation is as low as anyone can go, but still this go around leaves more of a bad taste in my mouth.

I like Clara, but I got nowhere near the joy with her as companion to Eleven that I did with the Ponds. And there were many times in the beginning of Matt's run that the plots really did leave me cold, so I truly get where some people are coming from on that score. But the bond between Amy and the Doctor was amazing to me in a way I haven't felt since the love of the Doctor and Rose. And I felt every smile, tear and broken heart as I watched Amy and Rory journey in the TARDIS. Though River I could have done without. And I hated that Melody was stolen out of Amy's arms and the reaction was... ehh you know who she turns out to be, so no big deal that you two don't get to raise your own child and that you lost her in an extremely traumatic way (though I thought those episodes and performances by all three actors was extraordinary). So I did have complaints too. :)

I have some great memories of the show and will watch until Matt departs, and I am happy for all those who are excited by the changes to come.

Good writing can keep stuff fresh, maybe, but Doctor Who has not IMO had good writing in ages. In the meantime what makes it possible for people like me to stick with the show and hold out through what is hopefully just a rough patch is the idea that there might be something better coming soon -- a new companion, a new Doctor, a new writer that might spark that same love I used to have. So I look forward to new companions and new Doctors. I looked forward to meeting Amy and Eleven even when we were losing Ten, and I loved Ten a lot. The constant change in Doctor Who is a big part of the appeal for me.

I honestly have not seen anything thrown at Moffat that is particularly out of the normal realm of fandom complaining, and I travel in circles that complain about Moffat a lot. On rare occasions you might get someone who steps over the line, but you get those types of ludicrous people in every corner of the internet, and generally I've learned to avoid them. But if the fandom has become an unhappy place for you, I guess it's for the best that now you'll only have two episodes left to care about.
Kammi: Amy and Rory - TARDIS=Homekammgirl on June 3rd, 2013 07:17 am (UTC)
I hope the change and new Doctor is everything you want it to be. I would have rode through the fandom stuff had my interest still been there, but I think I am at a good place with the show and will just enjoy what is left and all the pretty Doctor/Rose posts I see on tumblr. I will still love reading my flist's thoughts on everything. :)

ETA: I hope I am not coming off as trying to begrudge anyone's excitement or happiness with the changes to come. Nor do I at all think that what I view as ugly fandom tactics should be everyone's definition. I have felt this way about the fandom stuff for a long time, however I respect everyone's opinions. I guess for me after years of being online and seeing it get nastier and nastier as the years go by, it just kind of took some of the fun out of things for me. But again this is just me and I am not trying to taint anyone's else's excitement. That is not my intention at all.
