I wrote my reaction before I read anyone else's and... it... seems I am on sad minority island this week? :( I WANT TO WATCH THE EPISODE YOU GUYS WATCHED BECAUSE YOU ALL LIKED IT AND I WAS SITTING THERE LIKE 'oh'. Maybe I'll try tomorrow and see if my opinion changes when I am more awake. But here were my thoughts:

  • hardly the worst ep ever but iw as really disappointed because i had such high hopes :(

  • lesson learned, never expect quality from this show

  • anyway, it was... pretty meh

  • i kind of liked the idea of the ghost as a time traveler who got lost

  • but the rest of it with thebubble universe full of a collapsing forest with crab demon monsters was ?????????????

  • the love story between the professor and mary-ann was blah

  • the second love story being between two crab monsters was hILARIOUS

  • i haven't checked my dash but i can already promise there are 396293626 posts on tumblr flipping out about lovers in parallel worlds, i feel it in my bones

  • this episode aired like 10 hours ago so has anyone yet written angsty ten redesigning his spacesuit, because LOL

  • clara felt underused/used poorly, she was just kind of there and she didn't even offer to go with the doctor or anything which seemed odd and uncompanionish

  • the tardis/clara thing has officially reached the realm of terribleness

  • it's basically all those fics where the tardis hates martha because reasons

  • i guess the tardis can talk directly to companions now

  • i guess she can also fly herself to save the doctor from danger

  • i guess this aspect will never, ever, ever be discussed in subsequent episodes, just as it was apparently never ever ever discussed in previous episodes

  • seriously it invalidates like... 90% of episodes. i was thinking of POTW specifically, but there's a trillion more

  • stay tuned next week for the tardis trying to literally murder clara

  • in summary, what the fuck

  • i wanted more from the scene where clara muses on the doctor being ancient and forever vs humans. it was like a poorly done "you look like giants" or "you are enormous parts of my life". eleven could've been 50000% more comforting than he was but then lol nothing new there i guess

  • i was surprised by the context of "you are the only mystery worht solving" though -- it was in response to clara asking about how he sees humanity in general, not how he sees her. i think you can potentially abstract it to some interesting implications there if we assume he's not ONLY talking about clara

  • still though, that scene should've been more than it was and i was disappointed. i kept waiting for a line to nail it and it never came

  • in general i guess that's how i felt about the whole ep: kept waiting for it to all come together, but it didn't

I'm sorry you couldn't jump on the love bandwagon, because the episode the rest of us watched was pretty damn satisfying?

I don't know. When I look objectively at each of your bullet points in turn I get where you're coming from. You're not wrong. And yet... stupid contradictory shit happens on this show all the time, even when I like it, and this struck me as more Rusty's brand of dumb shit than Moffat's. I guess I file it under Tinkerbell Jesus Doctor territory: if you think about it non-metaphorically for more than two seconds you hate everything about it, but the themes are so key to what's important about this show that you give them a pass. (Why did it take Jackie showing up with the truck for the panel to open in POTW? Because she had to believe in Rose doing it.)

and speaking of POTW, I will now play make-excuses-for-the-dumb-thing girl, because apparently I'm now willing to be an apologist and look the other way for this show, which I haven't been able to bring myself to do for about two years, so you'll forgive me: I think that, in terms of the TARDIS flying herself to save the Doctor, she has to be asked? i.e. the TARDIS, in police box form, is sentient enough to REACT, but not necessarily to ACT. ...also the cloister bells were ringing so if there's ever a time to break rules, it's probably then.

god i don't know ignore me it was dumb but it was MY KIND OF DUMB

(Why did it take Jackie showing up with the truck for the panel to open in POTW? Because she had to believe in Rose doing it.)

Well, and because a truck is stronger than Mickey's car. Jackie helping Rose is a big part of the emotional plot, but the way she chooses to help Rose also makes real-world plot sense, ie that a truck would be stronger than a car.

I can handwave some silly plot things if the emotional threads are there -- I LOVED Rings of Akhaten even though its science was deeply questionable, because there were good speeches and good character connections and all that. I didn't really see any of those things in "Hide". I was meant to be invested in Professor/MaryAnn after meeting them for about two minutes and seeing them interact like once, but I never cared. Most of the emotional beats they tried to hit fell flat for me, and all that was left behind was a really bad plot that involved the TARDIS flying herself because Reasons. If all you ever had to do was ask the TARDIS, POTW would never have happened the way it did, and there's a dozen more episodes where the big conflict could've been solved in two seconds if the TARDIS was able to fly herself to the Doctor.

I dunno, I still haven't rewatched so I may change my mind a little then, but I really didn't connect with any of the deeper stories that were (apparently) at play here that resonated with everyone else so much.

I was slightly spoiled for the episode before I watched it, so I assumed the lost time-traveller/ghost was going to be one half of the trapped-in-different-dimensions love story and that someone else trying to find her would be the other half. And then that plot ended up being between two crab monsters. So... yeah.

Kali_thirty2flavors on April 22nd, 2013 05:48 am (UTC)
LOLLL

I had read that there was a love story at the heart of it, so I assumed it was Professor/MaryAnn. The crab people was unexpected.

This is one of those eps that I did enjoy, but even as I was writing my reaction post I was questioning how much of my enjoyment was legitimate and how much was BETTER THAN LAST WEEK SO THAT'S GREAT. Lol whereas with TRoA I didn't really have these feelings, so I think that one's definitely staying at the top of my list.

That scene with Clara and Eleven in the TARDIS... I loved everything Clara said and did and thought it was great. But then Eleven HAD TO FUCK IT UP UGH. It was one of those scenes that was calling for one of his inspirational humans-are-great quotes and the ~mystery~ line just did not deliver.

omg lol the TARDIS thing. WHAT I DON'T GET is that Eleven is like, taking Clara to the 70s so he can get a psychic to spy on her and EVERYTHING HE DOES is just saying she's an ordinary human. And yet... the TARDIS hates her because of reasons. SURELY THE MOST LOGICAL THING TO DO TO SOLVE THE MYSTERY WOULD BE TO ASK THE EFFING TARDIS.
Kali: dw :: FROLICKING ON GALLIFREY_thirty2flavors on April 22nd, 2013 10:44 pm (UTC)
Yeah Clara's half of that scene was good but like I said I was waiting for a great speech or line from the Doctor and it never came. "Mystery worth solving" is a bit eh, and really doesn't communicate the obvious appreciation for humanity that the Doctor has. It's much more than just being "mysterious".

LOL YEAH, get the TARDIS' voice software to answer you geeze.

I've already seen three.

Ugh this post makes me so mad. Fucking Moffat, shitting on continuity/invalidating shit written by a far superior showrunner. I cannot.

Just saw your post on Tumblr about how Eleven was able to hold on to the side of the TARDIS through the vortex. My handwave is that this is a special circumstance where the TARDIS was using the tunnel opened by Emma and the Metebelis 3 crystal, which is not as lethal as the vortex (the Doctor jumped down it earlier without protection). In a weaker way this could also explain why the TARDIS could fly itself over to the Doctor without someone looking into its heart and controlling it.
Kali: dw :: cloen/rose :: bow chicka bow wow_thirty2flavors on April 22nd, 2013 10:48 pm (UTC)
We saw the TARDIS enter through the vortex, so I assumed it passed through the vortex one way, but maybe not on the exit trip? I dunno. The TARDIS canon in this ep was obviously a mess IMO, lol.

the second love story being between two crab monsters was hILARIOUS

My fave part. :P

I actually did enjoy it though! I thought it was nicely creepy and I appreciated the scene where Clara mused on the Doctor being ancient and forever. I liked the idea of humans all being ghosts to him.
Kali: dw :: teamtardis :: trifecta of awesome_thirty2flavors on April 22nd, 2013 10:54 pm (UTC)
I thought the creepiness was pretty well done, for the most part. Very atmospheric. And it wasn't terrible, I guess -- but after TROA and considering some of the screencaps I had really high expectations that I didn't think it followed through on. Ah, well.

I liked the idea of that scene, but I thought it was missing a line to put a real button on it -- "the only mystery worth solving" didn't really do it for me.

So I haven't watched this yet, but the comments about the TARDIS and Clara make me think of Tinkerbelle and Wendy. That's all.
willendinrain: Waters of Marswillendinrain on April 22nd, 2013 08:30 pm (UTC)
I really enjoyed this episode. I liked the musing of Clara on the Doctor. And I loved that Emma cautioned her against the Doctor with "he has a silver of ice in his heart". I also thought the conversation between the professor and Emma about the need to lie comes with experience was interesting when applied to Emma's view of the Doctor vs. the professor. I thought the TARDIS snarking Clara was pretty funny, and I am hoping that the TARDIS' "dislike" of her will be revealed in time...and have something to do with her "identity"...idk, maybe her infinite selves makes the TARDIS nauseated. lmao.
Kali_thirty2flavors on April 22nd, 2013 11:05 pm (UTC)
I wanted to like it and had been really looking forward to it, but overall I was pretty cold on it. I thought it had a lot of potential it didn't live up to, which is one of the most frustrating things a story can do to me, lol.

I'm wondering if the TARDIS' "dislike" isn't something else. My Clara theory is that we're now travelling with Original Clara, and something happens to her in the finale that results in the creation of Victorian Clara and Oswin. So I wonder if maybe the TARDIS is reacting against that, and trying to prevent it by trying to keep Clara out.
willendinrain: bbAmyfezwillendinrain on April 23rd, 2013 01:23 pm (UTC)
Well, I would certainly understand the TARDIS at this point trying to save innocence. ::side-eyes Eleven:: ::hard::

I feel similarly about this being the Original Clara, what with her "creating" her nickname Oswin and falling into a position as a nanny. I am hoping that there is another explanation though....something where the Doctor doesn't ruin his companions' lives...actually, idek what to hope for at this point.
in_comescompany: Elevenin_comescompany on April 22nd, 2013 09:44 pm (UTC)
THEORIES ABOUND.

So I was thinking how the Doctor is so concerned with finding out what/who Clara is, and how this episode had Emma confirming she was just a normal girl. What if Clara truly is a normal girl, but it's the Doctor trying to figure out what she is and interfering and pursuing that future that, idk, ~alters Clara in some way? Like a self-fulfilling prophecy, except if the Doctor had just let her be none of it would have happened.

I have no idea how the TARDIS not liking her fits into that, though. I can only hope that the TARDIS not liking her has something to do with it being able to fly on its own, because it's been such a big deal in earlier seasons that the TARDIS can't do that unless it's on an emergency program...though maybe that's what this episode was trying to say it was? IDK, I was kind of like "HEY, WHAT?"

I also drew the comparison between "I think you look like giants" and the"[humanity is] the only mystery worth solving" speech, but the latter just didn't resonate for me like the former did. Same with the comparison between Rose seeing the end of the world and Clara seeing the end of the world. I can't decide if it was just because I'd heard it before, and that's why it was meh, or something else.

I didn't hate this episode like most of the beginning of season 7, so I guess that's an improvement. I don't feel like recent episodes have been "OMG AMAZING THIS IS WHY I LOVE THIS SHOW," but for now I'll take "pretty good" over "LOATHE WITH THE FIRE OF A THOUSAND SUNS."
Kali: eng :: a star danced_thirty2flavors on April 22nd, 2013 11:12 pm (UTC)
Yes, my Clara theory since BOSJ has been that the Clara we have now is the "original flavour" Clara, the real/true Clara, Clara 1.0, however you want to see it -- and then it's by travelling with the Doctor that something happens to her and results in Victorian Clara and Oswin being created somehow. There's lots of reasons for this, but everyone's insistence that this Clara is a perfectly ordinary girl just backs me up, I think. Plus, it would be one big time loop, and we know Moffat loves those.

As for the TARDIS, I'm wondering if maybe the TARDIS reacts against her because it knows that? Like, it knows Clara is kind of a self-fulfilling prophecy, and that something bad is going to happen to Clara to "scatter" her, and is reacting against that? I dunno. I think the rest of hte TARDIS stuff in this episode was just anomalous writing, I doubt we'll ever get a satisfactory explanation for the voice interface or the self-driving TARDIS.

I didn't hate this ep but I didn't love it either -- it didn't live up to the potential I think it had. It had moments that could have been very powerful, like the "ghosts" speech, and yet it fell short of delivering.

Ummm do you even LIKE this show?? Why are you watching it if all you do is complain about it?? Can't you do something you enjoy for once? WHY ISN'T THIS MEDIOCRITY GOOD ENOUGH FOR YOU IT'S BETTER THAN THE SHIT BEFORE WHICH I PREVIOUSLY THOUGHT WAS THE PINNACLE OF ALL HUMAN STORYTELLING

Heh, see this is how I felt reading your review of TRoA--because while the flashbacks of her parents and the scene with the little girl were great, the rest to me was a M E S S, and I'm still not even sure what quite happened, tbh. I loved this episode though!

I mean yeah, the human romance was stupid and I was rolling my eyes throughout those bits, and the person they rescued didn't react normally for someone suddenly in the 1970s with little explanation. But I actually loved Clara in this episode, and her interactions with Eleven--she at least went back and got him! (I don't think there would have been a logical reason for her to bungee in with Eleven in the first place).

I am fine with the TARDIS being mean because it's like how it tried to shake off Jack in that one episode--it doesn't like anomalies in time, and it's part of the mystery I suppose.

And I thought Clara's ghost speech was well done (I can't even remember this giants speech you are referring to, guess I need to reach). And lol, yes, I saw gifsets about the parallel universe love before even watching the epp! ;)

To be honest the more time has passed the more I've come to hate this episode lmao. I'M SO MAD IT COULD'VE BEEN GOOD AND THEN IT SUCKED RAHHHH et cetera. I think it's exacerbated by how much everyone else is singing its praises, one of those "I feel like I'm taking crazy pills!" situations.

That said I don't really know how to respond to most of this, I always feel like a dick telling people why I hated this episode they loved lmao. So I am glad you liked it, I guess. And slightly jealous. Because I really did not.

The giants speech is from End of Time! Wilf is all "we must look like insects to you" and Ten says "I think you look like giants". And that was infinitely more meaningful and emotional to me than "humans are like puzzles I like solving, trololo". I dunno, I really wanted something about the beauty of humanity and instead Eleven was just like "I enjoy puzzles". Goddamn, Eleven.

Rosa | ¯\(ºдಠ)/¯rosaxx50 on May 7th, 2013 10:36 am (UTC)
Lol I quite liked this episode, largely on part of the thriller atmosphere. I could do without Eleven's fixation on discovering Clara's background, dragging her to 1970s to do that, etc.

I'm more eh about The Professor/Mary-Anne than anything else. The episode tried to make me care and... failed. I think my favourite part about their relationship though was that in the climax of the episode Mary-Anne does the work and the Professor is there to provide emotional support, forever amused.

I'm assuming the Doctor's adjustments to the TARDIS that he mentioned in Cold War had something to do the TARDIS flying to him? Mostly, I was glad we got to see the TARDIS as a character.

I had Doctor/Rose feelings ngl but lol @ them being paralleled by monsters.
