mark gatiss does it again!!

  • god that was awful

  • fuck mark gatiss' friendship with moffat that ocntinues to get him contracts because he is awful

  • just awful

  • so boring

  • no suspense

  • i would have enjoyed reading the butter battle book more

  • not nearly enough clara imo

  • she was cute with 'the professor' though, i thought her singing would be relevant b/c of the sonic stff and because of the guy's daughter but i guess not!!!!!! ok gatiss

  • unless i am meant to assume skaldak heard clara half-whisper sing one single line of the song from up in his martian ship and that's what made him decide to show mercy, which if so: ok gatiss

  • i've come to realize i enjoy episodes more when we start with team tardis and follow them to a place, rather than when we open with random extras in crisis and the tardis materializes. i was wondering if there's an exception to this rule but i couldn't name any.

  • i'm also bored of bringing back classic monsters and then doing fuck all interesting things with them. like, okay, ice warriors, gr8. but that was p much all this episode had to offer, "look it's an ice warrior". like.. k

  • dead @ the scene where the doctor is negotiating with a pair of red glowing eyes what the fuck

  • the triggerhappy russian guy was irrelevant omg i thought he was going to team up with skaldak or something, all he did was teach him a new word

  • "soon there will be another red planet, red with the blood of humanity" your honour i rest my case

  • OH AND: THE TARDIS IS AT THE SOUTH POLE. 'CAN YOU GIVE US A LIFT'. TO THE SOUTH POLE. fuck everything this ep was a travesty

I mostly like, can't even be bothered to react to this ep. THE EFFORT REQUIRED TO TYPE AN LJ POST IS JUST TOO MUCH.

and lol @ the TARDIS at the south pole. I would watch the adventures of Clara and Eleven hitchhiking to find the TARDIS but just... thrown in there at the end like this is not a big deal is ridiculous.

IT'S THE SOUTH POLE

YOU CAN'T JUST... GO TO THE SOUTH POLE

GOD

and like... height of the cold war as well. ARE THEY PLANNING ON PRETENDING TO BE RUSSIANS OR SOMETHING? IT SEEMS LIKE REGARDLESS OF WHAT THEY DO AT SOME POINT THEY'LL BE ACCUSED OF SPYING BY SOMEONE ELSE. Unless the captain of the (broken) sub literally takes them the whole way there and p sure that's a little outside of his remit.

yeah it was terrible. :/

I had low expectations because I don't like Gatiss' writing, but I was still irritated by how bad it was.

Well that would explain why this is the first reaction post to show up on my flist, 24 hours after broadcast!

LOL Especially after last week, when everyone was so eager to show appreciation for TROA.

Have you been watching Broadchurch, btw? I'm like... surprisingly super into it. I can only assume Chibnall sold his soul to the devil, because his DW eps in s7a were my favourites as well (though that says little).

I'm an episode behind with Broadchurch but I didn't even realise it was Chibster until a couple weeks ago and lol apparently the stink of Chibnall has abated somewhat. I tend to watch it while I'm taking care of Rory so I'm often distracted (hence not seeing the names in the credits) but I am liking it.

Lol, I actually enjoyed this one a bit more than the last one (I just got lost with all the singing last week), because I loved Clara's reactions, wanting to be brave and help negotiate but still feeling nervous--it just felt realistic to me (well minus her not being annoyed about the lack of Vegas). Also I'm a big fan of Titanic and Lovejoy the Evil Henchman reappearing as a Duran Duran-fanboy professor gave me a lot of entertainment, in addition to Davis Seaworth from GoT as a Faux Russian captain (and apparently the trigger-happy guy is going to play Cat's flop brother Edmure on GoT this season, lol?). But yeah, pretty meh aside from.the lulz factor--the line about the red planet and the ridiculous appearance of the Martian kind of gave me life NGL, because lawd.

Next episode looks really creepy/good though!

I did like some of the Clara bits -- I LOVE NEW COMPANIONS ugh now I'm so mad we got stuck with Amy for so long/am praying to the old gods and the new that Clara leaves in a timely manner, because it really revitalizes the show to have someone who is a bit uncertain about all this stuff, but excited too. I really liked her scene with the professor where she was admitting she was scared and he was trying to keep her spirits light, even though some of the dialogue was stilted imo.

But the rest of it was yeah, really meh.

What is this about the Cold War and the South Pole?
Kali_thirty2flavors on April 14th, 2013 06:12 pm (UTC)
Trying to take Clara to Vegas, Eleven ineptly lands the TARDIS on a sinking Soviet submarine in 1983.

The TARDIS mysteriously dematerializes, and at the end he explains to Clara that he re-activated a setting on the TARDIS that makes it dematerialize if it's under attack. (The stupidest thing, since the TARDIS is apparently indestructible.) And he says it dematerialized to the South Pole. So I guess they have to go to the South Pole to fetch the TARDIS.

Accurate. It was so dull I don't even have anything to say about it. /shrug

I've enjoyed listening to Hungry Like the Wolf for a while afterwards. That's about it.

I've definitely seen worse, but I also wandered away from watching it halfway through and came back like 6 hours later, so maybe it's just not as offensive when broken into two parts.

Gatiss is just so... mediocre. Mostly I'm just laughing at all these people on tumblr who are like "the barbie is supposed to symbolize Rose!!!!!!!" because I'm hard pressed to think of a dumber, more random connection from something totally irrelevant (excluding theories from the HP fandom, of course).
Kali_thirty2flavors on April 14th, 2013 10:42 pm (UTC)
I've seen worse but I am hard pressed to think of an episode I've found as boring. THE/CB is one of the only offenders I can think of. Gatiss really IS blindingly mediocre. His career is beginning to personally offend me the way Chibnall's once did.

LOL THE FUCKING ROSE SYMBOLISM ugh I hate that Bllie Piper's coming back and I can't dismiss these theories as easily as I once could.

What about Tooth and Claw, Fear Her and Gridlock? Although in two of those cases there were INT. TARDIS scenes after the titles anyway. I know what you mean, but I think the type of pre-credits sequence where the Doctor is introduced from another's point-of-view can work nicely, like Silence in the Library.

I enjoyed the episode, perhaps because of participating in live discussion with other fans on the doctorwho comm, but I think my standards for Doctor Who have been lowered by attrition. Creating a connection between the Ice Warrior and Clara because of his daughter and music would have been a really nice idea.
Kali: dw :: team tardis :: OMG YAY_thirty2flavors on April 15th, 2013 12:14 am (UTC)
I guess I don't care what the first scene is as long as we do get that INT TARDIS scene. I think the thing for me is that it sort of orients how the episode is told -- and I'm interested in it from the Doctor and companion's perspective, not so much the random one-offs. For eg this ep would've been helped if we'd had that scene of Clara and the Doctor dressed up and heading to Vegas.

They sort of kind of hinted at the daughter thing by having Clara remember and bring it up, but they could've done a lot more with it I thought. As it was, Clara's singing basically just seemed to mean she was scared, in the middle of a scene where there was no tension because we know the Doctor isn't going to kill them all.

I had it on, but was doing other things and very little made me take notice of what was going on. It was mostly just background noise.

The heck of it is, it's a neat idea - the Cold War, the early 80s, a Soviet sub, etc. But the execution was lacking. A lot.
