BRIAN IS GOSSIP GIRL
THE OFFICE OMG

K SO

ONE OF THE ONLY THINGS I KNOW ABOUT THIS SEASON i’m gonna stop using caps now this might be longwinded

but anyway one of the things i kept hearing about this season is that greg daniels wanted to explore what would’ve happened if jim/pam hadn’t worked out

obviously, i don’t think jim/pam are going to not work out, so this must mean exploring it through other characters

enter s9 and “new jim”, pete, and his thing with erin, the receptionist who’s in a rocky relationship and a boyfriend who neglects her while she has fun with the young guy etc etc

so i figured it was that

BUT NOW I SEE

IT’S NOT PETE/ERIN

IT’S BRIAN/PAM

BRIAN IS CLEARLY IN LOVE WITH PAM WHILE SHE IS WITH SOMEONE ELSE

BUT THIS TIME IT WON’T WORK OUT BECAUSE PAM WON’T LEAVE JIM FOR BRIAN

Which is a fucking tragedy because it would be the most TROLLTASTIC ENDING IN THE ENTIRE UNIVERSE if Pam left her nightmare clown house to go live with Brian the Boom Guy in Colorado next to Michael and Holly, and then she and Michael spend every morning drinking coffee ON HER TERRACE!!!

Like, I loved Jim and Pam back in the day but if this actually happened I would die a million times.

I'm so shocked and pleasantly surprised that this show managed to legitimately shock me like that in its home stretch. Seeing Brian last week was a lot, but the whole Brian/Pam/Jim thing they're pulling out is pretty interesting. HOW WILL IT ALL PLAY OUT I AM ON THE EDGE OF MY SEAT

THE. WHOLE. TIME.

PETE YOU CRAFTY FUCKING LITTLE DECOY I AM STILL NOT FORMING COHERENT SENTENCE I AM JUST LIKE "THE WHOLE TIME. BOOZE CRUISE. ALL OF THE THINGS."

lol @ the idiots who think pam/gossip girl will actually happen, tho

LET ME EXPLAIN

NO THERE IS TOO MUCH

LET ME SUM UP

lol kelly this is season 9 so ????????????????????

but uh on the jim/pam front as i'm sure you know when the show started pam was engaged to someone named roy but he didn't treat her good and clearly her and jim were otp, and it took until the end of s3 for pam to break it off with roy and jim to stop dating rebound ann perkins and for them to finally get a date (the finale of s3 ends with him finally asking her on a date)

then they got married and had babies and for like 3 years they had no plotlines because greg daniels was writing P&R

anyway in this final season, jim and some friends made a start-up company in philly and so jim's been working part time in philly while pam's home with the kids. it put stress on their marraige obviously because jim's stressed about the start-up and he's not around to help out, and pam's trying to keep everything going at home so jim can focus on work but it's stressful being a mom who works full time and takes care of 2 kids on her own

SO ANYWAY then last episode they had this argument (vid won't embed but it's like 3 minutes long)

as you can see at the end pam talks to someone off-screen named "brian", who turns out to be the boom mic. it's the first time we've ever seen a solid glimpse of the doc crew and DEFINITELY the first time we've had someone call them by name and outwardly acknowledge that they're real people and not magical floating cameras

then in this week's ep:
-pam apologizes to brian for getting him in trouble by talking to him; he's not meant to talk to the "subjects", but he says it's no big deal and he hopes she and jim are okay
-later that ep we get this voiceover
-second ep (there were two this week), pam does a talking head and complains (light-heartedly) about how she's alone dealing with the Conflict of the Week, and the boom mic bops her on the head and she laughs and says "okay, well, not ALONE, brian" or something like that
-Conflict of the Week is that one of Pam's murals in the warehouse was vandalized; they find who did it and to get back pam vandalizes his truck with um... just like washable paint or w/e it'll rinse away with water
-so she's talking to the camera about how she feels good about getting vengeance, when the guy who vandalized it comes out of the warehouse and starts yelling at her FURIOUSLY and runs towards her, like, violently
-...and then he gets hit in the face with the boom mic and brian jumps in with some of the other crew and they hold off this guy
-we get a last convo between pam and brian as he cleans out a locker in a room we've never seen before; we learn that he was fired for what happened and pam apologizes but he says it was worth it or whatever, then is all "if you ever need anything you can call me" and he walks away while pam looks stricken DUN DUN DUNNNNNN

now you're all caught up wow

brian is pretty cute go find yourself a nice notpam brian

i am excited to see it play out though, it's an interesting layer to add to the show. we're also due to see the documentary start airing before the show ends and see how that influences the people on it and everything which i'm curious about too

basically yayyyyyy catherine tate getting me to stick with this show i guess, this final season's been pretty good

i feel like kronk. OH YEAH, IT'S ALL COMING TOGETHER.

lol thank you for this because I've watched maybe 4 episodes in the past 4 years and two of them have been these two and I was like, "Er, did we know the crew before? Is this a first? AM I WITNESSING HISTORY RIGHT NOW?!"

Good to know!
Kali: to :: hooked up with her on february 13_thirty2flavors on February 1st, 2013 04:50 pm (UTC)
YOU WERE INDEED WITNESSING HISTORY

well I guess actually last week's ep would've been more historic because it was the first we saw of Brian, but this week's episodes kept it up

Ooh, thanks for the update! I haven't watched in a few years, but this is VERY interesting! I used to be a huge Jim/Pam shipper. I still remember how excited I was for Casino Night,

IT’S BRIAN/PAM

HUH. That makes sense. I have no doubt it won't go in the Brian/Pam direction, but I just hope they're able to resolve it well.
Kali: dw :: ten :: aloha_thirty2flavors on February 1st, 2013 06:47 am (UTC)
Yeah I was worried, when I thought it was Erin/Pete, that it'd just be this bleak ending where Erin is trapped in some kind of loveless relationship and I was like "???????????". I mean, I'm still not sure where they're going with Erin/Pete/Andy lol,

but the idea that it's actually Brian who is like, THE OTHER SECRET JIM falling in love with Pam at work all these years but never being able to do anything because of work and because of JIm and because Jim/Pam WAS work etc is really interesting. Greg Daniels had a couple itneresting things to say about it too, IDK where the quotes are from. But he was talking about how, you know, Jim/Pam is based on this bond formed by all these years of shared jokes and bonding experiences at work etc... and now you realize that actually there's been other people (specifically Brian as a stand-in) who is part of all those as well, in some way. I don't know how they'll resolve it in the end, but I'm very curious and I think I do have faith that it will be well done.

I'm sorry, I saw the reference to Gossip Girl and did a double-take.

That is all.

Since I don't watch The Office.

BASICALLY. DID NOT SEE THAT COMING. I kiiiiinda wish they'd introduced it sooner--like, Brian defending her from Frank was shocking and kinda totally awesome, but remember, say, "Stress Relief"? When Dwight set fire to the office and everyone freaked the fuck out? Where were the camera guys then? I guess I have to conclude that in the past they've just sort of sat back and laughed in a schadenfreude sort of way and just laughed at these crazy-ass people getting themselves into ridiculous situations, but now they're realizing they're starting to actually care about these people they've been watching--or at least Brian is about Pam. So, y'know. It's plausible, and the moments between them are sweet. I just wish they'd started that last season or something.

BUT ERIN/PETE IS ADORBS OMG. I'm annoyed they ruined Erin/Andy for no reason, because they used to be qt, but oh well.

I think it makes sense to hold off on Brian until this final home stretch, because Brian's transition from man behind the curtain creator to an actual character IN the creation is the kind of thing you (in my opinion anyway) only want to do when you're finally ready to draw attention to the rest of the people behind the curtain. And since the show is finally winding down, I think it makes sense for them to finally address the issue of the camera crew and why they're still there etc. It's shocking because it breaks an illusion we've all been willingly partaking in for nine years -- if they'd done it earlier but kept the show running I think it would've come across as quite strange, because it's really asking you to question the entire nature of the show and I don't think that's something you can easily do if you want to keep going. Apparently this is a Mindy Kaling idea from circa s3 and they shelved it until now.

Plus I think it's also worth noting that Brian is fired for interfering as much as he does. So we know the doc crew really frowns on that kind of thing, which goes part of the way to explain why they've never interfered in things before.

Erin/Pete is so adorable and I've been like 300% done with Andy/Erin for about three seasons so lol I'm just reveling in the shippers' pain tbh lollll.
