enjoy my wide selection of icons while it lasts
My extra icon packages expire in like 4 days and I dunno if I'm gonna do anything about it. On one hand, icons! All the icons I have spent years collecting and such! On the other hand, I don't post or comment as much as I used to and I also have no income, so.

SPEAKING OF omg so over it u guise. I vacillate between feeling really hopeless and depressed with everything to effectively distracting myself with the internet and Playstation 1 games, which I think means I am more similar to Tom Haverford than I would like to be. The final payment for that wedding I'm supposed to go to is due on Monday and IDK it just sucks. I assumed I'd have SOME KIND of income by now but I do not, and I'm not really sure what to do about it. I want to go to the wedding -- I paid my deposit and it would feel shitty to be the only one who doesn't get to go, etc. On the other hand, I feel really really guilty spending this money when I don't have a job or any job prospects or anything.

The other thing that sucks right now (and which is potentially TMI so turn away now if that frightens you) is that since I'm no longer covered under my parents' insurance plan, I have no prescription drug coverage. I'm pretty lucky in that I only take birth control -- if I had more prescriptions it'd be even worse -- but still, I've been on the pill for various reasons since I was like 14 or whatever and being off it now seems super intimidating. You mean I don't get to choose when I have my period WHAT IS THIS, THE DARK AGES??? I could of course a) just buy it, but it's like $100/month, or b) get health insurance, but then I'm paying a monthly premium plus the left-over cost of whatever isn't covered, and again both of those things are spending money I'm not making. And things like "not having health insurance" makes me feel even guiltier about the idea of spending money on this wedding.

I guess the best thing to do at this point is abandon all hope of making anything above minimum wage or working regular hours and just try to find a job for the upcoming five months or whatever, but even that is easier said than done. I answered like 75 fucking questions just to apply for a seasonal position at a bookstore which I never heard back from so lol.

I didn't mean for this post to be "wah wah I will never amount to anything, version #4.0" but that's basically all that's happening in my life rn so there it is lol. UM. Here have a point-form breakdown of stuff I have seen:

  • The Mindy Project was good this week. The show is definitely getting better and finding its stride. I have never found an episode HILARIOUS, but they're consistently amusing throughout (or have been for the last few episodes) which is good enough for me. I find Mindy quite a likable lead -- I don't particularly relate to her but I find her funny and I think they've struck a pretty decent balance between funny and still clever/believably a medical professional. I would like to watch Dr. Mindy Lahiri interact with Dr. Elliot Reid. Danny and the British guy (lol idek his name) remain so-so, but Morgan is getting funnier and generally I just enjoy the show's vibe. Also, she wrinkled my brain re: "girlcrush" this week and now I may have to remove that from my vocabulary so good job Mindy.
  • The Office's "farewell season" continues to be enjoyable. I know some people are upset with the direction they've taken Andy but I don't curr about Andy so, whatever, and I hate Andy/Erin so Erin/NewJim is a welcome change for me. Oscar/Angela/Senator makes me uncomfortable but I'm reserving judgment until I know where it's heading. Also, they gave me an entire episode with Nellie using an American accent, so, excellent. (S9 Nellie, as far as I can tell, is basically an entirely different person from s7 or s8 Nellie, but she's a real character now so I'll take it.)
  • Doctor Who has a CIN thing airing this Friday that is meant to be the "first glimpse" of the new companion. I'm pretty sure by "glimpse" they mean that most literally, and we'll see about a single gif-worth of frames of her buried in a incoherent trailer of explosions. Also a prequel, which I'm sure will feature Eleven being ~zany as always.
  • Elementary continues to be enjoyable, with interesting characters and white noise crime cases. It sounds like the show is still slaying in ratings, which pleases me. I am cautiously optimistic to meet their Irene, because lbr it's not like she can be worse than the BBC's.
  • P&R exists and is enjoyable but I never have any deep thoughts on it. I don't think I loved this week's ep as much as other people, but what's new when it comes to P&R lol.
  • Argo was a really enjoyable film although it cracked me up to go online after and find out all this stuff about how they tweaked the story to glorify the CIA and downplay the involvement of the Canadian consulate, as well as the British and New Zealand consulates. LOLLLL SHOCKER.
  • Wreck-It Ralph was really good?? I really enjoyed it a lot. I even warmed to Vanellope despite hating Sarah Silverman. And Jane Lynch's character was better than I anticipated. And just... stuff. It may have helped the case that this movie came during a time when I'm inexplicably into video games again, but I loved all the visual gags. And Paperman! So cute.

WAIT I THOUGHT YOUR COUNTRY WAS A SOCIALIST UTOPIA OF HEALTHCARE? wtf $100 for a prescription???

alas there are no jobs for english grads at my company right now. er... DEVELOP YOUR EXCEL SKILLS AND WE'LL HAVE YOU?

lol the DW thing is bound to be thrilling I'm sure. and lol @ Argo. Oh America.

RUMOURS OF CANADA'S SOCIALISM HAVE BEEN GREATLY EXAGGERATED

lol my excel skills are pretty lacking in general and limited to basic functions so I thikn this would be quite a lot of work.

IKR all the prequels are just so thrilling! And lol Argo was very typical in that sense, even if I enjoyed it a lot as a movie.

"effectively distracting myself with the internet and Playstation 1 games"
Hahaha our ways of dealing with the soul-crushing ways of unemployment are so similar. I've been playing Final Fantasy 8 and I've just entered a competition to write the script for a fan production of Doctor Who. It was Diwali yesterday and lol relatives calling in and asking me if I've found anything.
Thanks for the heads-up for the CIN thing.

LOL I spent the last couple days finishing most of Spyro 3, then finishing Spyro 2 more thoroughly than ever before, and now I am at a loss because the copy of Spyro 1 I got didn't work so I had to return it and the replacement will probably be a couple weeks.

Omg relatives asking questions are the worst, my sympathies.

I remember those days of job-hunting and they suck. You will find something eventually. Just hang in there.

You already know all my Office FEELS. I still can't believe how pleasantly surprised I am by this season.

So, Wreck-It Ralph is worth seeing? Because I'm on vacation this week, and I really feel like going to the movies, but there's nothing playing that I care about.
Kali: dis :: you deliberately disobeyed me_thirty2flavors on November 15th, 2012 02:41 am (UTC)
Thanks bb.

IKR?? I am delighted that the show is going out on a decent note. It's not my favourite anymore but once upon a time it was the show that got me watching TV so I'm happy for it to have a good swan song. AND I appreciate its efforts to put Catherine Tate on my screen every week.

I would say Wreck-It Ralph is definitely worth seeing. It's a very cute film, it has a lot of nice visual gags -- it's not laugh-out-loud funny in many parts but it's enjoyable and it has a lot of really nice nods and cameos to various video games. The animation is STUNNING -- it was a lot of fun just to look at because all the animation was so nicely done. And the lead characters are all likable, and of the four main characters two are women and I'd say they get about as much screentime/etc as their male counterparts. It even passes the Bechdel test! Zany.

Plus, the short that goes before it, Paperman, is ADORABLE.

Sorry your job search is proving so frustrating...:( What kinds of jobs were you looking in, again? And that sucks about the health care too--I admit I had to just Wikipedia it, but so in Canada healthcare is universal coverage/basically single payer, but not prescriptions unless you are old? :s Bummer...

I loved Argo! It was one of those rare movies that actually lived up to all the hype, IMO. That is a shame though about the changes--maybe they were bitter too at having to hide the CIA's involvement for so long while Canada took all the credit, lol.

I am not watching Elementary, but I derive pleasure at how well it is doing and how good everyone says it is, flying in the face of all the hating! ;)

And ooh I didn't realize there was a new TMP--my TV guide said it was a repeat...:/ I have trouble keeping up when they alternate between new and repeat episodes from week to week...

lol I'm applying to pretty much anything -- most of it is receptionist/admin type stuff but I've also applied to like, random retail positions and stuff. I think that's part of what makes it really frustrating -- I'm not really ~*waiting for the perfect job*~ or even looking in a particular field. So it's like "omg I can't even get a basic job how am I supposed to ever have a career?"

Yeah it seems like prescriptions and dental are two of the things you need insurance for. I think it varies province to province and some things will be covered in one province that aren't covered in another province.

Argo was funny because I'm so out of the movie loop these days that literally all I knew amounted to "people really liked it" and "based on a true story". Once it started of course it sort of scratched my knowledge of the history, but even that boiled down to like "one time Canada helped smuggle Americans to safety" and didn't include the actual, um, "Argo" bit or anything. LOL. But yeah. I didn't know enough about the history while watching the movie to say for sure, but I did get the sense that... well I mean OBVIOUSLY some things were staged (lol dramatic car chase after an airplane, okay), but I did also feel like the CIA was being particularly glorified lol so I wasn't surprised to learn that this was a common complaint with Canadians.

lmao IKR??? Twelve seasons and a movie and a themepark, tbh.

Yeah Mindy Project keeps getting shafted because of presidential debates, hurricanes and elections, lol. But it was new this week. I dunno about next week.

I totally renewed my extra icons, but then again I have a full-time job so I'm just going to treat myself to useless 100x100 squares. I'm sorry, internet, I know Livejournal isn't the thing anymore but how am I supposed to represent all of the things I love with just fifteen slots?

Ugh prescription costs. I've been on the Pill since I was, like, seventeen and it was such a huge bummer when I stopped being on my parents' health plan. That shit's expensive, and unfortunately since my job is a contract I don't have any insurance through work (but man I covet a permanent job so badly if only for the vacation and the health insurance).

I worked the 5 am shelving shift at the bookstore for a year with my fancypants master's degree so, you know, you gotta do what you gotta do (and that was after being turned down by other retail places. The post-grad life is the worst place to be employment-wise because you don't have the experience for a Big Girl job, but retailers know you aren't a lifer and think you're too overqualified to hire you. I FEEL LIKE LIFE AND OUR PARENTS AND EVERYONE LIED TO US).

Re: Elementary, it feels so weird to be watching and loving a smash hit show on CBS. What are these feelings, so sudden and new.

I found Wreck-it Ralph to be super adorable, and I'm not a big fan of Silverman either. But the friendship stuff was precious.
Kali: c&h :: i love television_thirty2flavors on November 15th, 2012 05:42 pm (UTC)
Lol ikr? What happens about that one time a year I need to talk about Calvin & Hobbes? WHAT THEN, LJ? I don't know how long I'll last tbh, probably not very long.

Yeah it's unfortunate. And I'm pretty lucky in that I don't have any other prescriptions to fill. Ugh.

The post-grad life is the worst place to be employment-wise because you don't have the experience for a Big Girl job, but retailers know you aren't a lifer and think you're too overqualified to hire you. I FEEL LIKE LIFE AND OUR PARENTS AND EVERYONE LIED TO US)

Yeah, this is where I am now. Lol like applying for this seasonal position at Chapters it was like, "omg I have retail experience I have an English degree JUST HIRE MEEEEEE" but maybe I answered one of their 75 inane questions less-than-ideally. I think that's the other thing that really kills job hunting for me lol, apparently I value honesty because it is really hard for me to lie in order to sell myself, but obviously that's what I need to do if I need to check "FRIENDLIEST PERSON WHO EVER LIVED" instead of "friendlier than average" in your stupid screening questionnaire. What really baffles me is how anyone ever makes the transition from "retail job to pay the bills" to "career-type thing".

IKR I think Elementary gets more viewers than anything I've ever watched lmao. I mean even The Office at its height was getting what, 8, 9 mil? Elementary gets like 11m and it's on its eighth episode.

It was! And then I was really ashamed to see that I hadn't recognized Mindy Kaling's voice until I saw her name in the credits. I'm a bad fan, lol.
obstinate, headstrong girl!: dead like me | george lasszombie_boogie on December 1st, 2012 05:06 pm (UTC)
The only reason I'm not currently working at Chapters is because I got into a temp agency, and that seems like a total fluke because I've applied tons of times before and never heard a single word back! But once you're in a temp agency it's fairly steady, if not life-affirming/altering/uplifting employment. I can't remember if you're in the Toronto area? If you are in the GTA I could give you the name of an actual person at my temp agency to forward your resume to.

Your thoughts on DW are my own.

And what's this about New Zealand's consulate?
Kali: dw :: oswin :: the girl who can_thirty2flavors on November 15th, 2012 05:46 pm (UTC)
I just want Clara. I don't even know why since I'm sure she'll be like every other Moffat lady in the long-term and leave me cold, but still. I'm so done with Eleven. lol

In the movie Argo, which is based on a true story about six US diplomats escaping Iran, they mention that the six had been turned away by both the British and New Zealand consulates before they ended up hiding at the Canadian consulate. None of that's true -- they were originally harboured by the Brits but it was deemed unsafe, so they moved them to the Canadian consulate, and actually the NZ consulate was super helpful and even drove them to the airport on the day of their big escape. I enjoyed the movie, but it was definitely RAH RAH USA USA and didn't do much to acknowledge the contributions of Canada, let alone Britain or NZ.
Rosa | ¯\(ºдಠ)/¯rosaxx50 on November 15th, 2012 09:52 pm (UTC)
Because hope runs eternal and you're wired to hopefully love companions?

On the bright side, Neil Gaiman will be back with a new episode, right?

Lolol, oh America *facepalm*. How hard could it have been to have said they were nearly caught at the NZ/British consulate, instead? THEN THEY WOULD STILL BE AS TRAPPED AS BEFORE, while still being able to write in British and NZ and Canadian help later on the movie.

Though tbh, it's would only really annoy me if the myth that they were ~turned away~ and that Canada's diplomats had no involvement went into popular history.

Sorry about your continuing job woes. Being unemployed really sucks. Does your university have a job counseling center or anything like that? I'm sure you've already thought of all that though.

I'm no longer covered under my parents' insurance plan
Is there Planned Parenthood in Canada? I'm not sure if sexual health focused clinics in your country operate in the same way, but in the US usually all of those type clinics offers the pill on a sliding scale. You might have to switch brands, but if you explain you have no income you can definitely get it cheaper.

I need to catch up on Mindy Project. I'm supposed to watch it with my friend, but we haven't met up in a few weeks and apparently her DVR box broke and erased all the saved episodes, so maybe I should just actually start watching it on TV, now that I actually have an antenna and can get standard channels.

I am cautiously optimistic to meet their Irene, because lbr it's not like she can be worse than the BBC's.
I'm sort of in the same place, but it's sort of like I can't imagine them actually doing Irene the way I'd want her to be done, but it's comforting to know that it's pretty much impossible they'd screw it up as badly as BBC. And since they have consciously tried to be different from them, it's highly doubtful that Irene will be a man loving lesbian, sex worker wearing sexy clothes for the camera, or helpless and rescued by Sherlock. I'm also holding out high hopes that she faked her death, and will just laugh at Sherlock's pain.

Ugh! I feel your pain. Seriously. I'm in the UK right now but since I haven't been able to really work much in Canada before coming here (I got 4 sub days between Sept and the end of Oct.) so now I'm here and basically everything I had saved went to transit and that's like it. So yeah, fun times. As for the wedding, idk. How close a friend is it? Is it the kind of thing you'll regret missing down the road b/c if so then it might be worth it. Also can you maybe get an extension for when it must be paid by? seems a waste not to go if you've already paid some and you can't get your money back. (Where is this wedding that it costs you so much to go/)

Ugh Canada's lack of prescription coverage. *sigh* I hope you're able to find something soon to at least help you out a bit.
Kali: dw :: ten :: aloha_thirty2flavors on November 21st, 2012 07:24 pm (UTC)
Yeah I've heard it's especially brutal for teachers. I have friends doing teacher's college and I think they're going to have a really difficult time breaking into the field.

The wedding is two of my best friends, so I would like to be there. And they are doing a destination wedding in the Caribbean, which is why it's super expensive. I've hmmed and hawed over it for a long time and then when the deposit was due in August I decided just to go. But in August I also thought I'd have a job by November, which... lol. I ended up making the rest of the payment so I guess I'm committed now. All my other close friends are going as well, so I do think I'd probably regret it if I didn't. But that will not stop me from bitching and moaning because I think it's pretty selfish to ask your guests to pay that much to see you tie the knot. Especially when you still have a bridal shower, stag & doe, etc.

Via Frances I ended up finding out about some city-run sexual health clinic that will give me a prescription for quite cheap, which is great. So that's taken care of for now. It made me laugh to imagine my contraception fees being covered by ~precious taxpayer dollars~ so hahahahaha.
