7x02 Dinosaurs on a Spaceship

  1. god Chibnall’s episodes are always just so boring even when I’m not offended I’m just bored he is the worst of both worlds
  2. the dinosaurs looked cool
  3. I liked Amy in this episode although I have yet to sort out how I feel about her arc. I guess we’ll see where it goes. On one hand the idea of her being like “I can’t stop waiting” is like, smh, but on the other hand at least the show actually acknowledged it and how much it would fuck you up if you can’t even live a normal life because you might be teleported to fight dinosaurs at any time. We’ll see how it plays out though. I didn’t like how defensive the Doctor got at ARE YOU SAYING IT’S MY FAULT um well it sure is douchebag
  4. so Nefertiti was there primarily to be literally a sex object kidnapped for the purposes of being a sex object O K
  5. and then he left her in the early 20th century…? um… k… is that meant to be her “disappearance” from history or…
  6. Rory and his dad were cute a couple times I guess, mostly I wasn’t that interested in it though, sorry Rory. it was cute I guess that his dad started travelling and stuff after. does Rory not have a mom? he’s mentioned her but i guess his parents are divorced? w/e
  7. The Mitchell + Webb robots were terrible, in the words of the Time Lord Victorious, I hate funny robots
  8. I dunno how I feel about exploding Filch. On one hand, creepy rapist human trafficking, so, my sympathy is limited. On the other hand, I don’t know how I feel about the Doctor killing him so coldly — it’s a change at any rate from Ten not being able to kill the guy who’d just shot his daughter.
  9. Why does Chibnall get work, though, is my main question

So in sum, pretty boring, nothing special, nothing terrible. The Nefertiti stuff was mostly gross to me, but sadly it's becoming par for the course so whatever.

The resurgence of wank over whether or not the Doctor killing someone is kosher is already tiring me. Mostly because it usually comes with a hearty reprise of TEN WASN'T A ~REAL DOCTOR ALL THE OTHERS WERE VIOLENT OKAY IT'S TOTALLY IN CHARACTER YOU'RE JUST WATCHING THE SHOW WRONG. Which, lol w/e I'm over it. But at the same time I can't get worked up because it's like, of all the shady stuff Eleven has done recently, letting this human trafficker explode is low down on the list. Also I have resigned myself to the fact that Eleven sucks and I don't care about Eleven and I will never care about Eleven, so I don't even care.

I was so confused as to why the Doctor even brought these random two people along at all. it was so random I CAN'T!

LOL Nefertiti in this ep... -.-

NGL I was wondering about Rory's mom, too. Also, has everyone forgot about amy and rory's wedding reception??

I legit LOLed when Eleven reprimanded Filch for genocide and then proceded to kill a man begging for mercy. W/E Doctor. I don't get your ~emotional arc~ whatever it is.
Kali_thirty2flavors on September 9th, 2012 04:25 pm (UTC)
lol well I got the impression Nefertiti just invited herself along and the Doctor was POWERLESS, POWERLESS I SAY. The opening scene with her squicks me so bad. If you want Eleven to be the kind of Doctor whose mystical allure brings all the ladies to the yard, maybe don't style him like a stodgy professor and then make him act like a five year old. It's hard for me to imagine not one but SEVERAL of history's most famed beautiful and/or powerful women literally throwing themselves at this guy who probably can't even say "penis" out loud without giggling. You can tell it's written by a man tbh.

ANYWAY yes and then beyond that she was kind of dumb. Some of her lines were fine but the idea of her and Riddell's bickering being "flirting" and UST when it was basically "sexist remark" / "stop being sexist" was pretty gross. Oh Chibnall. U never disappoint.

I'm so over Eleven, like -- I don't even care. He's an asshole. I don't like him. He can't regenerate soon enough for my tastes. That's basically all there is to say about that, really.

oh god when Ridell (or whatever his name is, can't be bothered to look it up) said they really ~bred firecrackers~ in your time UGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHH D:

It's like Chibnall has his own personal mission to take fun and exciting things like dinosaurs and make them boring as fuck.

Ugh, I forgot about those robots. They were so bad. It got to the point where I was yelling at my computer because JUST SHUT UP ALREADY YOU ANNOYING ROBOTS.

I agree about Nefertiti in this episode. At best she was just kind of pointless (which can be said about almost everyone. Well done, Chibnall), but for the most part she was just a sex object and that really squicked me out.

lol ifkr? HIs upcoming ep sounds interesting -- it spans a year and stuff and SUPPOSEDLY is told "through the perspective of the Ponds" (but, y'know, so was "Pond Life" so...) but it's Chibnall so, it won't be.

THE ROBOTS WERE TERRIBLE and them being a cameo from some British comedy duo I know of only in name didn't help me.

Yeah they tried to give us the illusion that she had "power" by having her choose to sacrifice herself for the greater good, but since she was choosing to be basically pulled into a human (sex?) trafficking ring it was like .........great. And I liked that she kicked the thing out from underneath him and whatnot but she could've done that sooner? LIke I dunno it felt too "look she can do stuff I guess!" for me. AND THEN SHE HAS SEX WITH THE GUY WHO'S BEEN MAKING GROSS SEXIST REMARKS AT HER ALL EPISODE ugh.
Austinjohnmayergirl23 on September 9th, 2012 03:09 am (UTC)
I surprisingly really enjoyed this episode? There was a lot of gross shit, but I really liked Amy and Rory, which hasn't happened in a long time. It was lulzy and only vaguely gross, which is apparently a win these days

I did really like Amy for the first time in a long time. So that was nice. And at least this episode actually passed the Bechdel Test.
Opalshinyopals on September 9th, 2012 10:33 am (UTC)
Lol v true, this is the mildest douchey thing Eleven has done recently.

And ugh at the Nefertiti stuff. I liked her and most of what she said and did but WHY DO WE HAVE TO GO THERE? Like, it would never be a bloke being treated that way.
Kali: dw :: smith & jones :: freelance_thirty2flavors on September 9th, 2012 04:34 pm (UTC)
Compared to letting an innocent friendly Dalek explode, killing this guy isn't really THAT unbelievable to me, I guess. But I'm also really really over people telling me about how Four snapped a neck in the 1970s and that makes it okay for the Doctor to behave the same way now.

Nope! Actually, when Filch first started going OOO THERE'S AN AWESOME OBJECT ON THIS SHIP i thought he meant the TARDIS. Which would make more sense IMO in the first place. And why didn't his thingy recognize Time Lords? That doesn't make sense. Is it to do with the "fixed point" death BS? BECAUSE THAT ALSO DOESN'T MAKE SENSE. MOTHERFUCKING TIME TRAVEL. Ugh.
fauxkarenfauxkaren on September 10th, 2012 01:05 am (UTC)
I THOUGHT IT WAS THE TARDIS TOO.

And idk. I guess the fact that the Doctor faked his death and the Daleks don't know who he is means that no one recognizes the Doctor any more????
alephlacunaz on September 9th, 2012 03:05 pm (UTC)
This was probably the best Chibnall episode. Which means basically nothing.

Amy was really the best part of the episode, which was interesting because usually I find she's not really given anything interesting to do. But she was all over the computer solving the problem of the missing Silurians and helping fend off the dinosaurs.

Although I got kinda sad when Rory mentioned he was 31 -- Amy's been waiting around for the Doctor for 20 years of her life. She's not settling down properly and we already know the Ponds are going to have a sad end -- way to ruin her life, Doctor.

I get that Doctor Who is an old boys club, but surely they can find some other old white dude to write an episode instead of giving him two. At least Toby Whithouse and Tom MacRae are coming back -- The Girl Who Waited was one of the shining moments of s6, so I have hopes for that.
Kali: dw :: amy :: i've got your back_thirty2flavors on September 9th, 2012 05:02 pm (UTC)
lol ikr. I spent most of it waiting for it to get really terrible and that never happened. It just maintained is baseline of badness the whole way through without any major spikes. So... okay.

Yeah and her lines were funny and not irritatingly ...funny? Like last time he wrote Amy in s5 it was all YOU'RE SOOOOOO CLINGY and I DRESSED FOR RIO!!!!!! and it was so annoying, lol. But I liked her here. I guess Karen also has probably improved a lot as an actress so that could be part of it -- I think some of her lines might've been obnoxious if delivered differently, like "I'm easily worth two men", but Karen delivered them in a way that made them seem funny and genuine. I liked Amy calling out Riddell on his shit the whole episode, even if the "lessons in gender politics" line was like... so hilariously un-self-aware.

AND IKR? I almost wish Mark Gatiss had written the next ep instead of Whithouse so we could just, like, get all the Oblig Boring White Guys out of the way in time for Clara.
Lizbazcat89 on September 9th, 2012 03:08 pm (UTC)
Okay but seriously, show, I know you are about time travel and that you are written by lazyass bros, but nobody "disappears" from history; they disappear from the historical record. And considering how much everyone hated Nerfititi and Akhenaton it's not exactly surprising. Also, so offense, but Hatshepsut was fiercer; guess she wasn't ~sexual~ enough for these clowns.

Lol non-RTD "historical" episodes make me twitch. Even when I don't watch them.
alephlacunaz on September 9th, 2012 04:55 pm (UTC)
For some reason Nefertiti referred to him as Amenhotep. I was genuinely baffled by this.

lol a+ non-wikipedia usage, writing staff
Kali: dw :: ten/rose :: great wide somewhere_thirty2flavors on September 9th, 2012 05:04 pm (UTC)
They didn't even really... like... establish it. Like, there was no point when anyone mentioned "well Nefertiti DID ~~~disappear~~~ from history so that is clearly why it's okay for her to suddenly go live in the 20th century". It just kind of happened. And you had to piece it together from Wikipedia or w/e lol.

But yes it was dumb and I don't know much about Egypt but I am sure it was historically inaccurate in a whole host of ways. Including saying the wrong husband's name, lmao.
Lizbazcat89 on September 11th, 2012 10:17 pm (UTC)
the husband's name is particularly wtf
like jesus they could at least use wikipedia and PRETEND to give a fuck

. Also, so offense, but Hatshepsut was fiercer; guess she wasn't ~sexual~ enough for these clowns.

Yeah, I get the feeling that Nefertiti was chosen to be in this episode because she is primarily known by most people for being beautiful. Which.... ok.

I haven't worked up the motivation to watch. Which is sad, considering how EXCITED Doctor Who used to make me! But if I'm not angry, I'm bored, and if I'm not either of those things I'm ignoring everything that's bothering me. Like "Ok, let's just focus on the pretty and ignore the huge plot holes and annoyances!"

By the way, I don't remember if you have a tumblr or not (I just got back into it: http://ladysophiekitty.tumblr.com/) but since I've definitely seen you post about it, I was wondering if I could have the link?

Eh, Ten was pretty ruthless. See: Family of Blood. Even before that, his very first appearance where he's all "no second chances" and just plain kills that alien leader guy.

So yeah, I didn't see it as OOC at all.
Kali: misfits :: rubbish superheroes_thirty2flavors on September 10th, 2012 03:23 pm (UTC)
It made me raise my eyebrows, but like I said I don't think it's the most egregious thing Eleven's done. Stuff like not even attempting to consider maybe saving Oswin despite her CLEARLY retaining her humanity, or brainwashing all of humanity to commit genocide forever, irritate me way more. However in wake of all that stuff Eleven does all the time, him killing Solomon does grate on me because I don't think -- unlike in TCI or FOB, or Nine with Cassandra -- this is meant to really tell us anything about who the Doctor is, or play into any kind of development or anything.

Like, people talk about Eleven's "dark side", but I'm pretty sure the show is now completely oblivious to the fact that its main character does a lot of questionable, shitty stuff all the time. We got some lip service in AGMGTW but that's about it. So when people defend questionable stuff he does with "well it's part of his arc!" I'm always skeptical. He hasn't had a discernible arc in the last two years, I am doubtful that will change now.

Katherine: TARDISspicandspan89 on September 10th, 2012 10:37 pm (UTC)
This ep was pretty much a mixed bag, yeah. Kind of sloppy and uneven, but less boring than I had feared. The shitty plot was saved by the acting from the guest characters. I did like the concept of the Silurian Ark.

Also, Nerfertiti's subplot was skeevy. I suppose it would have been cliche for the Object of Great Power and Uniqueness to be the TARDIS, but Nefertiti selling herself into slavery? Srsly?
Kali_thirty2flavors on September 11th, 2012 06:14 pm (UTC)

Should've been the TARDIS or even the Doctor -- I don't know why he registered as "nothing" on Filch's scanner, I can only assume Filch's scanner blows. But the Doctor offering himself up and his "gang" coming to his rescue would've been a lot more interesting than "we introduced a famous historical women to use her as a literal object".

Agreed. Literal objectifying, hooray! At least it was framed as a bad thing. (Small victories, yo.)

Putting this here instead of my own post because tbh I no longer care enough to argue about it but... getting kind of over all the women demonstrating their independence via being ~~~~sexay and flirtatious (and apparently completely non-discretionary about who/what they will flirt with). Please find some other way of signalling "independent woman here" that does not entirely revolve around their sexuality, white dudes. It's getting boring and is a really unflattering insight into your fantasies.

Also, did I read on the internets today that Moffat ragequit Twitter? Could it be? Where will I get my schadenfreude now?
Kali_thirty2flavors on September 11th, 2012 05:50 pm (UTC)
Yeah I'm over it as well. Also I can't @ these powerful, beautiful historical women throwing themselves at Eleven, specifically. I'd be rolling my eyes if it was Ten as well but at least Ten isn't characterized like an overgrown 5-year-old. Like, what about Eleven am I supposed to believe exudes such sexuality that Marilyn Monroe, Mata Hari and Nefertiti are going TAKE ME NOW!!!!! ???

He sure did. A couple days ago the DW tag was HILARIOUS because it turned into LOOK! LOOK WHAT YOU DID CRITICIZING HIS WRITING!!! YOU DID THIS!!! BEING CALLED SEXIST IS JUST AS BAD AS BEING A VICTIM OF SEXISM!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Then Martin Freeman's partner got involved and it turned into a hot mess.
demented & sad, but socialpapilio_luna on September 11th, 2012 05:56 pm (UTC)
I think my interpretation of all these women throwing themselves at Eleven is perhaps backwards from intended because my take-home message is "These ladies are so hypersexual, they will flirt with anything, even this guy." It is only just now occurring to me that maybe I was supposed to be believing that Eleven is such hot stuff that it's entirely due to his animal magnetism.

LOL. LOOOOOOOOL. Okay. Immature, unattractive white dudes present immature, unattractive white dude as being irresistible to women. I c wut u did thar.

Ugh Twitter. This is why it's always 100% a bad idea for creatives to interact with fans on Twitter. I mean, not like I'm crying tears for poor widdle Steven Moffat but I don't understand why anyone ever thinks that going that route is a good idea. It always ends in tears.

"These ladies are so hypersexual, they will flirt with anything, even this guy."

LOL LOL LOL. I mean I see where you'd get that from but no I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be DAMN THE DOCTOR IS JUST SO ATTRACTIVE BECAUSE OF HIS BRAIN AND STUFF WOMEN LOVE BRAINS I GUESS. It's so transparently "written by dudes" too because like lol -- with due respect to Matt Smith and his face, his character is styled like a stodgy professor and behaves like a "cosmic five year old". I don't believe Eleven could say the word "penis" out loud. He is pretty much written and played to be as un-sexy as possible. BUT IT BRINGS ALL THE LADIES TO THE YARD.

Yeah IA, Twitter brings nothing but pain and I am forever pleased no one I care about all that much has one. There's wank as well because I guess some people were mean to Caitlin Blackwood on Twitter, which on one hand is "really guys? she's twelve" but on the other hand is like "well it's Twitter so I don't know what I expected".

(Visiting her Twitter, however, led me to discover that someone asked who her favourite Doctor is and she said David Tennant. HahahahAHAhah I knew I liked you Amelia.)

What is this about Freeman's partner?
Kali_thirty2flavors on September 11th, 2012 11:00 pm (UTC)
Her name is Amanda Abbington. She made a tweet about how the people who had "cussed out" Moffat were "twats" or something, and then she started getting into arguments with people about how she's all for criticism but there's criticism and then there's hate, etc etc, and then she made a big Twitlonger thing today about it all. I guess she got death threats.

So as usual the collective age of the internet is around 10.

These. So much. I was left scratching my head after the episode By which I mean that Nefertiti herself was great, the role she was being written into was terrible.

The triceratops was very cute though and Amy was great, but those are about the only good things.
