my home and native land

Happy Canada Day!

Yesterday I met up with sweetcherrytree and showed her the exciting sights of Ottawa on Canada Day weekend at 10 at night. Thrilling! Today ...I am... ??? I dunno but I am sure it will be very festive. I hope my fellow Canadians have a nice July 1, full of poutine and butter tarts and sappy Tim Hortons commercials.

In other news I now have an anon stalking my Tumblr to preach about Classic Who, so I guess I've finally "made it".

I got to see some of the dress rehearsal for the concert on Friday! Which was much better than the actual concert tbh because there was no crowd.

lol @ that image. Hello breasts of Pamela Anderson.

I feel that image nicely sums up Canada.

RYAN AND COLIN. I MISS THEM.

You have an anon stalking you? What are they saying??
Kali: act :: dten :: i can't do it!_thirty2flavors on July 2nd, 2012 04:40 pm (UTC)
lol the usual smug, obnoxious Classic Who stan stuff! Oh Classic Who is a smarter show, it took you seriously as an audience, New Who is intellectual cotton candy, RTD was the single worst thing to happen to Doctor Who including cancellation, Moffat and Eleven are better because Moffat actually ~*knows*~ the show he's producing, etc etc.

But like, lol, this was spread out over days, so obviously they either follow me (WHY?) OR they intentionally check back at my blog to ask me questions/comment on stuff I've said. Like I did a "give me 5 actors and I'll rate them in order of preference" meme, and this person gave me Lalla Ward, Colin Baker, Tom Baker, Brian Blessed and Matthew Waterhouse. lmao. Like, really?

EW. I would expect that behavior from a teen, but if it's a Classic Who fan, they're probably older. Like, old enough to realize that you have to just agree to disagree. GET A LIFE, anon.

lmao I K R? LIKE LOL YOU ARE ACTIVELY STALKING MY BLOG JUST TO BITCH ABOUT HOW YOU HATE THE ONLY ERA OF DW I PARTICULARLY LIKE? LOOK AT YOUR LIFE, LOOK AT YOUR CHOICES.

Waaiit. What's your tumblr? I figured it was thirty2flavors but there are no posts there.

Happy Canada Day! I'm going to be in Toronto later this month, so I'm quite psyched for that.
Kali: act :: are you disrespecting me?_thirty2flavors on July 2nd, 2012 04:46 pm (UTC)
Haha nope. I am cloaked in secrecy.

Toronto! Haha I haven't been to Toronto in yeeeeeeears. We have quite a rivalry with Toronto if I'm honest.

Haha. I've heard there's some Canadian rivalry going on. What province are you in?
I don't think we really have that in the states. Texas likes to think they're the best, but I don't think anyone cares, so it doesn't really matter.

And I've seen your tumblr! Due to Shinyopals and MRV, I think. I almost followed it, but my phone doesn't really register the follow button very well, so I decided to try later and forgot. Fixed now. ^_^
Kali: misc :: my home and native land_thirty2flavors on July 2nd, 2012 05:05 pm (UTC)
LOL OH CANADA, don't let our international reputation fool you. Canada has rivalries with itself all over the place. The only reason Canada is really a country is because we hated each other marginally less than we hated the idea of being American.

I'm in Ottawa, which is the nation's capital and is also in Ontario. Ottawa and Toronto have big rivalries I guess because we're the national capital and they're the provincial capital, but they're also a larger city so a) foreigners think they're the national capital, and b) they have a bigger population and everything that goes with it (concerts, etc). Also, we both have NHL hockey teams and for a few years we always met in the playoffs, so there's a big rivalry between the teams as well.
doctahrdoctahr on July 2nd, 2012 04:59 pm (UTC)
No, I know where I saw you! You reblogged my Doctor Who Bechdel Test thing.
I've been creeping all the reblogs to that post as I like to read people's responses.
Kali: dw :: eleven :: way worse than scottish_thirty2flavors on July 2nd, 2012 05:10 pm (UTC)
lol I WAS JUST looking at the responses to that actually. I was surprised that so far there was only one person arguing in favour of Moffat.
doctahrdoctahr on July 2nd, 2012 05:13 pm (UTC)
I know! And I actually reblogged them to tell them where they were wrong and they sent me a friendly ask telling me they agreed with my rebuttal. I expected more arguing on their end tbh.

ORLY

I am impressed.

Once they ended it with "MOFFAT IS NOT SEXIST" in italics I figured all hope was lost.
doctahr: Ten/Rose OuOdoctahr on July 13th, 2012 04:22 pm (UTC)
So.. If one was going to be in Canada longer than previously planned and decided to go to Ottawa as well, does anything pop to your mind as one of those must sees/eat at/etc?
Kali: dw :: donna :: in my wedding dress_thirty2flavors on July 13th, 2012 04:59 pm (UTC)
LOL

Well I guess it depends what you're looking to do. If you want to do like the really tourist-y "must sees", obviously there's Parliament and they do tours around the grounds and you can also just go up the Peace Tower which is a nice view of Ottawa. The grounds around Parliament Hill are quite nice as well, lots of greenspace and you can find a path and go down by the water.

We have a lot of museums and some art galleries. There's the National Art Gallery, I think there's a Van Gogh exhibit this summer. We also have the National Arts Centre which is where we have plays and (orchestral-type) concerts and stuff so you might want to look into that if you wanna see something at night.

The nicest museum is probably the Museum of Civilization, which is actually just across the river in Quebec. It's a nice museum though I don't know what their temp exhibit is right now, and from there you have a really nice view of the back of Ottawa/Parliament.

We also have the Nature Museum, which as been revamped since I was last there so it's probably nicer, and there's a War Museum which was also recently re-done, and a bit further out of the city is the Science & Tech Museum which was always my favourite as a kid.

Downtown has the Byward Market, which is just one of those markets where you can walk around and people sell produce and arts & crafts and stuff. That's also where the sort of hub of like, restaurants and little stores and stuff is, my personal favourites being the candy and gelato and stuff lol.

The big shopping mall is the Rideau Centre. I don't think it's anything you can't get at any shopping mall, but if you want a shopping mall there it is. It's also like a block from the Market.

If you're into visiting churches and stuff, St Patrick's Basilica is very beautiful. I don't think there's a fee to go in, but I don't remember.

Happy Canada Day! What a beautiful montage. The colours of the food really complement Pamela Anderson's skin tone.
Speaking of homelands, mine just scored a goal in the Euro final yay *waves flag*

EDIT: This is one of the small islands of livejournal that's currently working properly. Just want to share my love for Canadian low-budget science-fiction movies. 'Last Night' and 'Pontypool' are the best apocalyptic and zombie movies respectively that I've seen <3
Also, Spain won :D *basks in national pride*

IKR it is all the things I am proudest of in one graphic, lol.

Spain! When we were at the bar yesterday afternoon everyone inside was watching the Euro game lolol. As a typical Canadian though I know nothing about any sport that isn't hockey.

I have not heard of either of those films! But I'm impressed, because Canadian film and television is notoriously terrible.
ibishtar: Stuffibishtar on July 2nd, 2012 07:23 pm (UTC)
Those two movies are pretty much the only Canadian films I've seen, and left me with the impression that the country must be an untapped cornucopia of film-making prowess. You've shattered my dreams XD
You really should watch Last Night at least. In it, everyone knows that the world is going to end in 12 hours, and it's about how various people decide to deal with that and have prepared for that moment. It's low-key, emotional, and has some great black humour.
I first learnt about Pontypool through Russell T Davies, of all people. He cited it as an example of a work of fiction where the log line lights such a fire in his imagination, he prefers to never see it and construct his own version of the story in his mind. The detail about Pontypool that fascinated RTD, and which is what makes it so different from other zombie movies, has to do with the method of transmission of the virus, but I won't spoil it. There's also a neat radio adaptation of the film with the same actors.

I have only recently discovered Tim Horton's, after nearly of year of living in upstate New York. (Although I had it first in Canada.) I'm moving in a month and all I can think about is "Tim Horton's, Y U NO IN CALIFORNIA."
Kali: dw :: ten :: thirteen sides_thirty2flavors on July 2nd, 2012 04:52 pm (UTC)
Nothing says Canada like Timmy's, it's true. When I was in London last summer we stumbled across one and it definitely felt more like "home" than the Canadiana-ed out "Maple Leaf" pub, lol.

LOL AND ON THAT NOTE:
