teach me your learnings, internet
My new computer came! Yay! It is fast and shiny and I am just getting everything set up now. There's NOTHING on here rn which is weird. WHAT IF I NEED TO EXPRESS MY THOUGHTS WITH A GIF? :O

Anyway I do have a couple queries for people who may have upgraded their technology more recently than I have. I've been using a Mac for ~5 years so I'm pretty familiar with that aspect of it, but I was still running Snow Leopard or w/e and now I am running ~Lion~ and STUFF IS DIFFERENT.

Is there a way to make Expose come back, or to somehow recreate Expose with the "Mission Control" settings? Because rn Mission Control is really not doing what I need it to do, which is give me an easy way to navigate between particular windows themselves, not just the programs. I can do that on my own ty. And like when I wanted to get to the desktop I used to be able to hit F-whatever and it would do that. I don't get how to make that happen with Mission Control.

Also, scrolling seems a little different? It is, predictably, more like when I scroll on my phone, and seems to act more like a wheel that sort of slowly ...winds down. I notice there's a setting for "smooth scroll" and I unchecked it because I thought it might be causing the difference, but I didn't notice anything changing. I'm playing around right now and I guess it might have something to do with how fast I scroll on the trackpad. IDK.

I thought I had other questions but I guess I don't yet. I am sure they will appear with time.

ETA: Ahaha I literally just found the "app expose" option after I hit post. As well as the "show desktop" gesture. So... there's that. I would still prefer to tie this to a key if possible?

MSN WORKS ON MY COMPUTER. jels yet?
Kali_thirty2flavors on December 2nd, 2011 09:09 pm (UTC)
LOL NOT REALLY, I'm pretty sure MSN is just a terrible program all around.
Hannahfirstofoct on December 2nd, 2011 09:11 pm (UTC)
You have the newest version downloaded, right? Maybe you could google your MSN problems? And if not, we could make a dramatic switch to AIM or Skype.

I think I do. It kept crashing every time I used the frog icon so lOLOLOL I guess it just really doesn't like that frog icon. I DO now have the option to make the icon stop bouncing which is awesome because I find it super distracting if I'm watching something and have more than one MSN window and the little MSN man is bouncing up and down.

Now you have my super sexy David Tennant icon to spend your days staring at.

It is tough to live in a world surrounded by smug Apple users all the time that I find solidarity where I can.

Kali: misfits :: check me the fuck out_thirty2flavors on December 2nd, 2011 09:48 pm (UTC)
It's different! I'm really not digging this scroll style though.
~caittheepiccek on December 2nd, 2011 09:53 pm (UTC)
you can change it! it's somewhere in settings! just I'm not sure where because it was a while ago!

pretty much everything new can be changed to be like Snow Leopard was, which is nice.
Kali: dw :: ten :: six words_thirty2flavors on December 2nd, 2011 09:58 pm (UTC)
I already changed it so that it doesn't do the weird... reverse... "natural" scrolling (where dragging your fingers down makes the screen go up, etc), but it still does the... when I stop scrolling there's a second or two before the screen kind of settles into place or w/e. I might be imagining it.
~cait: fuck i hope sotheepiccek on December 2nd, 2011 10:03 pm (UTC)
... huh. my computer doesn't do that. oh actually, i lie. it does when I'm on chrome occassionally, but that's a chrome thing now or something?
Kali_thirty2flavors on December 2nd, 2011 10:09 pm (UTC)
It's like when you scroll on an iPhone/iPod touch/etc, like it's designed to seem like you're scrolling a big wheel or w/e so it scrolls fast at first and then settles down before it finally stops.
ladysophiekitty: Donna/Doctor cheersladysophiekitty on December 2nd, 2011 09:58 pm (UTC)
My old computer was way old so I basically went from Tiger to Lion.
~caittheepiccek on December 2nd, 2011 10:04 pm (UTC)
oh wow, that's a big jump. I never actually used Tiger, or not extensively anyway. how was the adjustment?
ladysophiekitty: Katie McGrath winterladysophiekitty on December 2nd, 2011 09:56 pm (UTC)
My problem is that I usually keep my clicker finger on there, so sometimes it'll freeze while sensing my finger because it thinks it's another command and not the scroll up or down.
Kali: dw :: donna :: i hate christmas_thirty2flavors on December 2nd, 2011 10:01 pm (UTC)
I use the tap-click feature more than the actual clickybutton so I don't have that problem. I'm still not really adjusted to the new ~Mission Control~ thing. That's the biggest difference for me so far.
aleph: amy + hair + tardislacunaz on December 2nd, 2011 11:15 pm (UTC)
I prefer to use hot corners over keys, but theoretically you should be able to create an expose hotkey somewhere in system preferences, right? There's an option to do that staring me in the face. I don't actually know, I'm still running Snow Leopard, I just like to give worthless advice.

NEW COMPUTERS ARE PRETTY THOUGH. What model did you end up getting? Did you ditch CD drives for life and go with the Air? Stay traditional laptop with the Pro? These are the things I want to know.
Kali: dw :: martha :: bones of the hand_thirty2flavors on December 2nd, 2011 11:36 pm (UTC)
There definitely used to be a feature because I used it, but it seems to have been broken up and separated. I guess I'll also just have to start using tabs more often than I used to, lol.

I got the Macbook Pro. The Air is nice but I don't need one that small really, and I like having a CD drive. My computer is where I play all my DVDs and stuff so I would like to be able to actually do that without an external drive. It's the 13" 2.8GHz. The battery life rn is blowing my mind, it's been running for like THREE HOURS :O and still has 56% left. My old Macbook was down to about 20 minutes of battery life so this is a whole new world~~~.
turtle_gooseturtle_goose on December 3rd, 2011 02:24 am (UTC)
There were a few things I had to get used to in Lion. but I wouldn't have it any other way.

I LOVE reverse scrolling.
Kali: sd :: new york i love you_thirty2flavors on December 3rd, 2011 02:34 am (UTC)
I'm slowl yfiguring it out. I'm back on my old computer right now though while it charges back up again.

LOL I realize now that I was not at all clear in this entry that I wasn't talking about "natural" scrolling when I said scrolling seemed different. I turned that off right away because no ty.

Ooooh, Lion. Fancy. I'm not even sure what mine is -- 10.5.8. I'm not sure that's even Snow Leopard -- all I know is that when they came out with the App Store, I was disappointed because my software didn't support it.

What else is different?

ETA: Ah, just checked, and I love Leopard. Plain Leopard, not Snow.

I totally didn't even realize the App Store existed until I was playing around on my computer, lol.

Lion is pretty nice but I do have some complaints. LIKE HOW HARD IT WAS TO MAKE THE COMPUTER REPEAT KEYS EASILY. I had to go into Terminal and enter a command I'd googled, there's no easy setting to turn it on. It's also a lot less colourful? All the graphics on the sidebar of the finder and stuff are in greyscale for some reason. There might be an option to turn it back on, but IDK.

There's something called Launchpad which is new as far as I know and allows you to open any application easily -- it's like on an iPod touch or iPhone, the way you flip through your apps. There's a bunch of new trackpad commands, too, like zoom, rotate, etc, though many of those don't work in every application as far as I can tell.
captaintish: Lost -- 100% Geekcaptaintish on December 5th, 2011 03:20 am (UTC)
Hmmm. I like the colorful graphics on mine.

LOL, I don't even know what the computer repeat keys are, so that probably wouldn't bother me too much.

Okay so this is like two months late but whatever. I'm catching up after my 2 month lj delinquancy and I'm doing it journal by journal so expect a few of these from me.

Anyway YAY MAC! I approve. I love having a mac. Pretty sure my computer still has snow leopard though. Is it worth upgrading to lion? Have you noticed a difference in performance or things being better or anything?
