oh, fandom.
So I guess there is some kind of fandom "movement" to make November 11th ~Matt Smith Day~.

Um or you could... be aware of the actual anniversary of an incredibly important event in international history.

Just saying.

My understanding is that Veteran's Day isn't as much of a "thing" in the US as Remembrance Day is here, but this skeeves me out. I would write it off as a bad article, but I've now seen it mentioned in three individual places. It seems like it doesn't require much more than a passing knowledge that November 11th is kind of important to think that maybe making the whole day about a fictional character based on a numeric coincidence is a tacky idea.

And going off what Kali said, since Matt Smith is British and lives in a country that takes 11/11 pretty seriously, is it really respecting him as an actor to instead make the day about him? I can appreciate that the day might not hold significance to everyone worldwide (and IA that fandom is more than just the U.S./UK/Canada etc.!) but if we're celebrating Matt Smith who I assume on the 11th will be respectfully observing Remembrance Day himself, is it really all that respectful as fans to ignore that and instead make it about him?

I am obviously not a celebrity, but I know I would personally feel very uncomfortable if someone tried to make 11/11 about me rather than people who have given their lives for my country.
