6x06 The Almost People

Okay, this was way better than last week's. Thoughts:

  • Ten! Okay, so I would've missed that if I didn't have the heads-up that he had a "cameo", but I was still like :D even if that voice + that body is super weird.
  • Way more interesting than the first half, as I said. The pace was quicker, the character stuff was good, Scottish Man and his son were good, the standard clone ethics were standard clone ethics but they were applied in a more interesting way now that we'd had everything set up.
  • A couple of the twists actually took me by surprise! In a fun way! Like the two gangers of Jenny took me a minute to realize (until she made Rory open the... thing), etc.
  • I really grew to like Ganger Cleaves. She was awesome. Can she and Clone Eleven please survive somehow and go off and have adventures together because they'd be A+.
  • SPEAKING OF CLONELEVEN, omfg the Cloneleven/Eleven shenanigans were AWESOME and I am sure you can all guess why they are relevant to my interests. I liked the whole angst over whether or not Amy accepted him as the Real Doctor, and the "almost the Doctor" bit and the "you might as well call me John Smith" and then HAHA SURPRISE WE SWITCHED SHOES, AMY YOU CAN'T EVEN TELL THEM APART, BOOM ROASTED. That was all fabulous.
  • Also, THAT ENDING. WHAT. What. Okay, that actually took me by surprise. I am always wary when people are like ~OMG U WILL NEVER BELIEVE THE TWIST~ but it actually surprised me. GANGER AMY, WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE? REAL AMY, WHERE U BEEN ...FOR NINE MONTHS? WHAT IS GOING ON.
  • HOWEVER considering we spent the whole episode establishing that gangers are people, it's pretty odd that Eleven was so ruthless about exploding gangerAmy. How long has she been gangerAmy?

All in all, A+. Although it's unfortunate that the show is deciding to take a hiatus right as I am getting into this season.

THIS IS KINDA MAKING ME WANT TO WATCH. EVEN WITH MY DNW OF THE TEN THING. Eleven switching shoes is totally validating in every way.

Doesn't blowing up Amy invalidate that a little, though?

I was making dinner so I missed that! :( Ah well. I guess that's why God created BBC iPlayer.

I definitely agree that it was better than the first half, but I still wasn't ~thrilled. And I did definitely enjoy the Eleven and ganger!Eleng antics and the fact that they basically were just sticking it to Amy. LOL. NICE ONE, ELEVEN. And I think that ganger Amy was created sometime between episodes 1 and 2? Although wait no. If ganger Amy was created then, she' she'd be pregnant because original recipe Amy was... right? So then ganger Amy was created before Amy got pregnant and was somehow swicthed with real Amy later??? IDGI.

HOWEVER considering we spent the whole episode establishing that gangers are people, it's pretty odd that Eleven was so ruthless about exploding gangerAmy. How long has she been gangerAmy?
YES. I DID NOT UNDERSTAND THIS. WTF? WHYYY? IT MAKES NO SENSE.

I loved the clone shenanigans with the two Doctors, that was awesome. "You might as well call me John Smith" -LOL this sounds familiar.

HOWEVER considering we spent the whole episode establishing that gangers are people, it's pretty odd that Eleven was so ruthless about exploding gangerAmy. I got the impression that ganger!Amy was still being controlled by real Amy, so it was like that body died and she woke up in the hospital, but yeah, it is a bit weird. Especially considering Jeniffer claims to remember all the times she's been decomissioned, ugh.

Also if the Doctor knew Amy was a ganger this whole time then why did he go off and have adventures with pirates and stuff instead of going after her right away? :/

I think he was stalling until she was ready to deliver. Or until he figured out how to safely break the connection. Or both. But he was defintely stalling, which is why he did not pick up and go after the clues in TIA right away.

This episode was so amusing! And always relevant. I love clones of Doctors. EQUAL RIGHTS FOR ALL CLONE DOCTORS.

lolol omg Amy's rejection of cloneleven (WHY DO YOU ALWAYS COME UP WITH THE BEST CLONE DOCTOR NAMES KALI??) and his desire to be seen as the "real" Doctor and not John Smith was like watching really bad fanfic come to life.

IKR! AND THEY FAKED US OUT WITH EVIL DOCTOR CLONE WHO WOUND UP BEING NEITHER EVIL NOR A CLONE. Cloneleven and his companion Cleaves should get up to shenanigans.

CLONELEVEN NEEDS TO COME BACK SO ELEVEN CAN BE BFFS WITH HIMSELF. CLEAVES CAN COME TOO.

I rewatched the very beginning to get the DT voice cameo and the very end to see what the fuck happened. Amy waking up a giant white tube, in labour with a child she didn't even know she was carrying, not knowing where she is, is legit the stuff of nightmares. That is some seriously disturbing shit.

CLONELEVEN AND HIS COMPANION CLEAVES SHOULD DEFINITELY MAKE A CAMEO. Cloneleven and Eleven can be buds.

Yeah it's actually pretty seriously disturbing. POOR AMY WHAT ARE THEY DOING TO YOU :(

I am confused - are you watching on BBCA or downloading it or what? Because I was watching the end of the last episode, then, instead of airing this one it... aired The Impossible Astronaut again. And I'm not a happy camper. There is serious wtfery afoot.

I had to rewind to confirm this, and then rewind back just to hear D.T.'s voice back on Doctor Who. xD

On Doctor Who Confidential, it was confirmed that Ganger!Amy was part of all those adventures. She's the one that saw the Doctor die. She was somehow kidnapped probably in the end of her honeymoon or something.

HOWEVER considering we spent the whole episode establishing that gangers are people, it's pretty odd that Eleven was so ruthless about exploding gangerAmy. How long has she been gangerAmy?

I wouldn't say ruthless, just pissed off. Someone went and kidnapped his best friend/companion under his and Rory's noses. I would totally pissed off and probably get all OncomingStorm!Ten more then RAGE!Eleven. He killed off the signal to find her. This is why I sometimes dislike Moffat!Who. It's such a mind fuck.

LOL I am glad. I was so horrified at the prospect of Cloneleven deciding to go by "John Smith" and turning evil, so I was really pleased when that whole thing was subverted.

Yeah but that's not the fault of gangerAmy. He said he was going to be humane but IDK. I hope we get more in-text explanation of why he had to kill gangerAmy. I mean, it would be complicated to keep her around, since you'd have two Amys, but the whole point of this two-parter was that gangers are people and have just as much right to exist, so...

QUESTION THO
I was watching the episode with a craptastic connection but what was the Ten cameo line? And was right after it the "no let it go we've moved on" bit? And was that the Rose reference we've been promised? BECAUSE THAT WOULD HARSH A LOT OF MY SQUEE FOR THIS EPISODE.
Kali_thirty2flavors on May 29th, 2011 03:26 am (UTC)
Ten's cameo line was "Hello, I'm the Doctor!" It doesn't stick out as much as Tom Baker's does, because Matt Smith and David Tennant's voices aren't so different, but you can hear it, especially if you close your eyes to ignore the visual cue of Matt Smith. Not that I, er, did that, or anything.

So was Amy evil or something? Is that why Eleven killed her? I thought that the clones were supposed to be separate but equal or something. Basically my reaction when reading people's reaction posts has been:

Kali_thirty2flavors on May 29th, 2011 04:36 am (UTC)
I'm not really sure, but I rewatched the end a couple times and I think he might've needed to kill her Ganger so that the real Amy could wake up. It wasn't like two separate Amys running around, I'm pretty sure gangerAmy was an avatar for realAmy the way the gangers are meant to be -- so essentially kind of like realAmy was controlling the body remotely.

Fandom seems pretty split on this one, but I liked it.

HANG ON, WHERE WAS TEN'S CAMEO? DID I MISS IT? I watched the part twice when he was coping about past regenerations and I don't hear him?! But yes this episode was AWESOME and I loved it. I was NOT expecting that twist in the end there, especially with Ganger!Amy and Real!Amy being locked away for so long. This explains a lot now, particularly when she was gone for all those days.

I also think the Doctor was so ruthless because this one doesn't really give a shit. Genocide is how he rolls. AND because he said "there might be a way we can survive this" so I think that possibly Ganger!Eleven could be alive somehow. IDK THIS WAS ALL A MIND FUCK AND IT'S 3 AM.
Kali: dw :: amy :: from history books_thirty2flavors on May 29th, 2011 03:24 pm (UTC)
It's there! His voice doesn't stick out as much as Tom Baker's, it might be easier to hear if you just listen and don't watch so that the visual cue of Matt Smith doesn't override it. But it's right after he does the "would you like a Jelly baby?" in Tom Baker's voice, then he says "why why why?" a few times as Matt Smith, and then he straightens up and goes, "Hello, I'm the Doctor!" in David Tennant's voice.

I was not expecting Ganger Amy at all! Apparently in the Confidential they confirm that it's been Ganger Amy the entirety of s6? Which, WTF. Poor Amy, that ending was the stuff of nightmares.

YES THIS! This is my biggest confusion about this whole episode which I ranted about multiple times in my own reaction post. The other Gangers became real people (after being in the TARDIS which leads to a whole other set of questions about Amy) and we had all that set up for the Doctor's being the same and then BOOM he vaporizes Amy with no explantation. I DON'T GET IT! ELEVEN EXPLAIN YOURSELF *silence* *sigh*
Alia: AmyRory1anonymouscatt on May 30th, 2011 05:57 am (UTC)
He does say something like, "Given what we've learned I'll be as humane as I can, but I need to do this..." I think it has something to do with the baby. I am assuming proper!Amy was still in control of her ganger the entire time, and she wouldn't be able to give birth properly if they were still connected, since one body is pregnant and the other isn't. So he cut the connection, and Amy's mind snaps back to her real body which is going into labor.

Hopefully Rory will demand an explanation out of the Doctor next time and we will get a definite answer, but that is my best guess.

You and me both! :D This is the bit RTD left hanging, and it has always irritated the heck outta me! One reason I came over to LJ was to read "revisions' which did deal with this - or showed what RTD did not show, as far as 10.5 being the doctor. I was darn near cheering at the screen with the "clone/original" stuff in this episode. Ah, if only we'd had something like this for 10.5 and Rose. :: sigh ::

I also found it very weird that 11 just blasted ganger Amy to bits, after that ep where it was clear the "almost people" didn't refer to the gangers, but some gangers and some humans-- some of whom got the change to 'become human' by their own choices as the ep went on. I found ganger 11 a bit less scary than original 11.

Loved Loved LOVED the bits of past incarnations in there! Dang it all, I MISSED that one was Ten! I caught 1 through 4.

There were some cheesy bits and weak bits in this ep, but overall I loved it.
Kali: dw :: cloen :: i can see!_thirty2flavors on May 30th, 2011 01:35 pm (UTC)
To be fair to RTD, he didn't have an entire two-parter to dedicate to the idea that Ten and Cloen were the same person. There was too much going on, and you wound up with a bit of shorthand with both Doctors insisting he was the same, the same way Eleven and Cloneleven did, and the audience being expected to trust that. That's kind of the fault of RTD's overambitious finales, but I can see why there wasn't time to have them run off and switch suits as a social experiment. Plus, the take-away message seemed to be that a duplicate with all the same memories and emotional responses to those memories is the same/just as good as the original person, which is consistent with JE. I've seen people somehow use this as an argument that Rose got "ripped off" or whatever, but I literally have no idea how those people got that from the this episode, since that is the exact opposite of what this episode said.

I've since kind of decided that gangerAmy wasn't an autonomous being the way the other gangers were -- she was an avatar like the gangers were supposed to be, but killing gangerAmy allowed realAmy to wake up (and to give birth). I guess there would be pretty severe complications between having gangerAmy, who is not pregnant, being controlled by realAmy, who is pregnant, but thinks she's gangerAmy etc. It's pretty complicated and Iw ouldn't be opposed to getting this clarified in the next episode.

Ten's comes just after Four. You have Four's voice saying "would you like a jelly baby?" and then Matt Smith's voice saying "why why why?" and then Ten's voice saying "hello, I'm the Doctor!" It doesn't stick out nearly as much as Tom Baker's very deep voice, but it's there.

Yeah, this episode was by no means flawless, but I found it entertaining and compelling and with twists that surprised me.
