thanks to a conversation with firstofoct
I am now curious: has anyone read all of the Series of Unfortunate Events books? Can someone give me a basic run-down of the ending and whether or not it was happy or whatever? I read the first five years ago and lost interest but I've always been curious and Wikipedia is confusing and vague.

How many licks DOES it take to get to the centre of a tootsiepop?

What really is hiding under your bed?

LOL NOW THIS IS SOUNDING LIKE A MOFFAT BRAINSTORMING SESSION.
Kali_thirty2flavors on April 14th, 2011 10:32 pm (UTC)
LOL LOL

He should do an epsiode about not sleeping with your hand and/or leg dangling over the edge of the bed. I guess GITF was kind of like that.
Hannahfirstofoct on April 14th, 2011 10:34 pm (UTC)
He should just take plots right out of Are You Afraid of the Dark.
Kali_thirty2flavors on April 14th, 2011 10:38 pm (UTC)
Omg I almost wrote that as a comment instead of the bed thing, no joke.
Hannahfirstofoct on April 14th, 2011 10:41 pm (UTC)
:O

We talk to each other too much.
michelemiss_mishi on April 15th, 2011 01:36 pm (UTC)

touche
Kali_thirty2flavors on April 15th, 2011 10:00 pm (UTC)
Omg omg omg there needs to be an episode with an invisible acidic ghost monster living in the TARDIS swimming pool

and then the Doctor defeats it by neutralizing it with SCIENCE!!! and a base

that was my favourite episode

I thought the science was hardcore.

also on reflection it was racist.
michelemiss_mishi on April 15th, 2011 10:01 pm (UTC)
ahahahahahaha omg kali you can't make me laugh I have a cough and it hurtssss
Kali_thirty2flavors on April 15th, 2011 10:16 pm (UTC)
I rewatched it on youtube like a year or two ago

and Mish

the reason for the whole plot

is that the school was --

wait for it --

built on an "Indian burial ground"

The end was ambiguous and COMPLETELY UNSATISFYING I HAVE A LOT OF RESIDUAL ANGER ABOUT THIS.

But the first twelve books were AMAZING and I love them.
Hannahfirstofoct on April 14th, 2011 11:40 pm (UTC)
LOL. IKR?

I read all 13 books and liked them when I read them, but I do not think I understood the ending or the entire plot of the series.
shipsta, pleasedaisysusan on April 15th, 2011 01:22 am (UTC)
I loved them and was obsessed and spent ages trying to figure everything out, so it felt like a total scam that there wasn't any payoff to the years of my life I spent trying to put all the pieces together.
Kali_thirty2flavors on April 15th, 2011 09:27 pm (UTC)
Wow that sounds annoying, there's nothing more annoying than investing time in a series and getting a totally shit ending. Glad I jumped ship when I did. I was a bit too old when I picked them up, so I never kept up with them, but I was always curious about whether there would be a happy ending or not -- I mean, it said there wouldn't be, but it's a kids' series.
shipsta, pleasedaisysusan on April 15th, 2011 09:46 pm (UTC)
It wasn't a sad ending, per se, just an ambiguous one. And I really did love them so I think you ought to finish the series. I mean, they're kid's books but I know a lot of adults who read and enjoyed them. :)
Kali_thirty2flavors on April 15th, 2011 09:57 pm (UTC)
Did the writing style mature at all? I don't mind reading kids' books -- I loooove Harry Potter, and I just recently read Pullman's stuff for the first time -- but I remember that Lemony Snicket's writing started off charming and then started to grate on me, with things like the "a word which here means [blah]" stuff.
shipsta, pleasedaisysusan on April 15th, 2011 10:09 pm (UTC)
Yeah, the writing style matured, and the plots did too. And this whole crazy mythology started building up, especially after the sixth book. The attention to detail was amazing. My mother and I spent hours pouring over every little bit to get all the pieces together, and working out anagrams, and all kinds of stuff.

And as for some of the stuff like him being all "a word which here means [blah]," it got more clever. Like, if you were paying attention, the definitions would be circular.
Austinjohnmayergirl23 on April 15th, 2011 12:52 am (UTC)
Hmm. I feel like I read the first eleven books, but I cannot say that I understood the overall plot. I did ship Violet/Quigley though
shipsta, pleasedaisysusan on April 15th, 2011 01:21 am (UTC)
Violet/Quigley was the best thing ever! (With a supplement of Klaus/Isadora. Fiona who?)
Austinjohnmayergirl23 on April 15th, 2011 02:10 am (UTC)
wow, it's been years since i read those books, because i cannot even remember isadora or fiona.

but i always remember that part in "the slippery slope" where lemony's like "and then violet and quigley had a nice moment on the mountaintop, but i won't repeat it here for you nosy people" or something. LOL LEMONY SNICKET WHAT A TROLL (but for real, 6th-grade-me thought that was ridiculously romantic)
shipsta, pleasedaisysusan on April 15th, 2011 02:40 am (UTC)
Isadora was the girl of the Quagmire triplets. Does that ring a bell? And Fiona was the mushroom-loving chick from the eleventh book of which I can't remember the name right now.

I remember that too! Sixth-grade me also thought it was ridic romantic. Lemony's trolling is still amusing and also kind of sweet because if I were making out with Quigley I would not want all you nosy people reading about it either.
Sarah Catherineelirrina on April 15th, 2011 02:16 am (UTC)
Me too, yay Violet/Quigley.
Kali: dw :: peruvian folk band :: black tie_thirty2flavors on April 15th, 2011 09:28 pm (UTC)
I had no idea there was even an intense plot tbh, since I only read the first couple books and it was well before an intense plot developed other than "Count Olaf wants money".

I totally loved the movie though when it came out in grade 9 or whatever. HATERS GONNA HATE I thought it was hilarious. Also 13-year-old Kali thought Klaus was so attractive, lol @ me.
Nichothodes Koryfoides: asoiaf | if I look back I am lostplacebetween on April 15th, 2011 02:03 am (UTC)
better yet, I read all of the books and I have no idea what the plot of the last three were
Kali_thirty2flavors on April 15th, 2011 09:29 pm (UTC)
LOL I GOT OUT AT THE RIGHT TIME I SEE

I picked them up when I was a bit too old, so all his "___ which here means ___" pissed me off rather than entertaining me, etc. But I wanted to know if the ending was happy or not because the laws of children's fiction says yes, despite Lemony Snicket saying no.
Nichothodes Koryfoidesplacebetween on April 15th, 2011 09:33 pm (UTC)
I was too old too, but that was one of the elements I loved about the books.

In other news I am 3/4 of the way through "The Beast Below" SO I GUESS I WATCH DOCTOR WHO NOW
Kali: dw :: new kids :: gotcha_thirty2flavors on April 15th, 2011 09:36 pm (UTC)
LOL BEAST BELOW

YOU ARE IN FOR THE SUBTLEST WRITING EVER

haha no I kid. Well sort of. I liked that episode but I rewatched it recently and I was dying at the last like 5 minutes. You're almost in time to watch s6 though.

I read them ages ago and remember being highly confussled about it all. I remember something about what's his name? The bad guy? Yeah, he ended up having some tragic backstory or something where he was in love with the kids' mother (?) or maybe he was her brother? But anyway, he died. And that's pretty much all I remember from the end lol. That's not really helpful at all...

But I *think* it was meant to be a happy ending. I mean, he stopped chasing after their money and stuff...
Kali_thirty2flavors on April 15th, 2011 09:54 pm (UTC)
Hmmm I guess that is pretty happy all things considered! I was curious mostly because the books kept repeating that there wouldn't be a happy ending, and even as a kid I was like "BULLSHIT, IT'S KIDS' BOOKS". But I didn't care enough to read all 13.
Sarah Catherineelirrina on April 15th, 2011 02:16 am (UTC)
Well... I liked the series. I kind of have a problem with the ending. It is very vague, but I don't think it could have ended otherwise, because you're told from the outset that these are all unfortunate events. So the alternative would probably be for the Baudelaires to end up dead. This way, they might have survived, I guess.
Kali_thirty2flavors on April 15th, 2011 10:02 pm (UTC)
I liked them when I was reading them, but I was reading them at my cousin's house and didn't care enough to buy my own copies when I got home lol.

Was it ambiguous on whether or not they lived?
michelemiss_mishi on April 15th, 2011 01:36 pm (UTC)
I read all of them because I was determined to get through them despite loathing lemony snicket's writing style with all the fires of my soul

but I honestly can't remember how they ended
Kali_thirty2flavors on April 15th, 2011 10:03 pm (UTC)
I thought his writing style was cute at first but it got annoying to me. I just felt too old for it. And I don't mind feeling too old for things sometimes, but with this I found it aggravating when I tried to pick them up later. STOP FAKE-DEFINING WORDS, DAMNIT.

I really liked the movie when it came out though. I was like 13 and I thought Klaus was very attractive lolol
michelemiss_mishi on April 15th, 2011 10:04 pm (UTC)

At first I thought it was cute, and also I was young enough that I didn't know all the words. But when I got older I foudn it annoying.
ladysophiekitty: Fringe Olivia forestladysophiekitty on April 15th, 2011 03:53 pm (UTC)
I read all of them a while ago. I lost interest but kept reading them just because. I don't remember the ending, but I remember it was very unsatisfying and I kept thinking, "Wait, I read all of those books for THAT?"
Jeanne "dancing in the" d'Arcrose_dawson on April 15th, 2011 11:33 pm (UTC)
Has anybody actually told you the ending though

I haven't read one since the last book came out but the epilogue chapter is that they're raising Count Olaf's baby, I think it's his baby--this woman he loves washes up on the beach and goes into labor. They haven't really found out the answers to any of the mysteries about their parents/VFD/whatever but I remember the message being like, even though they haven't found any answers and everyone they knew/loved has died they're still happy with each other. They have a family with the baby, each Baudelaire has his/her own role in the family, and they're all satisfied, like bad stuff happens in life but as long as you have your family it's okay. You don't get answers but I think it was a happy ending for them.
Kali_thirty2flavors on April 15th, 2011 11:36 pm (UTC)
Has anybody actually told you the ending though

NO

LIRL

Ohhhh I see. That seems like a decent ending I guess, and fits the tone of the series.

I was wondering where you had gone btw.
Churleekageek on April 16th, 2011 10:00 am (UTC)
Unrelated reply BUT I just have to say I JUST finished my undergraduate thesis on a rhetorical analysis of contemporary vampire fiction (including Twilight) and your icon makes me lol a bit. XD
