A Christmas Carol: Doctor Who style  

THAT... was pretty much what I expected it to be, which is to say cute and sweet but sort of inconsequential. At the end of s5 I was excited by the prospect of a Christmas special with proper companions again, so naturally this one... ended up being all about Dumbledore's man pain and Amy and Rory had about 15 lines combined. BUT it was still enjoyable and I still love Eleven.

Assorted thoughts:

  • My entire thoughts on the time travel logic of this episode: "How... did... what... ???" I mean, omg, Old Kazran hugged bb Kazran, HOW DOES THAT EVEN WORK. I know this show sucks at continuity with science, but...
  • Totally called Abigail and her limited life span, the countdown was obvious. It was kind of a neat idea though and I loled at the Doctor's attempt to make someone's life better just giving them MOAR EXISTENTIAL ANGST! You would, Doctor.
  • omg Eleven WAS basically like "ooo did you go to a costume party?" loool
  • Needed way moar Rory, he had about five lines. Also lol poor Arthur Darvill's name doesn't get a lightning sound affect to go along with it.
  • LOL Space Fish. I love the space aquarium going on.
  • I wasn't blown away by Katherine Jenkins' acting, but her voice is awesome. I can see why they cast her, considering.
  • lol Marilyn Monroe. Eleven! Welcome to the snogging-hot-blondes club!
  • Having said that, I usually find it odd when the Doctor apparently has months of whacky shenanigans off camera. I don't really care much this time, and maybe it's just because it's Eleven, but lol. I am glad they found a way to shove a fez into it though.
  • It took me a while to realize Dumbledore's dad was played by Dumbledore. I am smart.
  • Omg Eleven's advice about snogging and how "otherwise you end up in your room designing a new screwdriver", lol forever. Actually there were a few moments/lines in here I can see fandom latching into in terms of Doctor/Rose, ngl. I mean, I am sure that was not intentional, but w/e I do what I want.
  • LOL @ RORY PUNCHING ELEVEN'S CHEST AS A GREETING. Omg I just want OT3 Team Tardis interaction why is this so hard, show.
  • The sled-pulled-by-shark omg what even


I think that is about it off the top of my head. So like I said, I enjoyed it a lot but it falls into the "largely irrelevant" category that half the Christmas specials fall into, which is a shame. But at least it was better than Next Doctor, jfc.

The series 6 trailer was cool. I love trailers, IDK, they're just so exciting. The Utah landscape does look gorgeous, ngl. Amy and Rory backpacking! Eleven in a Stetson! The doll ... thingies! Crazy bearded Matt Smith!

Just watched the episode myself. very meh - I was disappointed by the lack of Ponds! The S6 trailer looks nifty though, so I'll probably tune in.

...also, I reeeally enjoyed that Amy/Rory were having costume!honeymoon!sexytimes...probably way more than I should...but then, really, who could blame Amy for having Rory dress up as a centurion again.

And the OT3 at the end, all playful punches, was pretty damn spectacular.

The promo material all led me to believe the Ponds weren't in it much, so I wasn't surprised, although I definitely would have liked to see more of them. I mean if I want specials where the Doctor does everything alone I have all of Ten's, lol. But it was enjoyable nonetheless and as (eseentially) companionless Christmas episodes go, it was better than Next Doctor and... well IDK I am fond of VOTD but I think that's mostly just because Ten is in it and wearing a tux, lol.

I am even more anxious for a proper episode of them as a TARDIS team though, omg. Get on with it already!

Gah! I totally thought Eleven was thinking about Rose when Kazaren was asking about how the Doctor would chose how to spend one last day with the woman he loved. Ten will forever be My Doctor, but Matt really is starting to take the threads simultaneously both make the Doctor his own AND allow viewers to see that he hasn't forgotten the past.

Oh my that beard! I can't wait to see what happened there.

I thought about it then as well! There were a few other times but I don't remember when. I like Matt Smith as the Doctor more and more the more I see of him, ngl. I'm sure Ten will always be my favourite, but Eleven is probably my second favourite. (I think Nine was better written on the whole, ngl, so far anyway, but Eleven is very lovable.)

I have my suspicions about the beard. It looks like most of the clips are from the American premiere episode. ~intriguing~

I got a leather jacket! ALL COMPANIONS NEED A LEATHER JACKET DUH.

Actually they had a red one on sale that was very Marthaish but I don't look very good in red alas. Hopefully someone out there bought it and appreciated it for what it was.

OMG that beard picture, it was only there for a second but I thought I was going to die. Matt Smith, I'm so sorry you apparently can't grow a real enough beard that they made you put that on your face.

I need to watch this episode again (too many family members running around and making noise during important parts) but I liked it. It was Christmasy enough I guess. Except for the whole CHILD ABUSE PART, but w/e.

I have absolutely no shame in latching on to lines that could be relevant to Doctor/Rose. I'll just be up front about that. His advice on snogging was fricking hilarious.

Why weren't Amy and Rory in it more!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It could be that they aren't filming enough beard scenes for it to be reasonable to let him grow out that beard, but LOL it looks so bad.

The child abuse thing surprised me. It was much more Christmassy than EOT, lol, but it was less... important. Like, it falls into the VOTD/TND category of irrelevant Christmas specials with no influence on the actual plot.

Ikr? It needed way more Ponds.

This episode didn't really ~dazzle~ me (however, I always enjoy the mandatory "Christmas is cancelled!" and I think I clapped at the Space Sharks) although I suspect I would have enjoyed it more if I'd watched it alone. I tried to watch it with family around and they were being disrespectful of my Doctor Who bubble.

When Eleven went back in time to mess with Kazran's memories I was just like "oh Moffat, be more predictable" but it still turned out okay. I will probably file it under irrelevant as well, because all I wanted was OT3-ness and they barely delivered.

The S6 trailer was the most exciting part, ngl. I assume Eleven forgot to concentrate really hard about not growing facial hair while in captivity.

Oh I HATE that, they just SIT THERE JUDGING YOUR TELEVISION. I waited until everyone was asleep and the holed myself up alone with it, lol. I think it was good but not dazzling. Sort of exactly what I expected, actually, except with even less Ponds than I anticipated.

The s6 trailer was the best part.

I won't even lie, I can see Eleven purposely doing the exact opposite and sitting there in captivity trying to grow a beard. And then the Ponds get to him and are like 'DUDE WTF IT'S ONLY BEEN THREE HOURS" and he is like "I know don't my mutton chops look great?"

teenage Kazan was sort of... attractive? in a i might jump them bones sort of way? (but only in the 1950's APPARENTLY I AM VERY PARTICULAR)

MARILYN MONROE OH MY LORD. I'LL JUST GET MARRIED THEN. ngl, the whole every xmas eve thing was cute, but wow way to be obvious limited lifespan.

season 6, please get here now.

ALTHOUGH I saw someone point out how for some reason Moffat thinks that anyone will snog someone who they've known primarily as a child if they stumble upon that person looking hot 5 minutes later, which sort of ruined some of the tragic love story for me. I MEAN... they have a point. But he was attractive.

I dn't like facial hair either, but on Matt Smith I feel it just accentuates his weird bone structure.

Of course it also looks very pasteded on so that could be part of it.

Lol, at least it didn't take you over a day to figure out that the bearded guy was Eleven...*facepalm* Now I know why this actor looked SO FAMILIAR, though I couldn't place him while watching the promo. I kept seeing people talk about Eleven with a beard and going, "What, I don't remember that..." :p
