the first season of lost on dvd!
I. First order of business:

Whoo! Go forth and prompt, etc.

II. Second order of business, I am reading The Girl Who Played With Fire. I'm only about ~150 pages in, so I don't think anything I say can really count as a spoiler. And what I have to say is: OH MY GOD LARSSON ARE YOU BEING PAID BY THE WORD, LIKE DICKENS? COME ON. This book is 700 pages long and if you took out all the extraneous, useless detail it could be about 350, I bet. I don't mind the books -- I find them interesting enough to read them, obviously -- and I can forgive some o the weird sentence construction and hilarious metaphors as being the result of a translation. That's all fine.

But there is no reason I should ever need to know the laundry list of what the character bought at the grocery store. I really don't need a five page passage dedicated to what particular style of furniture in what colour Lisbeth is buying from IKEA. Omg, I don't understand, are you being paid by Ikea?? hysteriagalore, as the voice of Sweden, do all Swedish people actually know the name/style of every single item in the Ikea catalogue? I complained to Tania about this, because she's read them, and she said "yeah I skimmed those parts" and I probably should've too, but I basically read every single word because I was so fascinated by what was happening. I was like "no, omg, he's not writing out every single Ikea item she purchases, THIS CANNOT BE REAL" and yet it was. I think I also give Larsson some slack because it's a ~mystery~ and any detail could be important, theoretically, but there comes a time when I have to accept that Lisbeth buying toilet paper is not plot relevant. It's just not. This entire chapter could've been summed up with like, a single paragraph that said "And then Lisbeth spent an afternoon furnishing her new apartment". DONE.

Also, it's still hilarious to me how everyone ever wants to sleep with Blomkvist and they are all also okay that everyone else is sleeping with Blomkvist.

III. Third order of business, Community was awesome.

II. That's the sequel to Girl Who Played With Fire? I've been told that series is very good, but I haven't read it yet?? How are you liking the series? How did you like the first book?

III. \o/ Yay! Can't wait to watch Community later tonight.
Kali: misfits :: untouchable_thirty2flavors on December 10th, 2010 02:25 am (UTC)
The first book is 'The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo', the one I'm reading now, 'Girl Who Played With Fire', is the sequel (and there's a third, 'The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest'). I enjoyed the first book, but it had slow moments. I'm enjoying the second book too, but I think there is some serious editing that should've been done. I really don't need to know everything on the character's shopping list.

They're disturbing, though. NGL reading the first one it was like "haha oh yeah normal fiction doesn't have warnings". It deals a lot with sexual assault and rape, and this second one, I'm not very far in yet but they're talking about sex slavery and stuff.

Community was adorable.
Hannahfirstofoct on December 10th, 2010 05:11 am (UTC)
Oooh. I'll have to read up a bit more on them to see if they'd really be something I'd be interested. I feel like I don't read enough actual books. I read so much fanfic these days, that it's weird to make the mental switch of going, oh, so the Doctor and Rose aren't the main characters? What???

Also fanfic is a lot cheaper lol.

I JUST WATCHED COMMUNITY. Oh my gosh. That was wonderful. And I get your seemingly random post title!

LOL I know. I am an English major so I read books for school a lot, but until September it had been a long time since I read something not-fic just for leisure. And then I started working and... wanted to read at lunch. So I've powered through a fair number of books in the last few months. I don't think this series is ZOMGAMAZING but it's entertaining enough that I keep reading, I guess.

LOL YES. I didn't want to post a quote that would be too obvious. The episode was adorable though.
Hannahfirstofoct on December 10th, 2010 04:26 pm (UTC)
I think the last thing I read for leisure that wasn't fanfic was The Hunger Games trilogy. And that was back in September. I always love a new series to try!

That episode was so cute and so Christmas-y. Abed is one of my favorite tv characters ever.
Kali: comm :: abed :: the dark knight_thirty2flavors on December 10th, 2010 04:34 pm (UTC)
I read the first book of that a couple weeks ago and was meh towards it. The internet has been loving a lot of things lately that I just can't get excited about. I feel very cut-off from everyone's glee.I would like to get super-excited about a book series but it hasn't really happened. I did like His Dark Materials but it was in a sort of intellectual way and less in a "omg this story is so great I want to LIVE IN IT" way.

I love Abed. When I was writing up Midnight questions for dwrewatch my brain was just like BOTTLE EPISODES ARE WALL-TO-WALL EMOTIONAL NUANCE AND FACIAL EXPRESSIONS.
Hannahfirstofoct on December 10th, 2010 04:44 pm (UTC)
Oh, I love when you get a series, whether it be tv or book or movie that you want to live in. To me, that's huge point for the author.

I find it hilarious/impressive that the episodes that are low budget for even Doctor Who are some of the most popular episodes. I mean, people seem to love Midnight. I know I do.
Kali_thirty2flavors on December 10th, 2010 06:39 pm (UTC)
Me too. It has been a while since I was really taken with anything though. Lately when I encounter something the internet loves, I think ti is okay, but then the more the internet tells me it is the best thing EVER the more I am like "NO IT SUCKED YOU SUCK". I dunno why this is but it is annoying.

LOL it's probably BECAUSE they're the low-budget ones. Special effects never work well for Doctor Who so it is best when they don't try.
Hannahfirstofoct on December 10th, 2010 07:52 pm (UTC)
LOL OMG I was walking to class when I was checking my email and reading this comment and I burst out laughing when I read the "NO IT SUCKED YOU SUCK" line. It's so true though. And that's kinda the reason I don't watch half the shows I don't. And right now that seems to be Misfits. But on the other hand, it's only a few episodes and the people I ~trust have been saying it's good. Hmmmm.

ITA re: special effects.

I loved Britta-bot's "bleep bloop" and Troy Soldier's drumstick-nunchucks. As always, John Oliver was amazing and I wish he were in every episode.

II. I never bothered reading the trilogy, it just doesn't interest me D:

I must say though I am guilty of knowing many of the product names, but that could be because I am obsessed with IKEA anyway :P The classics like "Billy", "Karlstad" and such you always know.

It's not great. I mean it's fun enough and I have the books so I might as well read them but it's not like, showstoppingly amazing.

I think even I know what the Billy is ngl, I am pretty sure there is one in my room. But like I honestly do not need to know what style and colour of bed/table/desk unit/computer chair/etc she bought. It was weird.

LMFAO. Is Blomkvist an author self-insert? I rolled my eyes through the two Dan Brown books I managed to read (neither of which was Da Vinci Code). Everyone wants to sleep with the protagonist all the time because he's so amazing and attractive and intelligent!!!!
Kali: comm :: britta's a b_thirty2flavors on December 10th, 2010 07:00 pm (UTC)
LOL I get that impression ngl. Like everyone wants to sleep with him but they're all okay with him not being in a committed relationship with any of them and/or sleeping with other people at the same time etc. His like... idk... quasi-girlfriend is married and everything and there's this like entire two page segment that's like "well I love my husband and he is great but he's totally okay with the fact that I will forever be sleeping with Blomkvist because he is just ~so amazing in bed omg~" and I was just cracking up. Like it would be okay I suppose if that was the only instance of this, open relationships and poly people exist, but when it is everyone in the story and it's all for the purpose of them sleeping with the main character I am left going LOLOL ORLY? The thing I am liking about book 2 so far though is that it is way more focused on Lisbeth, and Lisbeth is like infinity times more interesting than Blomkvist being the reincarnation of Casanova.

Did you watch last night's Misfits yet?

Sharonlatine on December 14th, 2010 02:26 am (UTC)
I know. I would move to Sweden if all males were that unstressful about the whole sleeping business.
