QUESTION for my worldly Doctor Who fans: what's the name of the museum from The Big Bang and where is it?

I was going to do Roman numerals but then I realized I have basically nothing else to say, so I will just cut straight to the 30-day meme. I bet you're all pumped.

Day 13 – Your Favourite Villain

The Master

Okay to be fair, it's not like there's any competition, because it's not like any of the other villains are even remotely dynamic or, um, anything. I mean, Davros? Cybermen for the millionth time? Who cares.

But the Master is still great, mostly because his entire mission in life seems to be "piss off the Doctor". The only way his grand scheme in Last of the Time Lords makes ANY sense to me is if we assume he just did it all for the lulz, which honestly seems like a believable motive with his characterisation so why not. I have only really seen John Simm in the role, unless you count Eric Roberts (and frankly, who does?), but he worked well as a foil for Ten and was generally entertaining to watch, which is the most I can ask of a villain. For some reason the fact that his plans were always completely cracked out and illogical just endeared him to me, as did the fact that he has the weirdest idea of captivity ever and totally hired someone to make a tiny pinstriped suit for Dobby. I sort of think his role in RTD's Who simultaneously encompassed everything that was good and bad about RTD's writing, giving us some of the weirdest plots ever alongside some really good, interesting character work. ...And a lot of gay subtext.

Day 14 – The Villain Who Scared You the Most

The Weeping Angels

Honestly, I don't scare easily at all, so there aren't really any on this show that terrified me. But part of the reason I decided to check out more episodes after watching "Blink" was because the Weeping Angels were creepy enough to intrigue me. However, I think that bringing them back in s5 and retconning just about everything about them in the process ultimately took away from their scare factor.

Runners-up would be the thing from Midnight and the Vashta Nerada, whom I liked in theory but not so much in practice. (Shadows are scary. Lumbering plastic skeletons in space suits are not.)

Holy fuck, I just scroll down and SURPRISE WEEPING ANGELS ARE COMING FOR YOU~! D8 Though I do agree with what you said about them in s5, they were much less scary there. (Also scared of the Vashta Nerada. I was scared of the dark for the longest time, so they just give me nightmares.)

The Master totally did it for the lulz. I can see that.

MUAHAHA. ANYTHING THAT HOLDS THE IMAGE OF AN ANGEL BECOMES AN ANGEL

Yeah no but seriously, I didn't really notice while watching the episodes, but once people started pointing out all the ways that Blink makes no sense with TOA/F&S, it became impossible for me to unsee it. When it was first announced they would be in s5 I thought it was a bad idea because I thought they would work better as a one-off, and I still think that is correct. Oh well.

I thought the Vashta Nerada were so cool... until they started possessing skeletons. There's just nothing scary to me about a villain chasing people at like the slowest pace possible with a fake-looking skull. I thought it worked much better when it was just the shadows/count the shadows/etc.

TOTALLY.

D8>

It actually made Blink much less scary, and I LOVED the angel two-parter in s5 so I can't complain.
fauxkarenfauxkaren on July 21st, 2010 02:18 am (UTC)
To me the creature from "Midnight" is terrifying because we never see it or know what it is. Fear of the unknown.
Kali: dw :: ten :: five years of my life_thirty2flavors on July 21st, 2010 02:36 am (UTC)
Midnight was probably the only other creepy episode, but its creepiness doesn't stem entirely from the monster itself so IDK I guess I thought it was a bit lower (because "HUMANS ARE ASSHOLES" doesn't really count as a villain). But yes, it is very creepy -- especially the paralysis and the voice-stealing and whatnot.

There really is no contest is there? He just wins.
Kali: dw :: FROLICKING ON GALLIFREY_thirty2flavors on July 21st, 2010 03:15 am (UTC)
Yeah there's basically none. None of the other villains are even remotely developed, lirl.

nnngghh that gif of the Weeping Angels D: D: I have to admit though, the only thing that creeps me out more than them are the Cybermen. When they did the whole Cybermen factory setup in S2 I legit freaked the fuck out and I haven't been able to handle them since. x_x
Kali_thirty2flavors on July 21st, 2010 03:18 am (UTC)
The Cyberman factory is pretty creepy and if I stop long enough to think about the Cyberman thing it's kind of creepy, but the Cybermen themselves are so useless. And then I watched Torchwood, and...

juliet316: Torchwood: Ianto Gunjuliet316 on July 21st, 2010 03:33 am (UTC)
And yet despite the cheese, Cyberwoman is probably my favorite Torchwood episode. I attribute it to the way Garett David Lloyd sold Inato's devotion to Lisa in that episode.

I totally love that his motivation is JUST TO PISS OFF THE DOCTOR IN THE MOST RIDICULOUS WAY POSSIBLE. Oh, Master. ♥

It's like... IDK, some of the Who baddies have really ridiculous and flimsy motives and it feels like bad writing. The Master's motivation feels like EPIC WRITING.

The angels made me jump in Blink (and sometimes still do) but they've sort of lost any fear factor (aside from me being REALLY FUCKING JUMPY) whereas Midnight is the one that CREEPS ME OUT AHHHHHH.
Kali: dw :: last of the time lords :: BFF4EVA_thirty2flavors on July 21st, 2010 03:20 am (UTC)
LOL BASICALLY

Yeah most of them are totally 1-D. He's the only one who is remotely interesting tbh. I mean I like the Daleks, but dynamic characters they are not.

Midnight is creepy but the humans account for part of that creepiness, not just whatever is possessing Evil JKR. So IDK. And I guess "are you my mummy?" would've been creepy if I'd watched it properly the first time.
Catey: Doctor Who: Ten point 3dbeingfacetious on July 21st, 2010 03:20 am (UTC)
Agreed on both counts! Especially the Master, whom I loooove.

I just started the Who meme today; I'm going to feel so repetitive.
Kali: dw :: master :: i approve_thirty2flavors on July 21st, 2010 03:42 am (UTC)
The Master is a lot of fun. I was glad he was in EOT, he (well, him and the Time Lords Victorious) was a much better ~final villain~ for Ten than anything else would've been.

I couldn't resist doing it even though all these answers are going to surprise no one, lol
juliet316: Torchwood: Queen and Countryjuliet316 on July 21st, 2010 03:38 am (UTC)
I think "Are you my Mummy" creeps me out the most. Not to say that the Angels don't do that as well, but the whole creepy atmosphere in The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances, especially in the former, just chills me each and every time I watch it. It's really stood the (relatively short) test of time. In Moff's case his first Who eps really are the best of the lot.

I love the Master as a Villian, but I think Yvonne Hartmann could have given him a run for his money had she not been killed off so easily in Doomsday.
Kali: dw :: amy/rory :: a dawdler_thirty2flavors on July 21st, 2010 03:57 am (UTC)
I saw those episodes all messed up (I was streaming, and didn't realize at the time the way two-parters were marked, so when 'Empty Child' didn't load I went straight on to 'The Doctor Dances', watched it in confusion, and then wound up going backwards later to watch 'Empty Child') so they've never ahd the proper effect on me, unfortunately. I think they would have been very creepy if I saw it in the right order the first time, though.

Haha Yvonne Hartman. She was one of the better ones, but she never really got the chance to be fleshed out at all.
juliet316: Torchwood: Queen and Countryjuliet316 on July 21st, 2010 04:00 am (UTC)
Oh I hate when that happenes. I've done that a few times, and your right, the cliffhanger never has the proper effect if you don't see it in order.

Indeed. Which is why I've got a few fics plotting/in progress where she was never upgraded or Doomsday never occured.
morneamornea on July 21st, 2010 03:47 am (UTC)
But the Master is still great, mostly because his entire mission in life seems to be "piss off the Doctor"

LOL. And it's so SATISFYING when he does just this. :D I love the Master, especially this last incarnation. Awesomeness.

IA about the Angels, too. When I'm introducing Who to a newbie, I usually sit them down with "Blink" first. Blink made me JUMP in a few spots.
Kali: dw :: time & relative dimension in space_thirty2flavors on July 21st, 2010 04:03 pm (UTC)
lol ikr, his entire motive is "for the lulz"

Blink was my first episode and as you can see it worked VERY WELL, lirl. Not that any other episode is anything like Blink, but it created enough initial interest for me to check out the others. And I was so charmed by the camp and the characters that I forgot I had initially gone to see it for the creepy.
morneamornea on July 22nd, 2010 01:27 am (UTC)
Out of curiosity, what ep did you watch next? I was captured by the creepy in "Midnight" though I think my next involved giant rhino men on the moon, lol. (loved both). I'd seen old who when I was a kid-- but that hooked me into nuWho.
Kali: dw :: rose :: not with a bang_thirty2flavors on July 22nd, 2010 02:59 am (UTC)
I watched "Rose" next, I jumped straight back to the beginning. I was hooked by "End of the World".

Yep, I completely agree, and I think this is why he is also my favorite villain. :D

I also agree on the Weeping Angels, they worked so well in Blink, that it's hard to see how they could possibly repeat that impact. Also, I was under the impression that there were only four, but whatever.
Kali: dw :: act :: one two three_thirty2flavors on July 21st, 2010 04:09 pm (UTC)
Yeah, there were only supposed to be four -- and Sally had a photo of them and it didn't anything ~eeevil~, not to mention she and Larry stared at them for a long time, and and and basically none of the canon makes any sense. Which is standard for this show but a bit disappointing since the Angels were at one point scary and interesting, lirl.
Adi: doctor and masteradiofir on July 21st, 2010 10:33 am (UTC)
I have only really seen John Simm in the role, unless you count Eric Roberts

You're not missing out on anything, imo. Delgado!master vs three is so.. bland, compared to simm!master vs ten.

Delgado!master - "my dear chap, I'm afraid I'm going to have to kill you now"

Three - "no my dear chap, I shall foil your evil plan"

vs
Ten, with longing "master..."

Simm!master, teasingly- "oooh I love it when you say my name" and "are you asking me out on a date?"

No contest

And yes, weeping angels are the scariest villains on dw.
Kali: dw :: FROLICKING ON GALLIFREY_thirty2flavors on July 21st, 2010 04:11 pm (UTC)
LOL LOl

Yeahhh Classic Who isn't very high up on my to-watch list, tbh. I know some Classic fans didn't like John Simm's Master, but having no prior knowledge I just thought he was awesome.
