is that a stormtrooper?

Because I have zero connection to the HIMYM fandom I very, very rarely run across anything that can be considered a spoiler, so aside from the vague hints in previous episodes, I pretty much watched the whole thing like

and then when it ended, I was like

I mean, if someone had given me a test, and the question was, "Barney and Robin will break up because:
a) Neither of them can handle commitment
b) They fight too much
c) Neither of them is looking for a long-term relationship in the first place
d) A, B & C
e) They get fat/ugly and stop having sex"

I... would not have chosen E. Just saying.

I mean, I don't consider myself particularly invested in Barney/Robin, but as far as break-up episodes go, this one was just awkward more than anything else. It was neither emotional nor funny, save a few, random lines that had nothing to do with the actual plot.

Also, I would like to pass a motion to retire the fat suit from sitcoms and low-budget comedy movies. The fat suit is never funny. Stop trying to make the fat suit happen. It's not going to happen.

It seems like a shame beacuse -- save the doppelganger episode, which, aside from the doppelgangers, was totally boring and forgettable -- this season has been awesome. Also, the prospect of Barney and Robin Ross-and-Rachel-ing it for like, the remainder of the show's existence?

In sum, because this gif is always relevant:

On the other hand, whooo Doctor Who this weekend!

Same here. Today, however, I have to add, "Apart from this post." DX I don't have cable, and I've been slowly catching up with HIMYM, but I've been reading your reviews of the new episodes to keep up with new developments (I like to be informed). I wasn't surprised Barney and Robin got together, but I AM surprised they broke up, and in such a way! :((((( This is one spoiler I wish I didn't know...

It was definitely one of the worst episodes, yeah. I dunno, the arc was handled pretty well up until this point, which is what I think made it so jarring and weird. And it started off okay and then quickly veered off track into horrible. I dunno.

I need to ask - what is How I met Your Mother. Does it worth to watch?
Kali: himym :: the whole gang_thirty2flavors on November 10th, 2009 08:36 pm (UTC)
LOL Well last night's episode has left a lot of people pretty disinterested in the show I think.

But beyond that I'd say yes, the first four seasons -- especially the third and fourth -- are awesome. It's essentially a sitcom about five friends living in NYC, and it's set in present day, but it's narrated by the main character, Ted, from 2030, telling his kids the story of how he met their mother.

I'm fond of HIMYM, and of the characters, but I can't ever see getting heavily invested in that ship, or any ship. For that matter, I guess I don't understand anyone getting heavily invested in a sitcom ship at all, because if you're expecting it to be handled with a deft touch and some realism, you're bound to be disappointed. (Although I suppose there are some exceptions.)

Odds are, getting heavily invested in ANY television ship is gonna lead to heartache for the fan, but at least on a drama, there's a small probability that one member of the couple will live happily ever after in another universe with the part-human clone of the other, am I right?
Kali: lulz :: ad/dw :: don't do it again_thirty2flavors on November 10th, 2009 08:45 pm (UTC)
Most of the television I watch are sitcoms/comedies, and most of the television I watch, I don't really care one way or the other about ships. I'd probably classify HIMYM under that heading, too. I wouldn't say I ship Barney/Robin so much as I don't mind Barney/Robin, I just think with relationship drama they always have the option of either trying to be marginally emotional (and I say "marginally" because a sitcom making me particularly emotional is incredibly unlikely) or really funny, and this hit some weird chord that wasn't really either of those things. I wouldn't've minded, if I thought it was funny. But I didn't.
unfolded73unfolded73 on November 10th, 2009 08:52 pm (UTC)
I've always felt the same way about Barney/Robin - I don't mind them together, but I also wouldn't mind them not together. It never actually occurred to me that they were ... shippable? Until I saw squee-filled posts on my flist about them, that is.
michele: himym; EYES HEREmiss_mishi on November 10th, 2009 09:12 pm (UTC)
I was like this the whole episode as they switched back and forth from barney and robin to marshall ted and lily, respectively:

And then at the end I was like:

I've always been a BroTP fan, but if BroTP leads to fatsuits, then bring on single barney and robin!

As long as they don't ross/rachel it.
Kali: himym :: robin :: let's go to the mall_thirty2flavors on November 11th, 2009 01:07 am (UTC)
THe thing is I don't see why BroTP led to fatsuits aside from apparently someone at CBS being lik "YOU KNOW WHAT IS ALWAYS FUNNY??? FAT PEOPLE!! LOL!!!!" There are like a million better ways they could've ended Barney/Robin that would've made more sense.

I wouldn't mind if they got together towards the end of the season or whatever, but if they do the Ross/Rachel JD/Elliot thing, OMG I am so done.

Wait so Barney and Robin aren't together ~in the future~?

Man, I don't even WATCH this show, but pretend my question made sense.
Kali_thirty2flavors on November 11th, 2009 01:07 am (UTC)
Well they broke up, but who knows, they could do what every other sitcom couple does and get back together later on. Future Ted just calls them "aunt Robin" and "uncle Barney" but that doesn't really suggest anything one way or the other.
alephlacunaz on November 10th, 2009 10:16 pm (UTC)
I liked the idea of Barney/Robin when it was all just a idea, but the execution really sucked for me so I was happy they broke up.

I dunno there have been some good moments but overall this season has been kinda

for me.
Kali: himym :: bitch please_thirty2flavors on November 11th, 2009 01:10 am (UTC)
LIRL It's funny you say that because I have found this season thorouhgly hilarious, with very few down points, one of them being this episode (and one being that one with the doppelgangers? I don't even remember what happened aside from the doppelgangers becaues they were the only good part).

I don't really care much about Barney/Robin one way or the other, I just think they could've broken them up in an episode that sucked less.
Frances: Buffy - drink?goldy_dollar on November 10th, 2009 10:56 pm (UTC)
After "GOD THAT BLEW," I was kind of like "eh, new Doctor Who coming up!"

I don't love Barney/Robin like I love Doctor/Rose, but I was really enjoying them together this season (episodes like "Dual Citizenship" and last week's were some of the show's most hilarious), but then the writers were like "FORGET ALL THAT FUN THEY'VE BEEN HAVING, THEY HAVE STOPPED HAVING SEX AND GOT UGLY." Which... wtf.

I really love the show, but man did my interest take a sharp nosedive at "Being with Robin made Barney fat so now he must return to his douche bag womanizing ways. ISN'T THIS HILARIOUS." Yeah... it's not.

Kali: himym :: the vicky mendoza diagonal_thirty2flavors on November 11th, 2009 01:13 am (UTC)
I think the first gift I used is pretty much the most accurate representation of how I felt the whole time. I've never been excessively fan-y towards this show but it is my favourite that's airing right now, so it'd be nice if... it... didn't suck. I mean, I will grant them one bad episode, but... eh. This season was so good until now! Although apparently not everyone agrees.

Tha's the other thing, it felt like "THEY AREN'T HAVING FUN AND THEY HATE THEIR LIVES" came out of nowhere. And yeah, if they negate any and all attempts at making Barney anything other than completely 2D, I will not be impressed. Don't pull a Big Bang Theory, HIMYM!

Liz: Office: jim/pam weddingbazcat89 on November 11th, 2009 01:10 am (UTC)
If they pull typical sitcom Ross Rachel shit I am going to scream.

Although, it's a rare sitcom that can do OTPs well, so nice try, HIMYM.
Kali: himym :: marshall :: dazzled_thirty2flavors on November 11th, 2009 01:17 am (UTC)
The thing is I don't even get if like... they're supposed to be the Ross/Rachel or the Joey/Rachel. IDK which will piss me off more. I mean, Ross/Rachel was AIGHWIOTHIAOTHOWT, but Joey/Rachel was like "omg why did you even introduce this plotline if you were going to drop it like a hot potato".

I've always figured the real/only OTP of HIMYM is Marshall/Lily.
Liz: Office: Jim/Pam handicapped BR of ~love~bazcat89 on November 11th, 2009 01:26 am (UTC)
I just hate willtheywon'tthey bullshit.

It's weird, they treated Ted/Robin in an OTP kind of way, even thoug it's not.....whatever, himym.
Kali_thirty2flavors on November 11th, 2009 01:28 am (UTC)

UGH TED/ROBIN. WHY DID THEY KEEP TRYING TO MAKE IT HAPPEN. D:
Lizbazcat89 on November 11th, 2009 01:32 am (UTC)
It had all the trappings of an OTP.

I wonder if they had the Barney/Robin thing planned; that way they could have avoided pulling out all the stops for Ted/Robin.
Austinjohnmayergirl23 on November 11th, 2009 01:24 am (UTC)
, the prospect of Barney and Robin Ross-and-Rachel-ing it for like, the remainder of the show's existence?
LOL WHUT, HIMYM ISN'T LIKE FRIENDS AT ALL, WHY WOULD YOU SAY THAT? No, but seriously, I'ma cut a bitch if they become obnoxious like Ross and Rachel.

I didn't even watch last night's episode because I'm so far behind, but it seems terrrrrrrible. And I've been thoroughly enjoying this season so far. Hrmph.
Kali: himym :: marshall :: THE STAR WARS_thirty2flavors on November 11th, 2009 01:28 am (UTC)
I can't tell if you're being sarcastic. Are you? Either way, the Ross/Rachel trope (is that a TV Trope? I thsould be) always makes me think of this:

JD/Elliot sucked too, but at least they were self-aware.
Austinjohnmayergirl23 on November 11th, 2009 01:34 am (UTC)
Oh, no, I was totally being sarcastic. Because comparing HIMYM to Friends is one of those ~unspoken~ things that One Just Does Not Do (even though everyone thinks it.)

I was so over Ross/Rachel by...the fifth season? I was so into it when it first began (OMG, like when she found the pro-con list and then the prom video and all that?!), but I got sick of it easily. They were obviously going to get together eventually, so I just ignored it. I was all about the Chandler/Monica love.

EW GOD, JD/ELLIOT. So boring. Bring on Dr. Cox/Jordan, tyvm.
Kali: scrubs :: smells like father figure_thirty2flavors on November 11th, 2009 01:38 am (UTC)
I think you are more into Friends than I ever was because I watched it casually and have no idea about any of your references LIRL. Though "WE WERE ON A BREAKKKK" is part of my cultural vocabulary forever.

Ugh JD/Elliot. I love that part where Carla, Jordan, Turk and Dr Cox are like "we don't need to talk about you getting together with JD, whenever we start to think about it, we can just remember a conversation we had about it last time, and that's that."

You've seen the Charlie Brown Scrubs thing right?
Austinjohnmayergirl23 on November 11th, 2009 01:46 am (UTC)
I was pretty into Friends for a while. In s3, I think, Ross keeps trying to get with Rachel, and she's about to give in when she finds this pro-con list he'd made about her and Julie (the girl he was dating), and it said things like "she's just a waitress" for Rachel, which really upset Rache, duh. So she tells Ross to forget about it. SO SAD. (And then later, there's this part where Monica and Rachel watch their high school prom video, and ... well, let me find a clip.

AND THEN I CRIED. Sometime after season 6, though, I kind of gave up on watching it regularly. And when Rachel got pregnant I was very ... eh.

I'm a very casual Scrubs watcher. I haven't seen any of the recent seasons. Unless they're playing on Comedy Central, I haven't seen them. Though I love Scrubs.

NO. What is this you speak of?
Kali: scrubs :: can't do this all on my own_thirty2flavors on November 11th, 2009 02:00 am (UTC)
I think some distant part of my brain remembers that. LIRL Ross/Rachel was just dragged out for way too long.

OMG THE SCRUBS THING. They made it for a cast Christmas party circa season 3 and I guess it's on a DVD or something because now it's online:

Last year in our friend secret santa, I gave the guy I got a season of Scrubs (because he likes it) and wrote out Dr Cox's entire meaning-of-Christmas speech in the card.
