Square Root of Who Cares

Explain to me why people find math so important, when we've got machines that will do it for us. What's the point of having calculators and computers, if we're still required to take a million different math classes? Not to mention, I have trouble in, math, yet because I'm in Biomedical Technology, they (whoever THEY are) thought it best to put everyone in that class in SAT/ACT Prep. For those of you who don't know what that is, it's another math class, except it's on a 12th grade level... two years above me. If I can hardly do math that's on my level, how am I expected to be able to do math that's harder than that?

Why is it that black people always feel that they're being attacked, or treated different because of their race, when they attend a school that is primarily an African American school? We had a thirty minute conversation in Biomed Tech today, about how everyone's grades were falling lately, and they think it's because the teacher is teaching on too high of a level. They said that they were being treated like they went to a school like Terry Sanford, or some other 'white school' -their words, not mine- and that the teachers needed to realize that they weren't as smart as people at those schools are. Sound stupid? That's what I thought. I didn't voice any of my opinions out loud, of course, but I really felt like telling them to grow up. It doesn't matter what race you are, it matters that you actually put some effort into what you're doing. I guarantee you that over half of my class has never once picked up any of the notes my teacher provides at home. I'm not saying that I'm a big studier, but I'm not complaining about the level I'm being taught. They don't like that they now have to exert themselves academically. I try to see it they're way, I really do... but it's not working.
