Canadian Club Whisky recently came out with an ad campaign using slogans like, "Your Mom Wasn't Your Dad's First", "Your Dad Was Not A Metrosexual", "Your Dad Had A Van For A Reason", concluding, "DAMN RIGHT YOUR DAD DRANK IT."
Apparently the 70s are what we now look to as the last heyday of unconflicted masculinity, which just goes to show that in a generation's time, people can put a romantic gloss over anything. Or maybe an awareness of gender anxiety is built into the nostalgic machismo: in those days, men really knew how to aggressively ignore challenges to the patriarchy!
Keep the whisky flowing and you too can pick up "effortless" chicks every night.
* There have been lots of responses to the campaign, but the fun really took off once Michelle Schwartz made a template that let people put together their own ads in the same style. Thus, Project Canadian Club, a series of excellent parodies turning the message inside out.
