closing a chapter

in motion
Oh hello there!  I haven't forgotten about this online journaling stuff.  In fact, I'm finally getting to the point where I'm ready to start anew.

But for now, I'm just poking my head up on Livejournal to share some news -- I'm stepping down as an editor of Strange Horizons.

Even though I've been coming to this decision for a while, I find myself really emotional about announcing it now.  Working at Strange Horizons has been an extraordinary, life-changing experience, and a huge part of my world for a very long time.  It's time for me to move on, but I'm still wistful about closing that chapter of my life, and I will miss it dearly.  To all of you who've been a part of that, as readers and writers, I thank you with all my heart.  Let's forge onward and create new wondrous things.

This makes me sad :(
But I hope it's an excellent thing for self-care and you get to have spoons to spend on you! *hugs*

Honestly, I get a vicarious adrenaline rush whenever a friend announces a big life change. I'm excited to see how this decision will change the shape of your life. I'm particularly excited that it might mean more time for you to blog and write... or even just relax. In any case, congratulations for taking the step -- I'm sure it's even harder than I can imagine. As always, you rock.

I know just what you mean about the rush -- there is something innately freeing about witnessing (or going through) change. I may be a bit of a fool stepping off a cliff here, but I am trusting my instincts to take this leap of faith that I will land in good new places.

!!!!
Wow! Ditto everyone. You are a terrific editor with a terrific mind. It is a testament to the talent, maturity and strength of purpose of the whole SH fiction triumvirate that I mostly feel like it was always a matter of being edited by a group mind, though there were moments in which a glimpse of each individual would be revealed as a separate agency (usually when emails revealed specifics of dissenting opinions about something).

I too am eager to see what you do next!

Re: !!!!
Thanks, Ben. Coming from such a keen story critiquer as yerself, that's quite a compliment. Apart from rare moments like what you mention, there was never any group-mind editing in the SH fiction triumvirate -- we've operated independently in that arena and if I'd been your editor, believe me, you would have known it -- but I've definitely had fun working on your stuff outside of the magazine!
