this is really great.

Israel: Feminist combats the Army
Anat Cohen
5/6/2006

MAN Chalili, 19, is the first woman in Israel who has refused to enlist in the army. Her reason? It is against her feminist beliefs. Chalili declared in November 2005 that she will not do the mandatory military service on grounds of her feminist beliefs and conscience. Her daring act raised a lot of eyebrows; stirred a nationwide debate; but eventually won her an exemption from military service.
In Israel, every girl enlists in the military service after high school and devotes two years of her life to military duties. Only orthodox religious girls are exempt from the service. (This is because Orthodox Judaism believes that girls cannot serve in the military in the company of men.) These girls sign an official declaration in court and the exemption note is sent to them by mail.
Girls who hold pacifist views have to go through a Conscience Committee, authorised to grant or deny conscientious objectors exemptions from service. Before Chalili, no woman was granted this exemption.
Chalili, an activist with the Tel Aviv-based Feminist Women's House, a women's rights advocacy NGO, refused to enrol in the army not only because she found the army a patriarchal institution, but also because she firmly believes that she cannot serve an organisation where sexual harassment is endemic.
Chalili wrote to the army in her request for exemption: "A strongly patriarchal institution like the army underlines female marginality, on the one hand, and the superiority of male-identified values on the other. It might be said that a mood of sexual harassment is endemic to a patriarchal and hierarchical organisation like the army. And so, the demand that a woman enlist is tantamount to demanding that she cope with sexual harassment within an environment that encourages such harassment. "
She further wrote: "Since the army is such a central institution in society, a culture of sexual harassment also is exported to and further entrenched in civic society. 1, as a feminist, feel I must avoid military service and act to limit and reduce the influence of the army on civic society."
Chalili argued that "when men spend a formative period of their lives in the military they are likely to receive positive reinforcements for the use of brute power and violence, and to develop an indifferent attitude to the use of 'mild' forms of violence. In an organisation whose main values include superiority and control, these behaviours are likely to be encouraged in the specific professional military activities, but also in interpersonal relations. I cannot join an organisation which, either directly or indirectly, encourages violence - of any form and kind - against women".
Chalili added that she could not join an organisation that, either directly or indirectly, encourages violence - of any form and kind - against women. "Army service would impose a way of life on me that is deeply contrary to my values and moral beliefs. I cannot live in such flagrant denial of my conscience."
However, the army authorities were not impressed by her strong views. Chalili was briefly interviewed by the head of the women's section at the main induction centre, where she spent a night before being transferred to military prison near Tel Aviv in November 2005.
On her way to the jail, Chalili was accompanied by over 50 supporters, men and women, who distributed leaflets to the public, and explained the connection between the Palestinian Occupation, militarism and sexism in Israeli society. Some of the signs held by supporters read: 'We won't serve the patriarchy'; 'The army teaches chauvinism'; 'Feminists don't serve sexism'; 'We're women who refuse to be enemies', and 'The army imprisons conscience'. Slogans called out included: 'Not a fighter, not a clerk, army harasses girls'; 'Won't serve coffee, no, no I won't go'.
Chalili's main supporters came from NGOs like the New Profile, the High School Seniors, the Feminist Women's House and the Refusers' Parents' Forum - all pacifist NGOs that focus on social issues rather than on security in wartime. They called on Israeli authorities to uphold Chalili's human right to freedom of feminist conscience. Hundreds of letters were sent to the Defence Minister Shaul Mofaz, calling him to free Chalili and grant her an immediate exemption from military service.
Bowing to public pressure, the authorities finally released Chalili on December 27, 2005. This was the first time that the Israeli army acknowledged feministic ideology as a valid ground for military exemption.
Professor Hana Nave, Head of Gender Studies in the Tel Aviv University is proud of the young feminist's courage to follow her beliefs. "Most girls who enlist in the army," says Nave, "are given worthless, belittling tasks such as serving coffee to male officers. Such tasks invite abuse against women and eternalise women's position in society as secondary to men. Chalili's refusal to enlist is actually a refusal to cooperate with traditional chauvinistic concepts."
Ya'ara Hozen, from the Feminist Women's House, finds Chalill's move as both brave and naYve. "Her protest," says Hozen, "enfolds sort of an idealistic naively: an innocent belief that you can change society. Now, our goal in the Feminist Women's House is to verify that Chalili's brave deed will not become a passing episode. I won't be surprised if others, young Israeli women and men, will be inspired by Chalili's fight against the army and follow her."

somewhere i have never travelled, gladly beyond
any experience, your eyes have their silence:
in your most frail gesture are things which enclose me,
or which i cannot touch because they are too near

your slightest look easily will unclose me
though i have closed myself as fingers,
you open always petal by petal myself as Spring opens
(touching skilfully, misteriously) her first rose

or if your wish be to close me, i and
my life will shut very beautifully, suddenly,
as when the heart of this flower imagines
the snow carefully everywhere descending;

nothing we are to perceive in this world equals
the power of your intense fragility: whose texture
compels me with the colour of its countries,
rendering death and forever with each breathing

(i do not know what it is about you that closes
and opens; only something in me understands
the voice of your eyes is deeper than all roses)
nobody, not even the rain, has such small hands

"When Governor Mike Rounds signed HB 1215 into law it effectively banned all abortions in the state with the exception that it did allow saving the mother’s life. There were, however, no exceptions for victims of rape or incest. His actions, and the comments of State Senators like Bill Napoli of Rapid City, SD, set of a maelstrom of protests within the state.

Napoli suggested that if it was a case of “simple rape,” there should be no thoughts of ending a pregnancy. Letters by the hundreds appeared in local newspapers, mostly written by women, challenging Napoli’s description of rape as “simple.” He has yet to explain satisfactorily what he meant by “simple rape.”

The President of the Oglala Sioux Tribe on the Pine Ridge Reservation, Cecilia Fire Thunder, was incensed. A former nurse and healthcare giver she was very angry that a state body made up mostly of white males, would make such a stupid law against women.

“To me, it is now a question of sovereignty,” she said to me last week. “I will personally establish a Planned Parenthood clinic on my own land which is within the boundaries of the Pine Ridge Reservation where the State of South Dakota has absolutely no jurisdiction.”

i don't even know if i can donate $$$, but to those who can:

Oglala Sioux Tribe
ATTN: President Fire Thunder
P.
president bush's phonecall to the participants in the March For Life.

Via Telephone
12:40 P.M. EST
THE PRESIDENT: Nellie, thank you very much. I appreciate the invitation to speak. I'm calling from Manhattan, Kansas. (Applause.) Sounds like you got some good folks from Kansas there. (Applause.) I want to thank everybody there -- if you're from Kansas, or anywhere else in our country, for your devotion to such a noble cause.

You believe, as I do, that every human life has value, that the strong have a duty to protect the weak, and that the self-evident truths of the Declaration of Independence apply to everyone, not just to those considered healthy or wanted or convenient. These principles call us to defend the sick and the dying, persons with disabilities and birth defects, all who are weak and vulnerable, especially unborn children. (Applause.)

We're making good progress in defending these principles, Nellie, and you and I are working together, along with others, to build what I've called a culture of life. One of my first acts as the President was to ban the use of taxpayer money on programs that promote abortion overseas. (Applause.) I want to thank you all for getting that ban on partial-birth abortion to my desk, a bill I was proud to sign -- (applause) -- and a law which we are going to defend -- and are defending -- vigorously in our courts. Because we acted, infants who are born despite an attempted abortion are now protected by law. Thanks to "Laci and Conner's Law," prosecutors can now charge those who harm or kill a pregnant woman with harming or killing her unborn child, as well. (Applause.)

We're vigorously promoting parental notification laws, adoption, teen abstinence, crisis pregnancy programs, and the vital work of our faith-based groups. We're sending a clear message to any woman facing a crisis pregnancy: We love you, we love your child, and we're here to help you.

There's more work to be done. The House has passed a bill to ensure that state parental involvement laws are not circumvented by those who take minors across state lines to have abortions. And the United States Senate needs to pass this bill so I can sign it into law. (Applause.)

We also must respect human life and dignity when advancing medical science, and we're making progress here, as well. Last month, I signed a pro-life bill supporting ethical treatment and research using stem cells from umbilical cord blood. I also renew my call for Congress to ban all forms of human cloning. Because human life is a gift from our Creator and should never be used as a means to an end, we will not sanction the creation of life only to destroy it.

By changing laws we can change our culture. And your persistence and prayers, Nellie, and the folks there with you, are making a real difference. We, of course, seek common ground where possible; we're working to persuade more of our fellow Americans of the rightness of our cause. And this is a cause that appeals to the conscience of our citizens, and is rooted in America's deepest principles -- and history tells us that with such a cause, we will prevail.

Again, Nellie, thank you for letting me come to speak to you. Tell everybody there that I ask for God's blessings on them and their families, and, of course, may God continue to bless our grand country. (Applause.)
