10th September - WW Freelancer Visiting Wayland's Forge, Brum
I plan on dropping by Wayland's Forge, in Birmingham, UK, next week on the 10th of September. If Gangrel: Savage and Macabre is available then, whoopee. Likewise, if Witch Finders is going to be available there. My point being, I'll be there to answer any questions people might have about Hunter: the Vigil. This is just to let everyone know. I'll be planning on a similar trip around the 8th of October to Manchester's Fan Boy 3 for the release of Night Terrors: Grim Fears, another book I want to get a copy of for myself. Further information closer to the day. X-posted to wod_hunter, fiat_knox. Current Location: shedCurrent Mood: chipper Current Music: nowt

will this week ever end?
RIP Jerry Reed. I loved you as Cledus in the Smokeu and the Bandit movies and I loved your music. I saw the first 2 episodes of the new 90210 last night, and I am only slightly ashamed to say that I really, really liked it. ( cut for spoilers )Is it bad that I have been laughing at the Republicans all week? Well, that and gaping in slack-jawed disbelief at some of the things they are saying. Is it just me, or has their whole convention so far seemed awfully lackluster? Empty seats (and it's a smaller venue to begin with), lukewarm cheers, if any, people in the audience looking dazed. And Palin's speech last night was nowhere near the barn burner is was being touted to be. She had cloistered herself in her hotel room since Sunday "practicing" and that's what she came up with? Dude, taking a public speaking class!! I thought she was an on-air television news personality (I refuse to call her a journalist) at some point? And the speech itself was completely non-substantive. She didn't mention the middle class, she didn't mention health care! She was just snarky and insulting. Oy. The slow, measured "Sunday School Teacher" voice and the little cutesy nose wrinkle (which she does ALL THE TIME) are just too much. And the line about the pit bull and the lipstick makes me ashamed she's a woman. Can we revoke her ovaries, please? I must say, though, that my favorite part was when the camera showed the littlest girl licking her hand and grooming the baby! Although, I was very perturbed that the baby was there at all. That's too much noise and flashing lights for a baby that little. And the look of pure "sideways, down your nose" disdain that Mama McCain gave the children when they stood for applause was fabulous. Also, my favorite line of the speech: "We need more American sources...of resources!" Yeah...okay. Oh, and did anyone else notice that John wasn't wearing a flag lapel pin when they trotted him out last night? Scandalous! Our storage room at work is a complete disaster and hazard. They've got things piled up so high, it's like walking through a hedge maze. One day I will disappear, and they will find my bloated, rotting corpse trapped under an avalanche of boxes. Oh, and one last thing...BOYS SUCK!!

Help with creation of D&D 3.5 / Pathfinder weapon
Below are some plans for a unique weapon in the D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder game systems. I need help to see if it makes sense. The jist of the weapon is to have a flail attached to a light crossbow in a way that you could use it for a bashing weapon if out of ammo OR detach the flail completely with such swiftness that it will only take a partial action in a combat round to detach and still be able to beat someone up. The other thing is that this player wants to use 2 of them at a time... so how long should it take to detach two flails from the light crossbows; AND can you finesse the latching mechanisms in a way that would allow you to detach completely with just a trigger and no other hands needed? so is this feasible? --------------------------------------
Plans for Revised Crossbow-Flail Combo Weapon:
Player wants to rework his signature weapon so that the flail chain is kept completely out of the way when he's not using it, but he has instant access to it when he wants to use it (in game terms, he wouldn't need to expend an action to ready the flail).
The stock of the crossbow is slightly thicker than normal and hollowed out. The flail chain is anchored to the top of a spring-loaded piston. The piston's spring is in turn anchored to the interior back end of the stock. A locking mechanism holds the piston in place with the spring compressed, and while the lock is engaged, the flail chain is fully contained within the stock. The flail's spiked ball sits at the front exterior of the stock when the chain is retracted. An external trigger releases the lock; when released, the spring extends, and the piston pushes the flail chain forward. At full extension, the flail chain sticks out the from the front of the stock at the same length that a normal flail's chain does from its handle. A small, external turning wheel retracts the piston, compressing the spring and drawing the flail chain back inside the stock; once fully retracted, the locking mechanism can be engaged. The mechanisms for the crossbow are on the top side of the stock, the trigger for the piston is on the bottom, and the turning wheel on the side. The firing of the crossbow is unaffected by the flail chain being retracted or extended.

One day I'll do an in depth post
What do you do when your name matches someone in the news? Set up a fake blog about the person, of course!
As someone who regularly has a couple dozen tabs open at any given moment, I'm curious to see how Chrome performs insofar as the back end changes. Looks great in Aero, windexcowboy reports that it's not so pretty in XP. Will it handle the kingfox load? We'll find out tonight.
At the post-handout pre-handout party annual BBQ dinner, we had a seating arrangement problem that jasonio ended up solving. He, his wife, windexcowboy, shmivejournal, jedimentat, caniswolfie, his wife, and I were seated at a table. While keeping couples together, people had to be re-seated so that four of us were close enough to have the fatty platter, in as few moves as possible. jasonio did it in only three, which should make his algorithms professor happy. shmivejournal joked about it being bubble sort, which left me cracking up the rest of the dinner. Excerpt from A Good and Happy Child
This weekend I read A Good and Happy Child by Justin Evans. A review in the Express caught my eye, which I promptly forgot about. Later, iheartschnickle said she read the same article and the description reminded her of something I'd like. Before I could forget again, I put it on hold at the library. I read it this weekend, and while I have my objections to his first-person format and the need for some editing, it surpassed my wary expectations. The book reminds me of Frailty, and somewhat of Fallen. Christian mysticism always fascinates me, even after recovering from a Catholic upbringing. I'll leave you with this small excerpt from the first 15 pages. Tom Harris tells George Davies (the protagonist) and his mother a story about going to a Pentecostal meeting with a friend in Asian studies. "Members of the congregation came forward, starting swooning, going into trances," continued Tom Harris, kicking out his long legs, folding his arms behind his head. "Average folk in jeans and sneakers. But there they were on their knees, eyes rolling back in their heads, speaking in tongues—which, by the way, sounds just like baby talk. Gary was thrilled. Then, before I know it," Tom Harris paused, "Gary is grabbing my arm. I look at him, and he's white as a sheet. 'Let's go,' he says—and he bolts!
"I followed him to the parking lot," continued our guest, "Tom, you saw the woman near us? he asked. I had—a dark-haired woman, quite pretty. She was speaking a dialect of Cantonese that I happen to know, Gary tells me. And she was cursing the name of God up and down."
"What?" my mother exclaimed. "How could a country woman from Preston speak Chinese? And even if she could...why would she curse God in church?"
"That, my dear, is the point of the story," Tom Harris pronounced. He paused. "It was a demon." Tags: a good and happy child, books Current Mood: spooked

A survey of sorts
This would have to do with inspecting a new game with an interest towards playing/buying it. Feel free to explain your stance as much as you like in comments. Thanks in advance, guys. :) (x-posted to my own journal). ( Under here )

Just when you thought we couldn't discuss 4e any more!
Alright folks, the following I'm about to post is not something I wrote. It's actually an email from my DM that was sent to our entire gaming group, based on the events of our gaming experience this past weekend. So if you disagree with any of his points, please don't criticize me about it. :) I'm posting it because overall I want the opinions of people who have been playing 4e quite a bit and have found ways around these challenges. I will admit I agree with some of his points, but I'm not going to tell you which ones. :D ( Here are his comments, cut for length (though they're not that long) )How could we maybe solve these issues, or what about these named issues do you think he is mistaken on and how can I explain that to him? I have a more limited knowledge of the game than he does at this point, being that I haven't read all the books in entirety yet. Thanks for your help! :)
