Hellooo! We are home!! But just a quick update, as there's a lot of stuff to sort - I was hoping to get some done today, but we slept from 9:30pm until 2pm!! (It actually makes sense as 2pm here is 6am in California)
The wedding and honeymoon were wonderful, it was soooooo nice to have time off and have no ever-increasing "to do" lists! There are many many great photos of the day thanks to our talented friends =) |

Blimey, it's August tomorrow - so I thought I should post a random update =P As you may have gathered I've been really busy! Some of the things we've been up to recently:
- Became members of Shaldon Wildlife Trust and finally saw their gentle lemurs (a huge ambition when you own all of Gerald Durrell's books!)
- Discovered we need a new shower - on top of the new washing machine, oven, shed and fire =P
- Wonderful Tom boarded the loft so we could unpack and store boxes, so our house looks a lot more homelike =)
- Put liner in our very leaky pond and discovered we have 22 fish, 30 newts and various frogs and toads - goodness knows how the fish survived in 5cm of water for the last few years!!
- Got rid of a fair bit of horrible conifer hedge
- Went to the jazz concert picnic and fireworks at Bicton Park
- Read Harry Potter 7 =D
- Watched Harry Potter 5 - the quality of those films just gets better and better!
- Picked up my wedding dress, it's lovely! =DDD
- Received the best (video!) wedding RSVP ever =D
- I've started attending novice rowing sessions in Seine boats (4 people + cox)
- We took part in novice Pilot Gig racing (6 people + cox) - our team didn't do so well, but we came second in the land race (rowing machines!) and it was all great fun =)

Oh goodness me, I don't think I can cope with the cuteness!!

House stuff is progressing nicely - Tom and my parents have been putting in a LOT of work getting it cleared and cleaned due to the negligence of the previous owners (I meanwhile have been lazing around at work ;)..). Can't wait to move in properly at the weekend! |

I'd like to have an opinion on the 2012 Olympics logo but I've been staring for ages and my brain refuses to go past "what the heck is that??"
Days go by so fast! Work is frantic, house stuff is still going on (if being stretched out a bit), and I might finally be closer to getting a wedding dress and sending out my darn invitations =P I'm kind of looking forward to getting past this 'almost there' stage! |

| Bye bye customers |
[May. 14th, 2007|04:21 pm] |
Masterfoods clearly decided they're making too much money, and need to get rid of some customers:
Mars starts using animal products Some of the UK's best-selling chocolate bars, such as Mars and Twix, will no longer be suitable for vegetarians.
"If the customer is an extremely strict vegetarian, then we are sorry the products are no longer suitable, but a less strict vegetarian should enjoy our chocolate," said Paul Goalby, corporate affairs manager for Masterfoods.
Yes, because so many 'less strict' vegetarians eat cow stomach lining =P Seems a weird and somewhat backwards decision, but it's entirely their loss - there's plenty of other yummy chocolate bars out there =)
Edit: Lol - Mars bars get veggie status back |

BusyBusyBusy!!!
Last weekend was fab, on Saturday we went to my work 'annual do' at an adventure park - it was lots of fun, we got to go on rides and slides and fail to barn dance successfully ;) On Sunday our friends Andrew and Lynsey visited, and we showed them around our area and got them drenched while trying to prove how lovely the weather in Devon is ;)
I've sent off the deposit for the wedding boat, and started making invitations =)
And this weekend my parents visited - we went to view some houses, and put in a successful offer for one!! Eep!!! Lots to do still though, it's only the first step so we're trying not to get too excited about the house (not the biggest in the world, but it's in great condition and in a wonderful location, and the garden is fab!) =P
Oh and now we both have a stomach bug which is most definitely not fun =P |

| Updates and marmosets |
[Mar. 18th, 2007|10:54 am] |
- I've had an enjoyable week! Last weekend we wandered around Bath - it's such a beautiful and unique city =)
- We've also been viewing loads of houses and flats - we've seen some nice places (and some not so nice ones). Unfortunately on our budget there's always going to have to be a compromise, but it's nice to know we can get something half-decent =)
- Yesterday we went to Teignmouth to see houses, and a cute little zoo we only discovered because the description of the house said "near to the zoo" =P It has loads of endangered species rather than the classic 'crowd-pullers' and is mainly run by volunteers - we spent a very pleasant afternoon poking marmosets =)
- Ooh and I've just sent off the forms to provisionally book our wedding ceremony and reception!! If all goes to plan (fingers crossed), we're getting married in a nice place in Exeter, then having a 3 hour cruise on our local estuary for the reception =D

Trapped hamster saved by vacuum
"After the RSPCA failed to reach him, help was sought from two council wardens who tied a number of hamster ladders and Curly Wurly bars together."
That's got to be one of the strangest sentences I've ever read ;) |

| Houses |
[Mar. 3rd, 2007|09:21 pm] |
House-hunting was fun today =) We love the other side of the estuary more and more each time we visit it! Had a lovely walk on Dawlish Warren afterwards =D We looked at 1 place in Starcross (a wonderful village on the estuary) and 2 places in Dawlish, which is gorgeous:
Unfortunately because of our budget and the fact we live in Devon, we can't afford a huge amount of house ;) Ideally we'd want the location of the first flat, the amazing condition and architecture of the second flat, and the neighbourhood of the house =P
Or else someone could lend us an extra ~£30K and we could buy utter perfection: Courtenay Mews |

| DURRELL WILDLIFE CONSERVATION TRUST NOW AVAILABLE FOR WEDDINGS |
Brides and grooms looking for an excitingly different venue to host their wedding can now take their vows at Durrell, Jersey’s 31-acre wildlife haven.
The Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust is now licensed to hold weddings and has joined forces with wedding planners Chique to offer couples and their guests an unforgettable day.
The parkland owned by the trust is home to an array of endangered species including western lowland gorillas, orang-utans and black lion tamarins. The grounds also feature the imposing Les Augrés Manor – the former home of Gerald Durrell, parts of which date back to 1530.
Hehe, this would be the ultimate perfect wedding for us (shame it's completely out of the question in terms of money and logistics) XD |

Couples getting married should spend less and think green when planning their big day, according to the Church of England ...Indeed!! =P The average cost of a wedding is £17,000 (gah!!)... divide that by 8.5 and you might be somewhere near our budget ;)
We definitely don't want a big fancy wedding... But at the moment it seems to be a choice between a nice ceremony (obviously it's the important part, but then paying at least £1000 for a 30min ceremony seems ludicrous) and a nice reception (we really like the idea of hiring out a local boat on our estuary/along the coast =)..)
Still, lots of brochures are on their way to us, so I won't give up yet ;)
(By the way feel free to ignore all my wedding-related posts, it's just a good way to keep track of my planning etc. =)..)
Edit: If I go to a local business and buy a "wedding cake" - a decorated 1 tier 6 inch fruit cake - it will cost me £250..! |

| What's this mouse thingy?! |
[Jan. 30th, 2007|07:02 pm] |
Eek, I'm making the move from laptop to desktop! I love my laptop to bits, but at 5.5 years old, it's getting a little slow =P Tom bought a fancy new computer (for his work, he tells me...), so I got his castoffs and bought a nice screen (->cheaper than a new laptop) =) I'm planning to get Vista, as it's out today ;) but am currently using Linux until my bank balance looks better... I daren't see what my oekakis look like on a 'real' screen =P |

| My thoughts on animals |
[Jan. 26th, 2007|08:36 pm] |
Inspired by a post by nonickname96, I thought I'd note down some of my animal welfare related opinions - mostly for myself, plus it will be interesting to look back and compare in the future (my views now are vastly different from when I was a teenager - having now learnt to research both sides of every argument and not just swallow one-sided statistics)
I'll LJ-cut it, but please feel free to read... animal rights is definitely not a black-and-white area (particularly when mixed with a science degree =P..) =) |

- Work was fun this week - I got to go out on a boat and help save wriggly marine creatures! =D
- The cold is making the birds really tame - this morning I nearly stepped on a dunnock and a robin when I was walking down the lane to work =P
- We went up to the cliffs and saw Napoli on Saturday... Have been watching the effects worsen all this week - poor birds =(
