(Background info)
Spike, also known as William the Bloody, got his nickname due to his penchant for torturing victims with railroad spikes. However, his William the Bloody nickname has less glamorous origins — it turns out that he had the name before his vampire days, as a result of his "bloody awful poetry." William wasn't always a bad boy — prior to being vamped, he was a shy, sensitive, aspiring poet who was a devoted son to his sick mother.
In 1880, after having his heart broken by the girl who inspired his poetry Cecily, he was killed and sired by Drusilla. In his early years as a vampire, his vamp family was, Drusilla, Angelus, & Darla. They done allot of damage threw the whole of Europe. Until Angelus got cursed with a soul that is. Then it was just him and his prescious Dru for almost 100 years, until they came up against the Slayer in Sunnydale. So Drusilla was the love of his un-life for over 117 years. Only 127 years old (using the most recent evidence, "Fool For Love"), Spike has already killed at least two, maybe three Slayers. He said he tasted the blood of two slayers, yet he never tasted the blood of Nikki Wood, which would imply their was another slayer. The first Slayer he killed was a Chinese one named Xin Rong during the Boxer Rebellion on June 18th 1900, in Beijing, China. She was the one who gave him a small scar on his left eyebrow. The Book Spike and Dru: Pretty Maids All In A Row mentions the killing of a Danish Slayer. September 7th, 1940 Sophie Carstensen, Copenhagen, Denmark. And is known that he killed Nikki Wood in a Subway Train in December, 1977, New York City. It is from Nikki that he got his black leather jacket. He tried multiple times to kill Buffy Summers, the Slayer in Sunnydale in the late 1990's, but to no avail (but then again, she wasn't able to kill him either).
Buffy did leave Spike crippled after one near fatal altercation with her in a church were he had used Dru's sire Angel to help restore his prescious Drusilla back to full health. Once he recovered from his injuries and could walk again, he just wanted him and Dru to have the relationship they had for a 117 plus years, without having her annoying sod of a sire Angelus around screwing things up. So after helping Buffy stop Angelus from trying to destroy the world, he took Drusilla and left Sunnydale for South America. Yet Dru having psychic abilities could see that Spike loved Buffy, so she dumped him for a Chaos demon and then for a Fungus demon.
Spike came back to Sunnydale a heartbroken vampire wanting to prove Dru wrong about his feelings for the slayer. Yet, he didn't have any better luck during his second stay in Sunnydale — thanks to a secret government organization named, the Initiative, he got a chip implanted in his head which rendered him unable to kill or harm anything other than another demon without getting zapped by a painful electric shock. After a bought of depression he discovers that he can still fight and kill demons, so he begins to fight evil, which leaves him unpopular in the demon world.
Much to his chagrin, he really did fall in love with the Slayer. His love of Buffy led him to reject both Drusilla and Harmony in favor of a non-reciprocating relationship with the Slayer. Out of frustration Spike has Warren make a Buffy sex-robot built to allow him to fulfill his sexual fantasies with her. Unfortunately for Spike, the real Buffy discovered the robot and took it from him. It was at the same time that a hell-god named Glory was trying to discover the key, and mistakenly thought that Spike was it. Out of love for Buffy, Spike refused to tell Glory who the key was thereby protecting Buffy's little sister from harm, and preventing Buffy from suffering any heartache. Out of appreciation for being tortured and nearly killed Buffy gives him a kiss, and a thank you, but still not the physical relationship he desired.
The combination of the chip and his love for Buffy seemed to have a positive effect on him, causing him to not only turn his back on evil, but to become a helpful ally to the Scooby Gang, helping them fight the forces of evil. He helped fight and try to protect her little sister Dawn from an evil hellgod. Despite his best efforts, he wasn't able to save Buffy. She had to sacrifice herself to save the world. But even though Spike couldn't save her, he kept his word to watch out for and protect Dawn, which he done for many months there after. He stayed loyal and true to Buffy even when he had no hope of ever seeing her again. Lucky for him, Buffy's scooby friends, especially with Willow's magical help was able to ressurect Buffy from the grave.
After Buffy came back from the dead emotionally screwed up, she finally gave into her emotions for Spike, and began a secretive sexual relationship with him. But Buffy wasn't emotionally able to be in any serious relationship, and couldn't give Spike the love she felt he deserved, so she put an end to their relationship. Yet after all the mixed signals she had sent, he tried to initiate sex with her once more, resulting in an attempted sexual assult. Horrified by the violent nature of his demon, he went to Africa to get his soul back, to become the kind of man that would never hurt Buffy again. Yet all the guilt and remorse that came with the return of his soul drove him somewhat insane for several months. Once again he returned to Sunnydale to help Buffy. She was reluctant at first, but eventually tried to help him.
He became Buffy's most trusted and steadfast friend and ally. He helped her prepare the potential slayers for the struggle against The First Evil. And gave her the emotional support she needed to face and defeat Caleb & the First.
Spike sacrificed everything to help defeat the First's army of Uber-vamps and close the Sunnydale Hellmouth once and for all.
Nineteen days after saving the world, Spike re-appeared in the office of the new CEO of the Los Angeles branch of Wolfram & Hart. Angel and his fellow team mates were shocked to find themselves haunted by a non-corporeal vampire with a soul.
Although he had a very rocky relationship with Angel due to their past romantic conflicts over Dru and Buffy. He tried to help and be a part of Team Angel.
He developed a strong connection to Fred Burkle, whom was the first of Angel's crew to befriend him and try to help him become his former self.
Fred came up with a machine that could recorporealize a ghost, but Spike choose saving Fred from an evil spirit over becoming physical again.
When Spike had given up on being corporeal again, he received a box in the mail, that once opened restored him to the physical world.
Spike considered going off to find and rekindle his love affair with Buffy, but was unsure of himself or whether Buffy was ready for such a relationship yet. So he decided that Team Angel and the people of Los Angeles needed his help a bit more in their fight against the forces of evil.
Only time will tell if he'll be able to reconcile the sins of his past, and be able to continue on fighting evil to make amends and perhaps find love and redemption one day.
(Personality and character description)
Spike is a vampire. And British. Has a small scar on his left eyebrow. Is a 5'11 peroxide blonde vampire of Master rank, with piercing-blue eyes, a snarky foul mouth, prominent cheekbones, and a long, lean body that many ladies find desirable. He has a cool fashion sense as well, always giving off an air of confidence in his long black leather coat, black t-shirt, and black leather pants. Throughout the ages, he's always had a disire to reflect a certain danger, rebelliousness, and sexual appeal towards women. His demon decided that he finally reached the pinnacle of his success in 1977 when he killed his second slayer, taking the title slayer of Slayers. Therefore keeps the appearence he had then, sporting the black duster of the slayer and leaving his hair cut short and dyed peroxide blond. His outer appearance is his calling card to the world, embodying the reputation he has built over the years. And is an attempt to mask his inner battle with low self esteem and self-hatred that belonged to his human self.
As a vampire his demon tries hard to be the exact opposite of the human he possesses. To not be the shy, nerdy, weak, sensitive mama's boy that let everyone walk all over him. So took on the persona of a rebellious bad boy that is confident, out-going, and manly. But unlike most vampires who are only out for blood. Spike kept a great deal of William's humanity, such as being sensitive, kind, loving, loyal, and craving the love he never had as a human.
He is kind of a Byronic character who walks in beauty like the night of cloudless climes and starry skies and all that's best of dark and bright is in his aspect and his eyes. With his high cheek bones and his seductive Sid Vicious sneer. As a passionate mix of bad and good, the soulful vampire with a sexy british accent, exudes danger and romance; walking on the wild side he's taken on negative human traits that he thinks make him cool, like smoking, drinking, and gambling. And even though he was a highly educated middle class british gentlemen, that spoke perfect english. As a vampire his demon rejected the weakness he saw from his memories of being a nerdy bookworm as William. So he started speaking like the lower class working men of the East End of London, whom he admired for being tough, honest, and not fake like the wealthy nobility.
Spike's lower class East End of London cockney british accent is in stark contrast to the british accent's of more respectable gentlemen, such as Buffy's educated watcher Giles.
While he doesn't possess any fancy powers like Dracula, or even hypnotic powers such as thrall like his sire Drusilla. His confidence and sexual prowess makes him rather difficult for most woman to resist. This is especially true when he has set his sights on said woman in order to lure her into becoming his next meal or becoming his lover.
But he is not only a great lover, is also known to be an excellent fighter. Is able to adapt to any fighting style he faces, quickly determining how to defeat any opponent. This could go without saying, as any vampire to have defeated three Slayers would most likely be considered one of the toughest and most dangerous vampires in the world. He's been able to survive so long, cause unlike allot of vamps, he is able to change with the times. Staying up with the current trends in tv, music, and culture. Adapting to whatever challenges the world throws at him. Therefore is more human than demon. Is perhaps the fact that he tries so hard to be more human, that he doesn't have the powers other vamps his age have.
But Spike isn't just a bad boy. When he's bad, he's charmingly bad, always willing to offer a sarcastic running commentary on his own bloody exploits. He likes to brag about being a big bad vampire, and doesn't like being called good or a champion.
Yet no matter how much tough guy talk he does, Spike is the kind of guy who has proven that he would give up the chance to plunge the entire world into living hell in order to save a relationship. In other words, he puts romance and love ahead of everything else. And he's proven time and again that even though he's supposed to be an evil vampire, soul or no soul, that he can be trusted, and will always fight to protect the ones he loves.
Spike Quotes from BTVS:
[Season 5. Xander & Anya confront Buffy when they think she is sleeping with Spike, even though was the Buffybot instead]
Anya: We're just kinda thrown by the, you having sex with Spike.
Buffy: The who whating how with huh?
Anya: Okay, that's denial. That comes before anger.
Buffy: I am not having sex with Spike.
Anya: Anger.
Xander: No one is judging you. It's understandable. Spike is strong and mysterious and sort of compact but well-muscled...
Buffy: I am not having sex with Spike, but I'm starting to think you are.
[Season 5. Spike consoling Dawn who thinks she must be evil due to not really being human]
Spike: I'm a vampire. I know something about evil. You're not evil.
Dawn: Maybe, maybe not. Maybe I'm not evil but I don't think I can be good.
Spike: Well, I'm not good and I'm okay.
[Season 6: Buffy breaking up with Spike after months of on again off again relationship]
Buffy: It's over.
Spike: I've memorized this tune, luv. Think I have the sheet music. Doesn't change what you want.
Buffy: I know that. I do want you. Being with you... makes things... simpler. For a little while.
Spike: I don't call five hours straight a little while.
Buffy: I'm using you. I can't love you. I'm just... being weak, and selfish...
Spike: Really not complaining here.
Buffy: ...and it's killing me. I have to be strong about this. I'm sorry... William.
[last line in Season 6]
Cave Demon: You have endured the required trials.
Spike: Bloody right I have. So you give me what I want. Make me what I was, so Buffy can get what she deserves.
Cave Demon: Very well. We will return your soul.
[Spike screams in pain as he gets his soul back]
[Season 7. Buffy has said that Spike only loved her because she was unattainable and doubting her abilities to lead her friends to victory over the forces of evil]
Spike: You listen to me. I've been alive a bit longer than you, and dead a lot longer than that. I've seen things you couldn't imagine, and done things I'd prefer you didn't. I don't exactly have a reputation for being a thinker; I follow my blood, which does not always rush in the direction of my head. So I've made a lot of mistakes. A lot of wrong bloody calls. A hundred plus years, only one thing I've ever been sure of. You. Look at me. I'm not asking you for anything. When I tell you that I love you, it's not because I want you, or 'cause I can't have you, it has nothing to do with me. I love what you are, what you do, how you try... I've seen your strength, and your kindness, I've seen the best and the worst of you and I understand with perfect clarity exactly what you are. You are a hell of a woman. You're the one, Buffy.
Buffy: I don't... I don't want to be the one.
Spike: I don't want to be this good-looking and athletic. We all have crosses to bear.

(Disclaimer: this is a fictional livejournal about the Buffy The Vampire Slayer character Spike/William The Bloody. Joss Whedon, Mutant Enemy et al. own the character. I'm just playing with him in the online RPG for fun, no infringement is intended.)
In a comic, Halfrek calls Spike by the name William Pratt. In the forty-eight paged one-shot comic from IDW Publishing. Written by Peter David and illustrated by Fernando Goni, Spike: Old Times compiled with two other adventures into the trade paperback SPIKE is an age-old tale of spite and revenge that has Spike and Cecily whom is really vengence demon Halfrek in a conflict over the life of another young poet who Hallie wants to destroy. Just like she did Spike when he was human so long ago.
Note most people don’t consider books of any type to be canon. Although Peter David is a well known science fiction and comic writer. And would have had to get clearance on the story and an okay to write that Spike's human last name apparently is Pratt in the comic book released on August 31st, 2005. Also note that the classic horror/sci-fi movie legend Boris Karloff's, real name was William Pratt. So giving Spike that human name in that comic could be a tribute to a man that influenced Joss and so many other sci-fi fans over the years. But is still unclear to whether it is officially Spike's human name. So is non-canon until Joss officially says otherwise.
