Hello fella Singaporeans!
Did anyone attend Singapore Day on Saturday? I was there, and I absolutely loved it! Singlish was in the air, free food galore (the lines were a pain, but at least we didn't break into a riot!), and I went back feeling satisfied and thoroughly Singaporean.
Any of you were there too? How did you feel? I wish we had more events like these in Melbourne.

Hey guys, I'm doing a project about environmental and social issues, it would really help me out if you could please fill out the survey:
http://www.polldaddy.com/s/8110CFD7234D85EC/
I need only Singaporeans to do this survey, but I've never been to a huge local online community except here (have always been loitering around international forums) so I'd very much appreciate your responds ^_^
Thank you in advance!
(mods, let me know if this kind of post is not allowed, as it is not stated in the community's bio ^_^)

| poetry community |
[05 Oct 2008|11:32pm] |
Hello!
I might or might not be starting a LJ poetry and prose community for local contributors, which might or might not be called tiny_vessels. I'm looking for people who write (good) poetry/prose on a semi-regular or at least sporadical basis. Thoughts/suggestions for contributors?
p.s. I'm still debating over the "prose" bit, because the definition of "prose" seems to be rather unclear, and... well. Thoughts on this are also appreciated. Currently I agree most with the following definition, which can be found by typing "define:prose" into Google: "Written or spoken language that is not verse."

I don't know if anyone here watched the news today, or have heard about the residents in ang mo kio ave 1 (the mei hwan and tai hwan area). So here is the background. A foreign workers' dormitory is set to be built in the area and a road is going to be built through their estate. The workers are specifically factory workers from the IT sector.
www.sghousing.com/2008/09/17/foreign-workers-dorm-in-serangoon-gardens-not-definite/
So the residents are now "seeing red" as was reported and i don't know where to start about how immensely stupid these people are. You should have heard what some of those morons were saying. One person suggested that a long wire fence be built so that it would, and i quote, "disadvantage them to come into tai hwan" ignoring the sub standard english, did any of these idiots watch the pianist? or perhaps schindler's list? And these are old people, who LIVED through a holocaust themselves, on our own land and YET they want to restrict the movement of foreigners so they don't get inconvenienced!
i am so angry i don't know how to start slamming them, but really, forget slamming them, what is wrong with our society? These people need a place to live so what do these dip shits suggest? lets dig a hole and drop them in. THEN all will be ok because we want their cheap labour, but God Forbid we give them homes!

| NSman who died had not submitted medical certificate |

http://sg.news.yahoo.com/cna/20081003/tap-828-nsman-died-submitted-medical-cer-231650b.html
the article seems to suggest that if they bothered to exercise etc then they won't have any of such problems in the first place.
bullocks
people fall sick. period.
you can be as fit as a fiddle or what nots. people just fall sick if they caught a flu bug or something.
one thing i'd like to point out is, how unprofessional the doctors in public clinics can be, during my ns years getting an mc is like wanting a bite of the forbidden fruit. so no matter how sick we are some of us actually just go for training at the expense of doctors suggesting we are just "chao ke-ing", we are feeling like crap and you tell us we're fine. and instead of mc just give light duty etc. if like that might as well don't bother right?
this sort of mentality from the powers that be, are the sort of things that keeps some people from throwing in the MC towel.
but of course there are those who abuse the mc la, but when things like this happens, the govt will just apologise, say sorry, let's move on. you deal with your loss by yourself.

Kula Shaker - Ol' Jack Tar (I play this song, in tribute to the book) |
] |
From his pocket he took the large glass paperweight, its insides a multitude of bright colours, along with the paint-pot and the paintbrush.
He dipped the brush into the paint and carefully painted, in brown paint, on the surface of the paperweight the letters
E H
And beneath them he wrote:
WE DON'T FORGET
- Neil Gaiman, The Graveyard Book, Chapter 4.

Excuse me whilst I gape in absolute awe of Neil Gaiman's ingenuity. Such heart, courage and compassion. All of which we experience far and between in life's encounters.

| Book out day 2 |
[30 Sep 2008|11:54pm] |

My MUJI card finally arrives! And $112 was mysteriously banked into my account. No idea where that came from. Probably government bribe or something. Which means: Muji shopping tomorrow before I book in. Hur hur.
Also, my specs broke in the army. Some fucker from another platoon swing his bag, hit me in the face and it dropped to the floor, snapping the sides. So I made another pair:
God, I can't stand the shortness of my hair. Wearing a cap makes it even worst because it just screams of "NS BOY". Wearing my bowler hat make me look like a chemo patient. And yes, I do realize that hat isn't the typical stereotype look, but I really do look like one.
Went out today with Isaac and Inez and watched The Days, a local film by good people over at Sinema. It was pretty good, except I didn't like the ending. It could have ended better, imo. But still, great effort in the casting and art direction of that particular era.
We also went to Shokudo for lunch and it's not bad, but not something I would have often. I rather head to my secret awesome sashimi place.
Also met up with hy and zq for a while and they were dragged around with me to buy underwear. Needed them because I was getting abrasion during road marches in the army. Zq was being gay for getting embarrassed at it. I have no idea how he's ever going to follow his gf to buy lingerie for her. Poor flo.
Booking back in tomorrow at 8.45pm and I'm so not looking forward to it.
I should just AWOL and disappear to some foreign country where I spend the rest of my life traveling around taking pictures of the locals with my trusty 10D and have sex with gracious milf hosts while teaching Singlish to kids to earn some keep. Then 10 years down the road I'll hold my exhibition in parts of Europe call "From the eyes of an Exile" and be insanely famous before returning back to Singapore where I'll be received with open arms and let off with a fine that's like a slap to the wrist.
Hmm. Tempting.

| My Magic |
[30 Sep 2008|11:46pm] |

Totally forgot to pimp this on my blog.
Watch this film if you are willing to experience something different. Raw, powerful and emotional. It's usually quite hard to appreciate films that you have worked on because you keep watching it over and over again, but watching My Magic on the big screen during the gala launch was just incredible. Honestly.
And be the 421236742424th 1st person to call me and say "omfg i see your name on the credits!". Trust me, it would make me very happy, haha. Just kidding.

http://www.straitstimes.com/Breaking%2BNews/Singapore/Story/STIStory_284282.html
Even though he was an irascible loudmouth, he was our irascible loudmouth. And I'd like to believe he meant something to Singaporeans, almost a symbol of hope in a way: that not all of us are fat, apathetic drones who are fine with the status quo, that some of us do care enough to continue "making noise" about the govt even when bankrupt and broke, to start a new political party at an age when most men just want to live out the rest of their days quietly.
He was a familiar sight at Centrepoint, tirelessly pushing his newsletters into the hands of shoppers who were too busy thinking about their next purchase to care about what he had to say about freedom and about Singapore. He will be missed.

| 추격자 (2008) |
[29 Sep 2008|08:52pm] |

Watched The Chaser (aka 추격자) today and it was really good. Brutal, plenty of gut-wrenching scenes, natural depiction of people, the whole bureaucracy crap, the inefficiency of policemen, politicians and serial killers all mashed into one slick plate of kimichi. Acting is very strong here, and I like how the cast feels and look very "ordinary and normal", giving a very raw edge to the film rather than the typical polished A-star cast most Korean movies would have. Production value is damn high too. /IS VERY JEALOUS OF KOREAN FILM BUDGETS.
The Chaser follows the anti-hero path, the protagonist is a former cop turn pimp who goes out to find for his girls who have been disappear one after another, all by the same customer who happens to be a serial killer. He takes the vigilante stance to get to the bottom of everything, while the police fumbles around with red tape and inefficiency of its police force to apprehend the killer.
I really hated how the film ended, but because it ended in that manner, it made me respect the film even more because it didn't conform to giving the typical happy ending. The ending was just so gruesome and saddening, because it almost leads you into thinking it would be a nice closure to the whole insanity. And as a result, I actually like this film.
Definitely recommending this film to all. But take note it's M18.

Got a little time to blog now. Will need to report back to the SAF Terminal by 1430hrs.
Regimental life is hell. But I gave up trying to fight against it and I'm slowly assimilating into the whole system. Yet it slowly eats into me whenever I give up a piece of my own individuality in exchange for being on the safe side. Disgusting.
Though I must say that I'm secretly enjoying this healthy lifestyle of exercising daily. It's been two very long weeks, but I do see some improve in my physical fitness.
Everything about the army is pretty much what everyone who has gone through says it is. Won't bitch, or rather, I can't bitch since the military has eyes and ears everywhere on the internet. Or so they claim.
I tried keeping a diary for the first week of confinement, but gave up because it was too tiring and time consuming. Even writing in point form is tiring. There's hardly any time for me to write either or to come up with ideas because your brain is slowly tuned to just listening to orders and not thinking.
Did I mention how I hate my tanned look? I'm burnt to crisp.

| FREEDOM |
[25 Sep 2008|05:38pm] |
Just booked out!
Early book out today because I have been given permission to attend My Magic's Debut Screening at Vivocity tonight. My OC and PC are very very understanding people.
Too much thing to say, and so little time. Just finished clearing 152 emails and shitload of facebook crap. I'll need to book back tomorrow, so I'll save everything for a better post on Sunday when I book out again (finishing the required 2 weeks confinement).
I'm burnt to the core too. MISS CIVILIZATION.
