X-Files Title Challenge: Sleepless and The Red and the Black
Two 100 word drabbles written for the X-Files Title Challenge. All Buffyverse fics.
Xander sits, grasping his spoon. He holds it frozen in mid air, and watches as the ice cream drips off its end. Oblivious to the movement around him, he thinks of the last time he ate ice cream out of the container, and thinks of the woman he ate it with.
Her memory haunts him, and he struggles to remember. Her touch, the saltiness of her lips, the curve of her hips -- they are all ghosts dancing beyond his reach. Her voice is fading, and he is sleepless. Every dream is of her and and she's leaving him behind.
Dawn surveys her skin. It is a road map drawn in red and black. Scars traverse her arms, connecting landmarks and milestones. Her first vamp, the loss of her innocence, the day she lost her hope; all can be found on her map.
The red and the black comfort her with their familiarity. But they can't comfort her where it counts. They don't penetrate to her heart, no matter how deep she feels them go.
The red and the black hide the little girl lost from prying eyes, but they can't hide the girl from herself. Or her dead sister.
