9:22p Vegetarian/Vegan Eating Patterns
I was curious as to know if there are any eating patterns that any of my fellow vegetarians/vegans follow when cooking, eating out, or both. I don't just mean the style but also the types of ingredients you all use.
As for me when I cook my meals tend to be influenced by vegetarian Southern European cooking like Spanish (no, I don't mean tacos, enchiladas, etc.), Italian, Greek, and occasionally Southern French. I am trying to expand to Turkish and Levantine (Lebanese, Syrian) as well. Some of my other meals that I cook also tend to include olive oil, tomatoes, onions, garlic, beans, lentils, pasta, rice, bell peppers, and bread. I also tend to use spices, but my favorites are usually paprika, parsley, rosemary, basil, cumin, thyme, and lately dill.
When I do go out to eat it just tends to be just about anything vegetarian-friendly, but I have leaned to Indian, Chinese, and Vietnamese lately.

12:07p
So my boyfriend proposed something to me last night. He asked if he became a vegetarian for 6 months, if I'd be willing to eat a steak once.. I think at first he was kidding, until I showed some interested and started asking him questions (how big does the steak have to be, what happens if you eat meat during those 6 months, etc). So I've been debating this. To be honest, I've been a vegetarian for about 8 years but I have eaten meat within that time. A few times while drunk as piss, few times on accident (which I'm sure a majority of vegetarians have done), and a few times for whatever random reason, so I may not be the best vegetarian in the world, but I'm really undecided on this. So I thought I'd turn to my fellow veggies and get an idea of what you all think. I'd really appreciate any comments as to why you chose what you did, so I can get arguments from both sides. Thanks!

11:54a You only come out once
So I meant to post this yesterday, in honor of National Coming Out Day. I joined the comm a while ago, but this is my first post! I know circumstances and consequences of coming out as LGBT are much different in severity than for going vegetarian in unaccepting families, but in my own personal experience with my conservative, Roman Catholic, meat-eating family, I did feel an all too familiar level of anxiety. I came out as transgender first, and then because they assumed I was a straight trans woman, I had to come out again that I was indeed lesbian. My family being meat-and-potatoes kinda folk, I did feel hesitation about telling them I was no longer going to eat meat. I of course wasn't threatened with being disowned this time, but the strain of them thinking I've finally jumped off the edge makes it difficult to be with them. Cue the scene from 'But I'm a Cheerleader', "You tried to make us eat this....tofu." So they remain in total exasperation of me, getting the typical "What do you eat then?", "You won't get enough protein" and "What d'ya mean you won't eat fish, it's not meat!" For my own going vegetarian for ethical reasons, I had a difficult time as I'm a cancer researcher in a lab that does animal experimentation. You can read about that here and here if you like. Anyone also have similar coming out as veg*an stories?

HELP!
Next weekend, I'm going on "weekend tour" with my best friends' band. One of the band members and I are both vegetarians, and I'm looking for meal-type foods for the road. We're only going to be gone four days, but it's four days in a van in Florida. Is there anything substantial we could take (even that I make in advance)? I've got plenty of snacks and such.
Thanks!

2:05p Mexico!!
Hello everyone. I've looked through the last few pages of entries here, as well as through the memories, and I didn't see a post on this topic. Forgive me though, if I've missed it.
My boyfriend's sister is getting married in Mexico in a bit over a week (we leave the 19th). I'm the only vegetarian going, and I'm a bit unsure of how much trouble I'm going to have finding vegetarian options. We'll be staying in a house in Sayulita (near Puerto Vallarta) for just over a week. His family is quite accommodating, and has promised to have veg*n options on hand for me to cook when we're eating at the house. I'd like to be able to partake when we go out as well...
So, has anyone had experience trying to find vegetarian food in Mexico? I could just go with rice and beans, but that's a tad boring :) Any advice to make the trip easier? I do know a smattering of Spanish, so that should help a bit.
Thanks in advance!
PS: I'm a lacto-ovo-vegetarian (though I'm weaning myself into veganism as the days go by) if that helps

10:34a Odd question - toothpaste
So, my wife and I recently purchased a tube of Tom's of Maine toothpaste in an effort to avoid using a product tested on animals (or supporting a company who does). Well...the toothpaste tastes like ass. Mint-flavored ass, but ass nonetheless. Further, Tom's is owned by Colgate, who doesn't exactly live up to Tom's higher standards.
So, here's my question: can anyone recommend a good brand of toothpaste that a) doesn't leave a taste in your mouth so bad that it makes you want to brush your teeth with another toothpaste, just to get rid of the horrid taste, b) is reasonably easily available, and c) doesn't test on animals, and isn't owned by a company that tests on animals?
Thanks!

4:52p vegan question
eylo, new to the community... quick history of my eating habits: i was "vegan" (diet only) for a year... then recently within the past couple months i went from "vegan" to pescetarian then to lacto-vegetarian.
the only reasons i stopped being "vegan" is because 1: it was getting embarrassingly impossible to go out with my boyfriend's omnivorous family without causing drama (they like eating french, and i was constantly asking the chef to create a dish for me which made me feel way high maintenance) and 2: i was getting really bad heartburn all the timet.
i'd love to go back to veganism, but i really need to find some solutions to these problems... eating yogurts and cheeses really helped my heartburn (i can drink green tea again!)... are there any other solutions? does anyone else have this problem?
and how do you guys deal with going out? i always wanna start throwing stuff when i'm out to brunch and everyones got this great big ol' steaming plate of something that smells yummy, and i'm staring at bread, a few pieces of dry cantaloupe and iced tea :[

5:42p Thanksgiving Recipes
This will be my husband's first Thanksgiving as a vegetarian. That makes it especially important than I find some fantastic recipes to fill the table. He doesn't go for the fake meat, and we'll be eating with a bunch of non-veg, so I think I really need to find some filling dishes that don't have anything 'weird' in them. Anything and everything Fall/Thanksgiving- what are your favorites?

5:39p Morningstar steak strips
I don't eat the morningstar farm corn dogs or chicken nuggets or anything like that anymore, but I am a HUGE fan of their meal starters. I make tacos and chili with their beef crumbles and make tons of things with the chik'n - chicken and dumplings, chicken enchiladas, chicken burritos etc. However I would like some ideas of what to make with the steak strips. I have only really used them for fajitas in the past. We had enchiladas monday night and tacos last night so I am looking for something a little different tonight. Suggestions?
