"Hey, have you ever TRIED to find a bathroom on a pyramid?" Tonight this conversation took place: My mother: Do you have the last Harry Potter movie? We should watch it tonight. I've never seen it. me: Uh, yes, you have, we watched it when I was here for Christmas. Mother: *blank look* me: It had the new headmaster? And at the end they have that huge fight at the ministry? Mother: Which is the one where they're underwater? So we watched OotP (again), which I'm pretty sure my mother didn't understand, and then I watched the new SG-1 movie, Continuum. ( Teal'c, you know it makes me hot when you say chapp'ai. Spoilers for Continuum, obvs. ) Current Mood: amused |

Post-TSbyBS, Police Academy Hey, I'm finally through with reading all the awesome stories you recced me the last time and now I've also completed season 4 of the series (which was kind of sad and satisfying at the same time). It also awakened a hunger in me that I really hope you all can help me with.
I'm searching for all post-TSbyBS fics that deal with Blair going to the police academy, either in passing or as a vital plot point. Maybe even until he becomes Jim'S partner again, would be great to read.
I'm anciously awaiting every and all the amazing suggestions you can come up with, be it gen, slash or even slight het (as long as Jim and Blair stay friends of course)
Thank you all in advance, free hugs are given out at the entrance. |

Did anyone catch the FDA number on that pill? Oof. Two, count 'em, TWO medications whose side affects (which should mellow with time) are nausea, loss of appetite, sleepiness, yawning and tiredness (yes, these are all different). *stumbles around* I think I may give in around 8:30 and go to bed. On the bright side I might lose weight in the most unhealthy way imaginable! *\o/* Up side, can sleep 12 hours without sleeping the day away. Down side, won't be able to read my flist till I watch SGA (and/or Psych). Could we just cut everything? Could we? *tired* (Yes the preview information counts as spoilers.) Current Mood: exhausted |

omg so much to do. so obviously i have to make an LJ entry about it. Work was hectic today--we're taking Monday off, so we had to get really caught up before we could go. But all I wanted was to do music and/or fandom-related things! First, thanks to everyone who gave me some music recs for Ivo. I'm going to put together a playlist for him tomorrow. But tonight, I have a LOT I want to get done, and I'm hoping writing it down will help me stay focused: -fix two scenes and post MCR college AU. -read Rachel's story and be insightful -write Brendon-as-secret-babydaddy story. AND NOTHING ELSE. *is very stern with self* Also, I plan to be very stern about resting, because my going to Warped on Sunday is conditional with my being WELL enough to go, and right now my body is making tentative suggestions that perhaps it will be a no-go. Body, STOPPIT. >:( |

My one and a half cents Okay, so lately, between the formation of my new comm and other stuff, I have been giving thought to the whole concept of feedback in fandom, positive and “constructive”, locked and unlocked, and my ideal vision of fandom as a supportive community with certain social rules. And I’m not here to get myself linked on metafandom, and I’m not here to tell you what the hell to think, because hey, you’re going to think what you want anyway, but I have to get it straight in my own head, mostly, and those of you who have friended me and perhaps have chosen me to be privy to locked posts deserve to know what you’re getting into. (BTW, it’s always total defriending amnesty day here at my pad. Just so you know.) The way I figured I’d explain it to myself, and to y’all, all the while using a minimum of cuss words, is to compare it to the dreaded RL. ( Beware, analogies ahead. ) |

livelongnmarry squee post! Congratulations to the winners of my livelongnmarry auctions! I'll be writing: a Snarry fic for venturous1, my August Daily Deviant fic for the_kinky_pet, my October Daily Deviant fic for shocolate, and the complete GSM by 14 February 2009 for annierl, who will also receive a GSM-related bonus fic after the WiP is complete! My bidders' generosity added $375 to the overall auction total! *dances* I'm so pleased that anyone bid on my work at all that I've offered ficlets to those bidders on my auctions who didn't win, and I'll be posting those ficlets as I've completed them. I donated $205 in support of marriage equality by winning: betelin_notecor's fanfic auction on fodirteg's behalf, erastes' original gay historical fiction auction, lee_rowan's Speak Its Name/cameo appearance in a novel auction, and uninhibited333's fanfic auction, and by participating in the_minx_17's private drabble auction. People are still reporting their wins, but the auction has already raised $30,459.93! More than that, George and Brad know about the auction and are moved by our efforts! I couldn't be more thrilled! |

Why Monetizing Social Media Through Advertising Is Doomed To Failure (part one) I saw today's lj_2008 post announcing the return of Basic accounts with great interest, because the large print giveth and the small print taketh away. As the comments to that post make clear, they're not talking about bringing back Basic accounts; they're talking about creating two levels of ad-supported account, one with more ads than the other, and calling the one with fewer ads "Basic". The reason given, of course, is the need to "generate the revenue we need to support the development of LiveJournal while respecting the community", and that's how it should be: any service needs to bring in enough cash to pay the bills, fund development, and make sufficient profit to satisfy their investors and their board. Right now, the prevailing trend in the industry, which LJ is following, is to use an advertising-centric, sponsor-centric business model that capitalizes on the content being provided by the users of a social media site to provide micro-targeted advertising. In its best implementations, it puts businesses in touch with consumers on a one-to-one, human level, while allowing the hosted service to meet their revenue needs and earn enough of a profit to keep them motivated. And yet, so many LiveJournal users greet any mention of advertising or sponsorship with an immediate "DO NOT WANT". It's gut instinct, and examining that gut-instinct response is fascinating; if you read the comments to that lj_2008 post, the one thing that becomes immediately clear is that LiveJournal users resent someone else profiting from the content they provide without providing them with what they perceive as "significant enough" return for that use of their content, whether that return is in features, service-stability, or usability. More than that, though, there's a strong undercurrent of LJ users believing that advertising is not the right source of revenue for LJ to be pursuing -- that the service would be better-served by choosing to rely on other sources of income. Most of the people in the comments have never run any sort of business on the scale and scope of LiveJournal, of course, and so that belief of theirs might be incredibly naive. I've come to believe, though, that the gut instinct is correct: the existing advertising model is inherently unprofitable and unsustainable for a social media service and will never reach a level of profitability and sustainability that will provide a social media service with lasting and ongoing revenue sufficient to cover operating costs and provide a profit, both because the existing advertising model doesn't provide sufficient value to its advertisers and because it's inherently anathema to the people who are the service's most valuable content creators. It's taken me a while to come to this conclusion, and I'm still not entirely convinced. But I want to talk about the economy of Web 2.0 for a while, and lay out my arguments to explain why I believe that the existing advertising model is not the answer to building a sustainable service. (And, maybe, offer some alternatives.) Today, I'm going to talk about how we got here, how internet advertising works, and provide some background and history. Tomorrow, I'll lay out the conclusions I've drawn from those premises, and provide my rationale for why I believe that monetizing social media through advertising is doomed to failure in its current implementation. I wrote the first draft of this a few months ago and left it alone because it needed considerable editing and I got distracted by other things. This is the second iteration, and I want to say thank you to everyone on my friends list who helped me pinpoint the weak spots. ( A brief history of internet economy; or, what happens when the underpants gnomes creep into your business plan; or, the long dark road to punching the monkey. ) |

Two questions 1. How do you find out how many installments one start up disk of MS Word has made? Is there a way to find out in your computer or in the cd?
2. This is sort of embarrassing, but I'm going to go with "I have a Mac and these things don't usually happen to me" - how do you get rid of a pop-up that doesn't have the turn off buttons on the top and only has a "yes, I want your file" button in it? |

Well, the day has come! What day is that, you ask (you don't really, but I'll pretend you do)? This is the conversation I just had: Friend: I have a pain in my side and an entirely unwanted sympathy for Panic. I cling to my loathing of Pete Wentz. Me: Sympathy? Friend: Yeah, they are not the devil! Who knew? Me: omg I had the same revelation yesterday!!!!!!!!! wtf is going on? is this a mindray? Friend: IT MUST BE *waves hands* IT'S A PLOT! !!! Yesterday I watched Panic's new video on (you guessed it!) Steven's Untitled Rock Show (seriously, I'm a fucking addict), and I thought to myself ok, fine, this song's catchy and Brendon's voice is nice and Spencer's hot (the italics indicate it was in my head and not out loud for fear the universe would hear me). Jenn came home and I had paused my show due to the fact that after this Panic revelation I was scared they would play like TAI and I would be all oh, Mike Carden's alright anyway or something even worse--like suddenly coming around on Metro Station for the love of all that's holy. Anyway, so Jenn watches the video, and I see it on her face...she doesn't hate it, either! So I scream "OH FUCKING HELL FALL OUT BOY MAKE A NEW ALBUM BEFORE I BECOME A PANIC FAN!" and Jenn says "OH MY GOD, I KNOW!" and we wept. Wtf's going on? TAI picspam I really love Butcher's tree tattoo. That's why I clicked that cuttag on my fl anyway because I wanted to look at that amazing tat (since I am currently planning my newest one myself). All that black must have taken forever to heal. Why did Tom Conrad get kicked out of the band? (I hate myself for wanting to know this.) Is there substantiated info on that or just fan gossip? Please send help! Tonight we're going to Earlimart I guess. Blah. Not a huge fan. Downloadfest or whatever on Sunday? I guess that, too. The line up for that is a bit like my jukebox in hell, so I'll see if I survive. Maybe I'll wear my Cab t-shirt in rebellion. Flosstradamus is sort of an amusing name for a band, I suppose. What is the deal with this Panic thing? Arrrrrrrrrg. |

Live @ O'Hare, waiting on my connection to El Paso. lifegivingsword's sense of direction is having a bad day. He led us in circles around the terminal for about ten minutes until he figured out where the restaurant he'd seen on our way through security was. In other news, we cleared customs here in record time (but security this morning in Manchester was a nightmare). *thumbs up* |

Jack/Daniel transformation fic Hi, I'm looking for a story with established Jack/Daniel, where Jack is transformed into a dog. I believe it was a black wolf-dog. Jack retained his personality but not all of his human intelligence; I really liked how well Jack-as-dog was described. The story was mostly humorous with a little angst. So as not to give anything away, I'll just say that the words "Blue Bunny" figured into the story. This was at least a month back, most likely more. I can't remember where I read it, but I've looked back through stargate_search with no luck. Thanks in advance!
P.S. Is there a J/D or SG-1 Transformation theme list anywhere? :) |

junior bunk took it downtown So I'm waiting for my iced cappuccino at Cucina, and I order the lemon yogurt cake for lunch, because invariably, in the summer, I get downstairs/outside and the thought of eating real food makes me queasy, so lunch is often something like ice cream (or frozen yogurt), fruit, salad, or cake, and today I wanted cake. And the older (retired, or so she said) lady on line behind me goes, "Oh dear, that's nothing but sugar. You're going to perspire all afternoon." And then she winked at me. WTF? So the girl behind the counter is like, "You know we don't put sugar in the iced cappuccino, right?" And I'm like, "Yeah, no, I know. I don't like sugar in my coffee." Speaking of which, my usual deli man is on vacation this week, so the guy filling in keeps giving me four sugars with my coffee. I can't even conceive of putting that much sugar in my coffee. Ew. I mean, a splash of Hershey's syrup on occasion, or some vanilla ice cream if it's a dessert, but I don't even drink flavored coffee anymore, and I never put sugar in. *wrinkles nose* *** So I read an interesting casting spoiler for SPN s4, and it made me think of who I would really like to see guest star on the show. Top of the list, of course, is Katee Sackhoff, so Dean can have sex with her. (Actually, I would just be happy if she and Jensen Ackles would both show up in a place at the same time and have a picture taken together. I could work with that.) And I would LOVE to see Gillian Anderson cameo, and have Dean be like, "Hey, that was Gillian Anderson," and Sam would be like, "No, it wasn't. Remember the time you thought the janitor was Matt Damon?" but it really would be her, and Sam would never believe it. I think that'd be hilarious, personally. The other stunt casting thingy I would love - on any show, really, but mostly on SPN 'cause it's my show - Richard Belzer doing an uncredited cameo as Munch. How AWESOME would that be? Seriously! He could go on and on about conspiracy theories and Dean would be like, "I hear you, man." It'd be hilarious. (He should show up on Burn Notice. Also 'cause it's my show.) But otherwise, the people I would like to show up in non-gimmicky roles are Gina Torres - she could be an awesome kickass hunter; Andre Braugher, maybe as a priest who knows something about demons; and Michael K. Williams, possibly as a guy trying to keep his family together after something supernatural happens, and Sam and Dean help them out. It could be awesome! I am not asking for much! I mean, Andre Braugher has been reduced to being the black guy who gets killed fifteen minutes into a horror movie ("The Mist" which I did not see, so perhaps I'm wrong, but that's what it looked like on the commercial); he deserves more than that, and he could do a week in Vancouver. It wouldn't kill him. And he could speak Latin and maybe flay a few demons with his caustic wit and intelligence. You know it'd be awesome! (I am still hoping the Most Awesome Crossover Ever makes an appearance. *eyes vee_fic meaningfully*) *** I have 730 words on my spn_summergen, and I am pleased so far. Hopefully, that keeps up. *** Work today has basically made me want to gouge my eyes out. Goddamn expense reports. Goddamn stupid-ass, unintuitive system. *grumbles* But I think it's all fixed now. I hope. Five-thirty cannot come soon enough. *** Current Mood: workingCurrent Music: people chattering around my cube |
