Public Service Annoucement :: Jim Is Missing
My friend Jim, who suffered a stroke last year, left on a day pass Thursday afternoon from the Brooklyn nursing home at which he is being treated. Details are still sparse, but it appears that he became separated from his traveling companion on the subway, and has not been seen or heard from since that day.

While Jim retains his mental faculties and can find his way around as well as anyone, he has great difficulty speaking and some difficulty walking. More importantly, he doesn’t have the daily medication and care he needs to prevent another stroke.

We believe he had around $180 on him at the time. An avid poker player, Jim had mentioned a desire to go to Atlantic City, and it’s possible that he headed there on his own despite his need for daily medical care and monitoring.

The NYPD has been alerted, but we need to make sure the word is spread and that people all over the region are keeping an eye out for him. 2600 have put together this flyer with a toll-free hotline for the reporting of any sightings or information. You can also email Off the Hook on his whereabouts. All help is greatly appreciated.

    Hi Everyone,
My Birthday is just around the corner and I'd like to go to a Burlesque show and/or Karaoke bar. It will be my 21st but some of my friends will still be underage. Can anyone recommend some 18+ Burlesque Shows or Karaoke bars to go to on Saturday nights.

I'm also open to any other suggestions for celebrating my birthday.

    Hidden poison mouse traps
Well, we've got a mouse. My cat is absolutely going mad to catch and eat the disease-ridden creature, so I've got to get it trapped and out PRONTO before she finds it and makes herself sick. Does anyone know a place in midtown or downtown Manhattan where I could go and buy a trap? I need one of the kind with the poison in the middle, so the mouse goes in and eats the poison and gets stuck inside and dies. Something like this?

Has anyone actually seen any? I wish i had time tomorrow to hunt some down, but I've got to work all day, which sucks, so I'll only have time to hit one or maybe two stores.

    Thanks!

Too Late to Consider PSU Main?
I'm not sure if anyone will be able to help me on this question, and I do plan on asking my guidance counselor the same question, but I wanted to see if you all had any immediate feedback.

November 30th is the suggested date to have applications submitted for Penn State University. My first preference would be Main Campus (just like many others, I know). November 30th is a decent time away, but I was wondering if, at this point, I should nix the idea completely.

Is it too late to consider applying to Penn State Main? Are most students likely already admitted? I know a branch campus would be more likely, but I'm more curious about University Park chances.

    The 'additional information' box
What sort of things (if any) should you write in an 'additional information' box. In this case, my essays are required by the school, it's just cold, hard data. For example, it asks for the name of my High School but not my GPA. It asks where I have worked in the past 12 months, but does not ask for number of hours, duties etc. Should I use this box if at all to elaborate and on what? I feel like a bunch of numbers and very unoriginal in this application right now, or does it just not matter?

    Many thanks

    Scholarships
Help! I am starting to get back into looking for scholarships. Right now, I am applying to one I think I deserve. Its for students who are active on campus and I am extremely active with my campus.

I guess firstly, would anyone like to see what I have so far? They want a 1 - 2 page resume, brief statement of why I deserve this, and one page double spaced of my future goals and dreams.

But in general, I want to know what does it take to win a scholarship? What kind of concepts, buzz words, etc. are they looking for? How many of you have won an essay scholarship? Mind sharing??

    bed bugs and laundromats
I thought there might be a lot of these posts, but I checked the tags and didn't find much...

My apartment has bedbugs. Argh. I live in a small building with only two other apartments, and some new tenants moved in recently... I think they might have brought the bed bugs with them. I contacted the landlord and she's going to treat the whole building.

After reading up on bed bugs-- it sounds like I'm basically screwed. Every source says to wash your clothing in super hot water and dry your clothing for an extended period of time after every wear, then store in an airtight bag until you can wash it again. But... most apartments, including mine, don't have washers and dryers.
So most people who've been "bed-bugged" in the city are spending major time in laundromats, or what? That just seems so expensive...

I live by myself and don't have too much furniture, but I really don't want to throw it all away. :/ (I've heard that a lot of people just throw their stuff away if they have bedbugs.) Is it possible to safely treat and keep it?

But yeah, my biggest question is about clothing and how to properly wash/store/keep it. The more I read about this, the more worried I become. It sounds like I need to give up my apartment and clothing and furniture and just live in a cardboard box.

One Ticket to [Title of Show]'s Broadway Closing Performance Tonight @ 7:30
I have one extra ticket to [Title of Show]'s final performance on Broadway for tonight.

It's a great seat- Orchestra, Row B and it's going to be an amazing show.

I paid $101.50 for it. I'd like to recoup as much of that cost as I can.

Does anyone have a best offer?

You draw me in, gently winding a golden thread of love and passion around
My heart, each length tighter and tighter each strand carefully placed
Layer upon layer one on top of another, you leave no space uncovered...
I feel myself being tightly bound without struggling to be free...

Pulling me close, you kiss away the terrified agony in my tortured soul...
Stroking back my hair, you set me down and gently clear away the debris...
And when it's finally safe to fly, you grab the end and set me free...
And with a flick of a wrist, you spin me...

...if I were a more romantic person, I'd even say that it was Fate.

Title: To An Almost Lover, A Letter
    Genre: Romance
    Word Count: 284

    ...

The first time we met, in that small house made even smaller by the crowd, you weren’t the first thing my eyes fell upon. No, that was the silverware and the Eve apples in their banana-yellow bowl, so much brighter and headier in colour than you –- dark, relaxed, easy –- you, sitting at the table eclipsed by brilliance.

“Hi,” you said; “Hey,” I replied – and at that moment we were just an ordinary boy and an ordinary girl giving names to faces made familiar by chance.

    ...

Yes, ordinary, just ordinary - that's what you were.

But oh, how wrong I was, as wrong and as naive as I was about so many things concerning you. For there had been no "spark", no cliche "love at first sight", no magical fairy-tale effect when your warm eyes had met mine. And so I was lulled into a false sense of security - until the night wore on and our perfunctory smiles and idle chit-chat softened into a laughter and a connection and a conversation that meant far, far more.

Because I confess I underestimated your charm, how quickly you could creep under my skin and deeper yet, like a swift and terrible virus inhabiting, diseasing – 'Vini, vidi, vici'. In my mind’s eye I can see your eyes widening at this insinuation of malevolency – “Who me?” and I must laugh and retract my words, for of course malevolency does not become of you – not quite like that sliver of awkward confidence does – and you are, I'm sure, too good and too sweet at the core to ever play more than the heroic.

...Somehow the silverware didn't seem quite so bright after that.

    noise
On certain nights in my neighborhood (in Brooklyn), a group of people hangs out on the street and play loud music from their cars until all hours in the morning. Does anyone know if I call the local precinct they would do anything about it? These people are basically right underneath my window and even though I am on the 4th floor, the noise travels up and it is so loud that I can't go to bed. I just don't know if the local precinct would deal with this type of noise; has anyone had any experience with this? Could you remain anonymous when making these type of reports?

    Family Adventures?

Can anyone suggest family friendly, easy to reach adventures for next Sunday?  We've already done AMNH, CMOM, Bronx Zoo, NY Aquarium, CPZoo, and BBG.  I'm open to leaving the city if it's easily accesable by public transport and has access to kosher food.  It's for my husband's birthday, but has to be something my 2.5 year old will enjoy as well.

    Safe Harbor

    Twilights Destiny by Arriere Pensee

You are my safe harbor, the one place where I can drop
Anchor and not be frightened by the wind nor terrified of
The dark and dangerous waves, the one place where I
Am protected and unconquerable, where the sea is
Forever calm and tranquil, where I need not have fear of
Anything nor anyone, where my soul is restful and at peace...

You are my lighthouse, shining your bright beacon of hope and
Understanding through the dark and treacherous night, guiding
Me to a quiescent refuge where I am sheltered from the storm
And bathed in a warm glow of peaceful equanimity, a place
Where my soul is free to take a spontaneous and uninhibited
Sojourn, secure in the knowledge that I am being watched over...

You are my moonlit bay, beauty incarnate, outshining even
The brightest stars that are reflected in the endless depths
Of your onyx eyes, you are the silvery ripples cast down from
Heaven to play upon the dancing swells of the gently restless
Ocean, my personal Calypso, guardian and watcher, forever
Vigilant and heedful, lest the demons of the deep start to rise...

You are my carefully charted shoreline where all the jagged
Rocks are mapped for my protection, where I need not fear
Shipwreck nor death amongst the jeopardous and craggy
Breakwater, you are my sextant, expertly aligned and true,
Forever leading me to this place of harmony and accord,
You are my anchor, holding me firm against any tempest...

You are my safe harbor, forever true, loyal, kind and caring,
A place I can retreat to, escape to, a place that resides deep
Within my heart and soul, untouched by all the vile and ugly
Rancor of the world, your love carries me upon the waves of
Life, steering me clear of dangers that seek to pull me down,
You are in essence my savior, and the answer to my prayers...

    Last Minute College Searching
I'm back again. >< So I've recently become interested in Latin/Classics and would definitely like to minor in that plus German during college. But I've noticed that a lot of the schools I'm considering applying to right now have very weak Classics departments, something I hadn't considered before. I'm also somewhat interested in Humanities and would like to apply to some schools with good programs there, too. Any ideas for some colleges that are good with Humanities, Classics, and foreign languages in general? I'm sure that a lot of the Liberal Arts schools out there are, but what about some of the bigger schools? NYU, for example maybe? If it is a small school, I'd rather it be in a city setting. Any ideas? I'm sort of stuck here. Thanks!
