| Potatoes or corn? |
[21 May 2013|03:58pm] |
They say here they identified the cause of the Irish Potato Famine. http://www.popsci.com/science/article/2013-05/cause-irish-potato-famine-has-been-discovered
I disagree. They may have found the pathogen that caused the potatoes to blight, but the cause of this famine was that an entire island (over)population was nutritionally dependent on a single plant, and one that wasn't native to it's soils.
If the US had a 3 year corn blight (and let's include both organic and Monsanto varieties), would we starve?
Alternatively, what do you prefer your chips to be made of?

| Have we reached our Omega Point? |
[20 May 2013|03:18pm] |
I wonder if one of the reasons why this community has become so dormant is because we have said everything we have needed to say.
We already know and recognize trolls, and don't respond to them anymore.
We don't care about people's different lifestyles. We aren't going to use the internet to beat our chest because our tribes are feuding.
Any opinions about veganism, bicycles, sexual orientation, the CRC, suburbs, punk rock, Voodoo Donuts, fareless square, and chicken coops have already been stated, restated, and worn down.
Even absurdism doesn't work anymore.
Has this community, and perhaps the internet as a discussion board, reached "The End of History"? Has the dialectic played itself out until there is nothing on the top but a bucket and a mop and an illustrated book about birds?

Hi friends, I finally got a new camera. My old one was a PowerShot, and I could not have gotten this picture at all with it. Totally loving the Canon T3i. Some purple hazing, but I'm still figuring out the zoom lens. The best way to learn a new camera is taking lots of pictures, so my friend and I went to the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary.

| Lifta village |
[20 May 2013|01:24pm] |
Lifta (Arabic: لفتا; Hebrew: מי נפתוח Mei Niftoach, lit. spring of the corridor) was an Arab village on the outskirts of Jerusalem. The population fled during the Arab-Jewish hostilities of 1947/48. The village, which is mainly intact, is located on a hillside between the western entrance to Jerusalem and the Romema neighbourhood. In 2012, plans to rebuild the village as an upscale neighborhood were rejected by the Jerusalem District Court.
The site has been populated since ancient times; Nephtoah (Hebrew: נפתח) is mentioned in the Hebrew Bible as a border between the Israelite tribes of Judah and Benjamin. It was the northernmost demarcation point of the territory of the Tribe of Judah.[4][5] The Romans and Byzantines called it Nephtho, and the Crusaders referred to it as Clepsta.

| I made an app. |
[19 May 2013|11:44pm] |
Hi all,
I haven't posted here in a while, but I thought some of you might get a kick out of this.
I made a CB radio simulator app for iOS, called, simply, "CB". You load it into your iPhone/iPad/iPod touch, choose a channel, hit the push to talk button, and broadcast to the world!
It's an unmoderated, free, anonymous communication channel on the Internet, so of course, there are some bozos out there, but there are a lot of nice folks using it, too. There's a block button for the bozos.
The app is free; there's an upgrade option available, but the main app with all the core functionality is free. Download it and check it out!

It's like DamnPortlanders, but world-wide, in real time, and with audio instead of text.

| Anyone in need of boxes? |
[19 May 2013|07:29pm] |
|
I put my stuff in storage about a year and a half ago, and am now moving in to a permanent location, which means unboxing a lot of stuff. If someone is going to be in need of cardboard boxes in the next couple weeks, I'll be breaking them down into a big stack soon.

| Rauceby Asylum Lincolnshire May 2013 |
[16 May 2013|09:34pm] |
Visited with Oncewassparkle and to say this place is stripped bare is a bit of an understatement, all the floors ripped out and left like that never seen owt like it. Despite that i really enjoyed it and was really pleased when we found the lucifer effect bits, right a bit of history. Rauceby Hospital, originally called Kesteven County Asylum, is a now-defunct mental institution in the parish of Quarrington, Lincolnshire. Building work was commenced in 1897, the facility was completed and opened in 1902. After changing hands and names several times the main hospital building was closed in 1998 and abandoned for several years. From 2004 parts of the site underwent redevelopment to convert it into private housing. On with a few pics....

| Abandoned research institute |
[15 May 2013|08:57pm] |
|
In today's report will focus on the same research institute in the Soviet era, is the leading in the industry. A lot of high-tech development, design a machine of professional scientists. Alas, it's all in the past, and since the beginning of the 2000s, the institute's activities began to decline. This is particularly noticeable was the year 2010. First, most of the rooms were rented, then did the territory became actively communicate and be built. The report will describe the main building of the institute are some plus lab and a bomb shelter.

| Geoguessr |
[11 May 2013|05:44pm] |
This is a website that has been passing around the internet, and I thought it would be fun for you to know of it:
http://geoguessr.com
It gives you a picture of google street view, and you try to guess where it is.
What rules you use are up to you: scrolling is fair, and I think that researching street names is fair as well. Others might disagree! But it is a game, so have fun, and let me know how you do!
Also, let us know if you get anything local.

| "Stalingrad" film backstage |
[12 May 2013|03:49am] |

In the summer of 2012 in the village of Sapernyi is where a movie based on the novel "Stalingrad" was filmed with a budget of $30 million. The shooting ended and the area was empty and opened to visitors for 500 rubles each, without climbing through the fighting positions, and passing directly through the gates. The set is built on the ruins of the Leningrad distillery. Soviet troops fighting for the defense of the city of Stalingrad began July 17, 1942. On February 2, 1943 the German units were stopped at Stalingrad.

[10 May 2013|05:50pm] |
Right. It's actually hot outside. So that means all the cool kids are at home on their computers, right?
Tonight's topic: I've been thinking about friends a lot lately, so it's time to share: Who are your good friends? What makes a good friend? What major organ would you give up for your buddy?
Portland related because long distance relationships suck.
