I've been here for almost two months, and have gained so much weight I cant wear my jeans without sucking in my tummy )~: It's tragic!!!

Newcastle is pretty much a uni town, so it's like living in an enlarged NTU, minus the benefits of JP and The Sun (I know know the true value of 24hr convenience stores and Popular!!!) This is how we spend our days:
1) Wake up
2) Eat breakfast
3) Make lunch together
4) Eat lunch
5) Eat after lunch snacks while chit chatting
6) Eat before dinner snacks while chit chatting
7) Eat dinner
8) Eat after dinner snacks while chit chatting
9) Go back to respective rooms and watch anime/dramas online while snacking

!!!! Gone will be such days of extravagant eating!! My gut can't take it anymore ): Plus obviously I haven't been sticking to my SCD diet so my gut gets inflammed very easily + more frequent heartburns ): So from today onwards I have to keep a log of what I put in my mouth! Am tired of lugging an aching gut around ><

On a completely unrelated note, look at this clock!! Instead of reading the face, you look at the outer rim to tell time. Super cute!

Rim Clock by Jansen Lye
via Notcot

Off to get my zucchini+apple cobbler from the oven!! Even though I still have 4 untouched lecture readings, even though I didn't buy the textbook (which I've heard is important), even though I haven't been to a single lecture (except to sit for the quizzes before leaving after turning them in), AND even though I didn't S/U it because I'm a complacent pig-head, I still wish it was a morning paper so it be over sooner!! But its in the evening!! Sighhh ): ): ):

Anyway more to come! Really I promise! I haven't blogged for one entire semester so there is A LOAD of stuff to blog about!
The weather's been nothing but wet these couple of days and I swear bugs are just freezing in midflight and dropping dead everywhere. My block's corridors are littered with bodies, but that's not the worst part. The worst, is when you wake up in the morning and really need to wee, but every single cubicle is occupied by some bug or other. Case in point:

Scene: Hall 10, Block 50, Level 5, Girls' toilet
Time: Early morning

Cubicle #1 occupant: a 2.5 inch long dragonfly at the base of the toilet bowl
Cubicle #2 occupant: a similar dragonfly (but much less fortunate) in the toilet bowl
Cubicle #3&4 occupants: misc. collection of bug remains in and around the toilet bowls

What does one have to do to get a clean toilet around here? ):

The weather is also really cold! I feel like I'm in some hilltop resort on holiday now. Need to enjoy this feeling of freedom (!) before all the hall work kicks in. It would be a lie to say that I don't regret joining so many activities. Hall life is getting rather weary and the need to participate in so much just to secure a room is beginning to seem like less than a fair trade. Too late, old boy, too late! The two saddest words in English history.

I seem to be posting nothing but youtube vides lately! But youtube is kind of a good resource the way wikipedia is. Anyways here's an air safey demo video by Virgin America! It's truly one of the best of its kind that I've seen! A good demonstration of how far the limits of information communication can be pushed (:

<lj-embed id="4" />

Another animated approach, this time from Virgin Atlantic:

<lj-embed id="5" />

Also animated, but more in keeping with "professional" expectations. A good likeable take on what would otherwise seem dreary though:

<lj-embed id="6" />

Airline standards that I'm sure many a testosterone charged male person or two would love to have today:

Southwest Airlines commercial circa 1972
<lj-embed id="7" />

A less sex-appeal based and more performance-based approach by United Airlines (1982):

<lj-embed id="8" />

A more recent commercial. Rather humourous take, again, by Virgin Airlines:

<lj-embed id="9" />

Airline commercial spoof. Really funny! (P.S. mushy peas + fish and chips are really good! You can get them at Fisherman's Wharf opposite Central)

<lj-embed id="10" />

If you've watched all those videos, you must be out-airlined by now, so here's a non-airline related commercial which is pretty amusing (and banned I think):

<lj-embed id="11" />

Watched Enchanted and Hero today! Movie marathon with my darling! Hoho :D

Hero was pretty exciting at some parts, but makes references to the TV special, so if you'd missed it you might not follow some parts.. But it did feel like watching a tv program on big screen, so you might be better off with a vcd/dvd.

Enchanted, on the other hand, is a totally different story!! It was FANTASTIC! Yes!! So if you haven't watched it, or don't plan to, GO NOW! The story is predictable but this is a movie where the plot doesn't matter so much as execution does. And the ending credits art is just beautiful!

I felt the animation and drawing style was different from previous Disney styles and learnt from Wikipedia (as we all do) that the animation was outsourced to another company because most of their 2D artists were laid off after the CG boom. What! Why?? ): They should hire better writers, not lay off their treasures and what makes them Disney. But the animation was still pretty good, if you ignore the grotesque anatomical errors (Disney princesses had exaggerated figure proportions, but wait till you see Giselle's). The music and dance scenes were fantastic! Just like old school! The most fun part about the whole thing was trying to look for references. Reading the official reference list makes me want to watch it a second time!

<lj-embed id="3" />
Behind the scenes.
Warning: spoilers! You might want to watch this after you've seen the movie (:

All this is making my psyched for Rapunzel! But that's only coming out in 2010. Sigh! What's revealed looks very promising though, what with Fragonard being their inspiration and all. I love Fragonard's work, and if they do succeed, the graphics for Rapunzel will definitely be an unprecedented breakthrough! I do hope that after the retooling they scraped the pop culture references (ala Shrek and Chicken Little). They're funny, but somehow diminishes the magic of the animated world, especially seeing that they'll most probably be marketing this one as another Princess film, and why would people want to be reminded of the real world when watching a Princess film? X:

Left: Fragonard's The Swing | Right: Rapunzel art. Source.

Provide English vocabulary to everyone for free.
2. Help end world hunger by providing rice to hungry people for free.

This is made possible by the sponsors who advertise on this site.

Whether you are CEO of a large corporation or a street child in a poor country, improving your vocabulary can improve your life. Somewhere in the world, a person is eating rice that you helped provide.
I'm definately going to get chronic eyebags out of this semester ):

Workload feels heavier, not only because of quantity, but also the stress of producing quality. Last year was foundation, and it felt more like a do-what-you-like-as-long-as-you-hand-it-in, as in, I could churn work out in a short timespan and get away with it. This year though it's year one of major! And what everyone says about viscomm ("Most slack one") is FALSE. Because we are viscomm majors, every single thing that we hand in has to be perfect, not just in concept and execution, but also in presentation. The History of Graphic Design zeigeist exhibition project was really something new, because I'd NEVER written and done up a proposal that didn't ask for ugly cover pages, 12pt Times New Roman + double spacing, etc. In fact it was almost the polar opposite.. There still were a few word documents stapled and handed in, but majority of the work was just insane, especially the invitations! People just went all out. Plus because it's a combined module with the year 3s, who are definately more seasoned, competition was intense. I don't think I've ever been so stressed out about peer quality before ): Luckily, the other thing people say about viscomm ("won't learn anything new one") is also false, because I really learn something new with every assignment, be it technical or within myself and design process, so it's worth it I guess. Better to make mistakes now than when you're out there.

I'm really upset with my haiku book ): I can't stand submitting work that I don't like. It is a book, but it has no soul ): Gargghh

---

Have you ever wondered how the little guys living in your mouth view the outside world? You can now see the world from their point of view with The Smiley Cam! It's basically a mini pinhole camera -- mini enough just so it fits in your mouth. The creator, Justin Quinnell, has also made a "A Day in the Life of My Mouth" here. The resulting surrealistic images really look like they were taken from another dimension! Frankly speaking I think its really creepy-looking and bordering grostesque.. Really fascinating though!

-via Photojojo

It's almost my one week aniversary to being twenty! Haha yes late birthday entry but still. I'm finally twenty! Not that I feel any different, but it's still kinda sad to no longer be a teen. Somehow it feels like I can't do crazy things and blame it on my hormones anymore! Boo. Twenty is the year of not year, not there -- am not really looking forward to turning 21 though ): Must enjoy 20 while it lasts!!

Twenty things I want to achieve in my 20th year!

1. Hug my parents. This might be exceedingly simple for some to do, but not for me. My parents are the traditional chinese type who do not really show affection through physical contact, but more through actions and advice. I can't even remember the last time I've hugged them! ): This shouldn't be happening and my parents are getting old; I want to let them know in more ways that I love them.

2. Be less moody. Haha friends who have known me for >5 years (my poor stnicks gang) have often been abused by my sudden and inexplicable moodiness. I do believe that I have come a long way from being some mood swing crazed person, but sometimes I still slip into moods ): I need to be happier and not read so much into certain things.

3. Sell something by me. I really really want to DO something, and not just think about it.

4. Enter a competition/ award thing.

5. Be less grouchy to my boyfriend. Haha! Sorry darling! d:

6. Get rid of fatty legs! Hohoho.

7. Write letters to my old old pals from ATS who I have neglected ):

8. Blog more. I really want to do that! All the time I'm storing things in my head to blog about, because I want to have a record to fall back on, or sometimes about design related stuff that can be good future reference, but I keep putting it off till everything snowballs and there's wayyy to much to say ):

9. Apply for GIP. I really really want to study overseas. It's not going to be easy living alone etc, but I want the experience! I guess it doesnt really matter if I get it or not, but I need to know that I've tried.

10. Take more photographs. My poor cameras are wayy too under utilised. I also want to learn more about photography.

11. Create a portfolio site of sorts.

12. Clean up my computer and organise pictures and bookmarks. I have 1000000000 bookmarks all over the place and 2000000000 various images; I need to devise a system!

13. Learn to cook. Hall canteen food is too oily and salty for daily consumption ):

14. Bake more goodies! Yum yum yum.

15. Practise and hopefully achieve powerful drawing and shading skillz (on the computer)

16. Read more books. I'm reading less and less and that's not good at all.

17. Remember birthdays of people near and dear to me. I'm HORRIBLE at remembering birthdays, which makes me sad cause these people ARE important to me!

18. Make more effort to keep in contact with friends who I love, but are drifting apart.

19 & 20 were going to be STOP PROCRASTINATING and DRINK MORE WATER but I tell myself that everyday anyway and it doesn't work! Haha I try my best.

We've taken to taking pictures at the photobooth after CS816! Haha actually I drag him there. Okay not really, he's the one who brings me because I get lost. But I'm the one who initiates photobooth trips! The booth is digital though so we only can choose one image to print. It also doesn't allow us to print black and white though it advertises the function ): But still! Happy happy :D :D :D

I fail at smiling properly in these!
Yesterday my laptop did the Somersault of Death and flipped out of my arms, ending the stunt with a (too) loud resounding BANG! on the floor. When I tried to boot it up it kept flashing the CAPSLOCK! NUMLOCK! SCROLLLOCK! (what does that do anyway?) at me and the screen remained resolutely blank, because obviously the repeated flashing of ALL three locks at once meant that it was LOCKED DOWN LOCK LOCK LOCK!!!!!!!!!!1111111111111oneone

You can tell that I'm getting hysterical and incoherent, because allllllll my projects that I've done so far and their processes, drafts, etc, which will be needed to be designed and bound into a book at the end of the semester (which is like, five weeks away! Six, actually, but five till the deadline I think) are in that laptop and even though chances of me losing my information are slight, I've been told that I might only be able to retain about 50% of the info. PLEASE LET THAT 50% BE MY D: DRIVE PLSPLSPLSS ): ): ): WHY DIDN'T I BACK UP ): ): ):

I'm now using papa's laptop which is the same model and I'm so amazed at how new and snappy it is! Now, who wouldn't want to walk around with a trail of happy clouds like that??

*

Goosai's birthday <3

Handmade dark chocolate frosting! Looks disgusting but is really yummy (X

Frosted cupcake! Via the good ol' fashioned way of dumping frosting in plastic bag, cutting a hole in the corner, and squeezing. Super messy and unprofessional, but good enough for a first I guess :D

The 6 selected few for the gift! (The batch made about 20, I can't remember, the rest went to family.)

While I was setting this up (minus the lit candles - I can't use a lighter X:) he was right outside my door and wondering why I would not let him in. (I tricked him out of the room prior to 12am)

Super cute candle holders my sis and Jack bought for him! So sweet! :D

The happy couple (X

*

My headphones! My approaching-teenhood brother has acquired the horrid musical taste of your typical prepubescent kid and kidnapped my speakers (Afterall, what's good music without volume? Preteens! Bah!) and to escape the clutches of the horrible wails I need my handydandy headphones! But to show that despite my own waning teenhood, I have not lost all my cool yet, I made flowers and attached them to my headphones and now I look like I've got flowers sprouting out of my ears! Now who ever said good music can't make flowers grow better?? XD

Camwhoring with more photos than you can count! Okay actually you probably could, unless you're like, 2months old - and your mum/dad/whoever is holding you while reading this - or, a dog. The third one was thrown in to show off my new glasses (X

BAIBAI.

Thanks to Nickelodeon's (I had to Google that to learn how to spell it) new Spongebob episodes, I have been watching more spongebob than what is considered healthy over the past two days. (About 8 hours worth) Gah! Squidward is still very funny though.

Squidward: (to Spongebob) One Kraby Patty.
Spongebob: (fixes the burger) There you go! (But remains rooted to the spot)
Squidward: (Exasperated) Now bring it here, Spongebob.
Spongebob: (Can't walk without falling due to untied laces and he's forgotten how to tie them) Hey! I've got an idea. Why don't you come here and get it?
Squidward: Ohh! You're right! That's a brilliant idea! And while I'm at it, I could also go stand at the grill, flip Krabby Patties, turn into a yellow sponge, go live in a pineapple, and call myself SPONGEBOB!!! BRING THE PATTY HERE!!!!!!

:D :D

This blog is dying! I sort of found my old journal from JC, and read through it a little, and I really miss the times when I would actually write the details of the day. I don't do it anymore, either on pen or paper, and am afraid my life will just pass me by without any proof to remind me, later, that I had lived somehow, no matter how wayward or vagrant-esque!

Anyways I do have loads to talk about, and photos actually already uploaded, just too lazy to post, and here are the highlights since my absence!

- Watched Phantom of the Opera at the Esplanade
- Bought a Wacom Intuous 3 6x8" OHMYGOD XD
- Went for Mayday's Jump! concert (Bought a sparkly lightstick thing! :D)
- Went to Malacca for 3D2N

Of course, there are little things (read: less expensive) too, like:

- Finished my first year of university!
- Discovered that Ai Wo, the health food restaurant that fang used to work at at Raffles City is closed
- Met up with Natalie and Wan Lin at AMKHub! XD
- Went back to SNGS with Natalie, Ivy and Vienna! (She's graduated already!)
- Got myself addicted to WoW X:
- Borrowed more juvenile literate from the library that I can read
- Baked and baked and baked (:
- FOC carwash and milo poisoning X: (Which got me running to Jubilee's loo on the way home to puke X:)

Picture will be uploaded in next post!

Why is it that when people write about art they feel the need to structure their sentences in such abstract and complicated ways like "More than that, the restlessness and shorthanded notation of colours, which is an intense series of signs and letters scribbled in extreme excitement comparable to a letter or entry in a diary and forming both a unity during the more distant process of reading as well as a readable message, is in danger of drowning on the canvass in a chaos of pictorial signs and endless spaces." or, "Within this process from the first notation on an empty canvass to the finished image structure, Christian Möller lives through all the ups and downs of inner and external tensions, perceptions, observations and events he encounters in his daily life. He pictorially develops them to the point where he binds himself to one state after many solid and transparent coatings in compact, condensed colours and/or transparent, dissolved colours and leaves them where he feels he has found his inner balance, as he himself points out" ??

Digesting all this is giving me such a huge headache!!

I hate 4D!! ):

I don't update often, but when something epic (and by epc, I really mean epically tragic) happens, I just HAVE to talk about it. Here goes:

I flushed my handphone down the toilet bowl.

This happened on the wednesday that's just past, sometime during the afternoon ): It's what sonnie would call "such a loser thing to do".

I just can't believe that while my hall toilet is incapable of properly disposing of human waste/ excess toilet paper, it has cleanly and perfectly swallowed my handphone whole in a matter of what, 3, 4 seconds?

It's ridiculous!!

(So meanwhile, before I get my replacement sim card, I will be uncontactable. If you get any calls/ msgs from me, it's not me, it's the sewer gods.)

Am at the National Library now waiting for the hall awards certs and invites to be printed and for goosai's lessons to end! Anyway I've just discovered that there are laptop terminals both at the Central Lending Library and the reference libraries upstairs. The only downside is that bags larger than a4-a3 size are not allowed (in the reference libraries), so I had to practically take everything out of my bag, keep the empty bag in the "Free Locker Service" (yippee) and carry the armload of stuff in, and still get stopped by the security who made me put everything down and pointed to my very obviously marker-set-looking marker set to inquire what it was and THEN making me put it back in the trusty Free Locker Service. He let me bring my pencil case in, so I suppose he felt that the delightful array of colours of the markers would tempt me to deface the books, and of course I wouldn't even think of vandalising with the boring black and blue pens in my pencil case! After all that trouble, the same guard let another girl carry her backpack in with just a cursory glance at the contents. Growl!

This is more like an update for the sake of not stagnating my blog again. When yux questioned why I didn't blog anymore I told her it was because I didn't have anything to blog about, to which she answered "But you study very interesting things what!". I shall try to live up to the perception that art people live very exciting (and possibly even vagrant) lifestyles and update more regularly.

Truth is, I've become lazy. In the spirit of "busyness", I have allowed myself to sleep as early as midnight even when 3 major deadlines are looming on top of adhoc events. This indulgence has affected my stamina for functioning normally without sleep even without sleep, something I used to excel at! Cannot already, exams and assessment (how many 's's are there?) deadlines are coming so I need to get back my stamina!

Went to laogong's house today under the threat of never being able to enter again if I missed the opportunity (wo bu yao! ><) and it was quite strange cause we didn't know what to do! Haha but thanks for the invite and the food and trying to be a gracious host and your house (and room!) is really quite pretty now! :D Then dar and I went to Botak Jones (!) after lots and lots and lots and lots of walking around. Somehow we've spent the majority of our time walking and getting lost the past week. (Maybe there'll be a recap!) The food is nothing to shout about, and we thought it was rather perculiar that the whole place was swarming with BJ staff, even though almost half of them were idle at anyone time. Felt sorry for the Bak Chor Mee stall (the only other stall open) though, everyone there seemed to be ordering from BJ.

Came back and played princess maker 2! (He played while I watched+did work) It's funny how he's picked up pm2 from me while I've picked up WoW from him >< Need to get away from games! Hadn't intended to play WoW at all but when he was showing the character creation page to me the gnome was SO DARNED ADORABLE and now I'm a spiky pink haired + bushy bearded rouge gnome called Gaarden (Gaarden Gnome!) and he's a paladin dawrf with brown braids called Flowerr (Flowerr in the Gaarden!). Haha matchy matchy names! But most of the time I'm just following him around to complete quests and live for the moments when I acquire new armour or weapons or herbs or ingredients to cook. Hoho househusband!

Anyway it's 1.20am and I'm pass the sleepy stage so it's time to conquer the earth! Or if that fails, my 2D assignment will do. (I don't know if anyone remembers but the phrase "It's time to conquer the earth!" is actually said by Rita, the original badass mastermind in the original Power Rangers) 2D is a horribly tedious subject with assignments like "Create Patterns with Classical, Art Deco and Modernism Influences" and "Draw the Same Scene 24 Times, One for Each Hour, And Reflect the Colour and Mood Changes" (current assignments). Oh happy dagger! I shall leave you with a happy picture of part of my class on our school's rooftop/ unnescessary maintenance/ cool gimmick.
