| Hello, and I'm a little confused |
[Wednesday the 9th, 11.39AM] |
Ok. So, I just wanted to introduce myself here. I've only been collecting comics for about a year now, so I know I'm fairly new to the genre, and there is still a lot of I haven't read, but I do love to discuss them, and I guess, find some help when I get lost.
Like now....I'm reading the Blackest Night storyline, and I really just don't understand why Kyle Rayner did what he did? I don't want to throw any actually spoilers in here so I won't go into much detail. I'll just say that all I really know about the Lanterns comes from what I'm learning from this story line.

...Right HERE (If you were wondering, that;s my other journal. Sometimes I can't be arsed to switch journals at times) I might do icons sometime, but that's if I figure out how to get my images to be smooth and crisp.

| The First Of Many Millar Bashing Posts |
[Sunday the 6th, 02.18PM] |
So I don't know how many of you spend time on Comic Book Resources, from the 3 or 4 people who actually post and comment here, I should maybe just email you and ask you, but what they, I'm at work and feeling stupid, so here's another post that no one will read, or care enough about to comment on, and that's probably my fault, I was raised Roman Catholic, so blame myself for everything and feel bad all the time. Anyways. There was a post on Millar/Niven's newest project for ICON, "Nemesis". Here's the promo pic:

It's come out that Millar is describing the story as "What if the Joker was Batman?", this coming hot on the heels of his popular, "What if a kid in the real world was a superhero?" and following his other popular stories such as "What if Eminem had a bisexual father?" and "What if Army guyz had real powerz for real you guys?".
Nevermind that Mark Waid, who I'm coming to realize is actually probably a better writer pound for pound, punch for punch than Millar, just put out his "What if Superman was evil?" comic, "Irredeemable" this past year and it's bloody brilliant.
But, the point I'm trying to make in this entry at least, is that, Really? Is this all were doing these days? Stories that can be summed up in the most simple of basic stupid obvious questions? Is this all we've ever been doing? Maybe I'm being short sighted, maybe it's always been like this, I guess you could sum up "The Dark Knight Returns", "What if Batman retired and then didn't?" but that doesn't seem to cover it at all. "League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen"- What if all the literary characters were alive for real and made a super team that operated out of London and had to-, see, not so easy.
So I propose we search for the next great Millar here in zomgcomics! Here you can post all your brilliant ideas for new edgy dangerous Millar esque stories! I'll start.
-What if The Kingpin was Daredevil? -What if Professor X was Magneto? -What if Cyclops was Wolverine? -What if Elijah Snow was a member of the four? -What if Reed Richards was Dr. Doom? -What if Captain America was the Red Skull? (OOPS. Millar just nailed that one in Ultimate Avengers)

| most wii for my buck |
[Thursday the 3rd, 01.41PM] |
|
hello! i've been wanting a Wii for a while, but i'm kinda cheap. So I've been noticing some of the bundles that various retailers are doing and think this is the time to buy. The latest one is Walmart - you get a $50 gift card when you by a Wii. So, do you think this is the best deal? Or are there bundles out there that cost more, but you get more accessories/games?
There aren't that many games I want (Wii play, resort sports, mario kart, rock band/guitar hero, and the new super mario bros.) and I haven't found any bundles with these games. Are these games easy to find on sale or lightly used at a good price?
Anyone have any insider info on the retail industry and think that after Christmas i might find an even better deal??
Thanks for your help/opinions!
And if this isn't ok for the community, please delete and accept my apologies!

| Crazy Mario Video - "Don't Stop Me Now!" |
[Monday the 30th, 08.05PM] |
Ok, a couple of things before we begin. First of all someone needs to sort out the image in the background for this comm. It appears to have dissapeared.
Secondly, I'm currently a little overly addicted to Metroid Prime Trilogy. I've always loved the Metroid games and the new control system is fantastic. There appear to be three difficulty levels and I'm currently working my way through the hardest version of Metroid Prime before moving on to the two sequels. If you liked the new control system on Resident Evil 4, you will not be dissapointed!
Thirdly, House Of The Dead Overkill is both hilarious and really great fun. If you've seen Rodriguez's "Planet Terror" movie you'll have some idea what to expect.
Finally, here is a random vid I found recently on Topless Robot. Someone has programmed four different Mario levels intentionally to get sound effects to go with Queen's "Don't Stop Me Now". It's not the most tuneful thing I've ever heard, but you really have to give them credit for this amazingly complicated waste of time. Weirdest thing I've seen this month. Check it out:

| Stephen reorganizes all of his comics, Part the Second |
[Sunday the 29th, 10.18AM] |
I managed to get the J-V section organized last night and it brought some serious ennui.
It seemed like for every series I had a long run on that I enjoyed I had two or three random batches of comics that made me seriously question why I even waste the money. There were also...odd gaps where books seem to be missing.
1. This section had a lot of series that I wanted to like, but really disappointed me after a few issues: Madame Mirage, Jonah Hex (new series), Metal Men (new series), Mister X: Condemned, Painkiller Jane, Secret Six (ongoing), Speak of the Devil, Tank Girl: The Gifting, Thulsa Doom, Umbrella Academy.
2. This section also contains some of my favorite long runs of certain titles: Man-Thing, Judge Dredd, Solomon Kane, Knights of the Dinner Table, Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk, The Shadow, Kolchak the Night Stalker, Strontium Dog, What If..., and West Coast Avengers.
3. For as poorly rendered and incoherent as Moonstone's Buckaroo Bonzai titles have been, their Kolchak the Night Stalker series have been of uniformly above average quality. The art looks like Darren McGavin, the dialog sounds like the series, and the plots make fucking sense. See? That wasn't so hard Moonstone.
4. I have a near complete run of the new series of She-Hulk (1-25) and of the new Ms. Marvel series (10-25; Someone ganked my issues 1-9). I dropped both books due to a massive drop in quality of writing and clear direction of narrative. Ms. Marvel fell victim to Marvel needing her to crossover in Civil War, Secret Invasion and everything else. She was just far too connected to Captain America and the Avengers to keep any sort of solo book success when Marvel is in a "How-many-tie-ins-can-we-force-into-this-major-event" mode.
She-Hulk on the other hand switched hands from Dan Slott to Peter "I'm out of ideas" David and immediately went into the crapper. The art sucked, the characterization sucked and the book went away.
The most interesting thing about these mutual declines for me is how they mirror the original declines of these Marvel heroines 70s' series. If one reads the first volumes of both the Essential Savage She-Hulk and Ms. Marvel, you won't need to read further, b/c you'll have read the best either series has to offer. How can there be an endless amount of stories to tell about Thor or Iron Man, yet no one has any clue of what to do with She-Hulk? I assume it has to do with creme rising and good writers wanting to work on characters that have the most cachet AKA old male heroes.
I'll handle the X-books (and Y and Z) tonight.

| Stephen reorganizes all of his comics, Part the First |
[Saturday the 28th, 10.07AM] |
It was time for a change here in Xanadu and about 100 un-filed comics combined with absolutely no more long box space led to a trip to the mall and a decision to rethink my filing processes.
See, I have more or less always organized my comics by publisher and then by letter, rather than a straight up alphanumeric system. This made the most sense when I had like two or three hundred books and 95% of them were from Marvel. Well now that I'm nearing a thousand books and have a few more DC books than I used to, almost a long box of Dark Horse, and a ton of books from the near endless array of newer independent presses that have sprung up over the years, a new system is needed.
empressith pushed hard for the Overstreet alphanumeric thing and I eventually relented. The problem I have always had with that system is I tend to forget about the two issues I have of this book or that book; the large runs stick in my mind more easily. My solution was, is, the dreaded organizational spreadsheet (duh DUH). I won't bore you terribly, but I will mention that it is taking for-motherfucking-ever.
I'm through letter A-I already and it took hours. Perhaps you know about reading Trees? I'm hoping to be able to do this with my comic collection.
Thoughts, insights, and pattens so far:
1. I keep buying Buckaroo Bonzai comics from Moonstone despite none of them having good art and none of them making any god-damned sense. Part or whole of 6 mini-series (most no longer than 3 issues), that's how much I love this character. I hope one day to be happy with a BB licensed comic.
2. I own 17 different Avengers issues, almost none of them are consecutive and they span from the early 70's through the mid 90's. I feel like there's a rule involving the JLA/Avengers: If you're a Marvel fan, and collect at all, you've got a few Avengers issues hanging around and I assume the same is true for DC fans. You can't avoid them; they've had so many members, been around for so long, so many crossovers that there is one issue somewhere that you will be interested in. That's my rule.
3. I own 45 of the 60-ish issues of B.P.R.D. This includes a near 3 year uninterrupted run from January 2007 until present, maybe longer after I really check release months. I've never collected comics like that and I attribute it almost totally to the quality and structure of B.P.R.D. (great writing, great art, 5 issue purposeful arcs) and having Triad comics, thus not having to worry about remembering when the books were out. Not having a shop right now may put an end to that run.
4. Interesting runs in the A-I portion of the collection: #1-25 of The Invisibles, #54-70 (missing 2 issues) of Doom Patrol the Morrison and then Pollack run, Guardians of the Galaxy (current run) #1-19.
5. I'll bounce off of that last one to talk briefly about Guardians of the Galaxy. I love this series. For me, this is the series that the ongoing Secret Six series alms to be. Also, I collected the Starlord 4 issue mini-series that launched into this and thoroughly enjoyed that as well, which means this is actually a 23 issue run. I won't say month run just because I think they pumped out some 2-issue months during War of Kings and the other million events.
My hope is to knock out J-P tonight, which wil include all of my Judge Dredd, which excites me.

Ronan Keating - She Believes (In Me) |
] |
This is my second Thanksgiving holiday that I've been able to celebrate and I have a lot to be thankful for. This time last year I posted very little about Thanksgiving besides a few days before when I got to go out with Vince to eat Cici's before watching Quantum of Solace at the cinema- hopefully he'll stop on by today after he's had his thanksgiving dinner for a little bit more eating! I love this holiday... you can eat and eat and nobody complains. (That being said- nobody complains anyway when I eat and eat to my hearts content, very rarely does that happen ^_^ )
Also, this is going to be my first thanksgiving being engaged and that's already an exciting prospect. I'm very lucky to have found Katherine and I know we'll always look out for each other :) I'm also terribly excited to start blogging about our trials and tribulations as well as all the marvellous and wonderful adventures we'll have together. (I wish I could have tried to capture all the wondrous times we've had to date- like our encounter with Topol!!) I have the most remarkable woman in my life and I just can't wait! *excited face*
This year I can't help but have the biggest smile on my face when I walk downstairs and see Misty chasing all the other dogs on "The Dog Show"... I think it was my Dad that thought the dog how to chase other animals whenever adverts would come on English tv during Eastenders, Coronation Street, Saturday Night Takeaway and that whole lot! He'd say with excitement "What's on tv?!" and eventually she caught on to what the actual tv is. Now whenever anyone mentions the word "TV" she'll go insane and look for the nearest television set even if it's on or off.
Once this day is over I can finally look forward to thinking about Christmas- I get really excited whenever I see adverts for sales or holiday special episodes of television shows that I know it's edging closer. One of more snazzy things about the Christmas holidays is there are plenty of opportunities for Seasonal jobs! Michael (Katherine's brother) coined the term for our proposal "Phase 1" and ever since Katherine told me it's stuck with us... I'm applying around for Seasonal jobs and working extra hours at my current job so that we can earn more money to reach our phases and goals.
Now off to help thanksgiving processes and to listen to Ronan's Christmas album. :)

[Thursday the 26th, 12.52AM] |
No spoilers...
I had a HUGE stack today but I read the ones I am caught up on already.
GOTHAM CITY SIRENS #6
Okay, I have to admit I really liked this story. I never knew the Joker had a sidekick pre-Crisis. Pretty cool stuff. The art is still a little too... busty... but I like the story.
DETECTIVE COMICS #859
Still not convinced I'm crazy about Katy Kane, but I do like Renee and the flashbacks were cool.
ARKHAM REBORN #2
Nothing can ever go right for anyone having to do with that place.
GIANT SIZE THOR FINALE #1
The end of the JMS story. Now it's fucking on. Loved it, loved it, loved it... just bummed JMS is gone. I hope the rest of the story is going to be as awesome. Can't wait for DOOMWAR!
NEW AVENGERS #59
Oooooo Oooooo Oooooo
Don't fuck with Luke Cage...
The last page I gasped. Literally. I freaked out my cat.
Thoughts?
